I am convinced that most true-believing flat earthers are attracted to very simplistic practical models. They do not like the complexity of real-world math. They do not like abstract constructs. What they want to believe in is what they can see out their window or while standing in their yard. They want extreme simplicity in their science. They are not going to do something like flight planning because it involves math at levels above simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Some don't want to go beyond addition.

There is a subject that scare flat-earthers even more and that is the geographic coordinate system, on a flat earth it had been easier to use squares of the same size to make a map, but for some reason flerfs still use a map with the geographic coordinate system with a center on the north pole, the result of that is that they have a coordinate system without any right angles, and that is why it is impossible for flat earthers to create a own map from scratch.

He forgot Velocity is squared in the lift formula for the first question. I corrected him on that with a bit of remedial instruction. On the next question he failed it the same way. Not applying velocity squared. When I chided him for not paying attention he disappeared. It further reinforced my opinion he suffers from dyscalculia.

@Q Branch I had simplified the lift equation for the purpose of the questions to Lift = Angle of Attack x Velocity squared First question. The aircraft is flying at 200 Knots and generating 1000 kg of lift. While maintaining a constant angle of attack the speed is reduced to 100 Knots. How much lift is generated. Correct answer is 250 kg, he said 500. The next question was, to maintain level flight if speed is halved how much should the angle of attack increase. He said twice, correct answer is four times. I then asked him if he wants to learn or keep getting the basic stuff wrong. He disappeared. We were doing it on unlisted videos but Wally was lurking and sending me his (correct) answers by text while Sleepy was getting them wrong. I actually pitied him as it showed me he really has a problem with Math.

How can a plane fly level with its nose down? Easy. Result is nose down flight and wings that are practically level instead of angled upwards. A flerf asked that question apparently as a stumper. A quick google turned up WWII planes that nose down at top speed to the surprise of some pilots, and the B-52 which can look very nose down when flying in formation with fighters, That got me interested and I had to check out why.

Been having some fun with this one... Thanks, Wolfie! Although I'm not a pilot, I flew the T-1A Jayhawk simulator several times back in my Boeing days (1996-2002), so I knew all about the Haversine formula. Anyway, I'm getting a lot of insults, a lot of excuses, and a lot of deflection, as expected. One guy thought that he could simply replace latitude and longitude with a simple X-Y co-ordinate system. Well, that fell apart from the moment of conception, and once he realized that it was a hopeless solution, he just kind of disappeared into the ether, never to be heard from again. There was another with whom I worked with diligently for several hours over a few days, but he eventually had no choice but to admit.... befuddlement.

They could create a reality show like the Squid games where flat earthers are put into a pilot seat and carefully tutored to create a flight plan based off of a flat earth, then they get to test their flight plan by piloting a plane to follow it and they could live stream it as they plunge into the ocean or crash. Maybe we could call the show Flat Earth Flight club.

I notice that the way-points for long flights have short 3-5 letter 'name/codes'. Is there any particular taxonomy for these? Like those that start with 'T' are to/from some particular place? Or are they just random jumbled 'names' assigned. Anyway, always love your videos, I always learn new things, hope you can keep doing them amongst your busy life (between your family, flying, your hobbies with drones and astronomy, you must be a busy fellow.)

Thanks Mike. Waypoints are mostly random 5 letter groups but the requirement is they are pronounceable as a word. So Zabit could be a waypoint but zzztt never will be. There are some duplicates and occasionally you can see combinations proving the ATC has a sense of humour. For example, one of the arrivals into Brisbane uses the waypoints in this order, LEAKY BOATS SINNK On a departure they have MEAND DADAN DENIS LILEE. (when pronounced it sounds like Me and Dad and Dennis Lillee) Dennis Lillee was a famous Australian cricket player. Three letter codes are usually associated with ground based navigation beacons. Like the Wollongong NDB would be WOL. The one at Katoomba was KAT but has been replaced with KADOM when he aid was decommissioned.

The topic that scares flat Earthers ... Yes, Wolfie, not to downplay the great stuff you do with flight planning, but I must add that I think they're scared of a whole lot of things, basically running afraid much of the time. 😆 I've been thinking, for example, about all the fuss they're making with sextants at the moment. Mitchell with his grand statements that "sextants prove the Flat Earth!" ... and yet, not one of them has done what Dr. Bob did, and simply stepped out onto their driveway, did a sighting with their sextant, and PROVED that they could find their location. Want to find out how fast a Flat Earther can run backwards? Just try handing them a sextant. You're absolutely right. They will never go anywhere NEAR flight planning. Not in a million years.

So I dropped everything, downloaded a reasonably accurate flight sim, and learned to read an instrument panel, and write a basic plan to follow within a couple days. Granted I was pretty much just hopping around between Hawaii and Guam in that short time, but it wasn't particularly difficult navigating by VOR. I imagine the whole process is much easier now.

If you use the radius of the Earth to make a flight plan, then shouldn't you be using the altitude of the plane for the distance (6371km + ~8km)? For example if you fly 1/4 way around the Earth, the distance on land would be 10,007km, but at an altitude of 8km the distance would be 10,020km. Or is the altitude calculated part of the flight plan? But I suppose it's still within the margin of error anyway, since a plane would cover about 13km in 1 minute or so..

It’s sad how they can’t even dig up ideas that some of them have documented at length. Electromagnetic acceleration salvages some aspects of a flat Earth. It still doesn’t hold up under any kind of geodesy and indeed flight planning, but at least it’s a little harder to dismiss out of hand. It works at relatively small scales where you can see the horizon drop but not yet the convergence of geodesics. Another fun one is a disk accelerating upward at 9.8 m/s^2, more or less tackling terrestrial gravity in a creative way. It’s funny when they get ‘reasonable’ and reject specific conspiracy theories for being obvious bunk, while defending bunk that’s just as silly. The truth is that they don’t really want a model or explanation. They just want to be in on this mystery involving a flat Earth (or perhaps a hollow one or some other variation). Anything concrete would be consistent with the globe or easily refuted, maybe even eroding their roots by infighting. I think they’ve realized that by now. Wolfie does as well, hence this challenge.

@Wolfie60202 жыл бұрын
The airlines have dedicated flight planning departments. In Corporate aviation we could absolutely do the flight plans from scratch ourselves. There is no requirement to use a service provider like Jeppesen or Universal. In practice though we do use them for complex international trips. It simply frees up the pilot's time and it is good to have their backup if something goes wrong with a clearance while we are enroute. When I first started doing long range international flying most of my flight plans were manually calculated. We also did a lot of covert operations so the routes were not given to any external agencies and our flight details were suppressed at the ATC level. Those trips were all manually calculated with spreadsheets like I show in this video.

Although the "flatness or curvature of the horizon" is not the main topic of this video, permit me to post my thoughts on this matter here. Irrespective of the shape of the Earth, the horizon is a circle, at constant distance from the observer. The usual claim of flat earthers is that "we don't see its curvature and therefore Earth is flat". But from where can you observe a circle as a straight line? The answer is (and anybody can verify it easily with a hula hoop) that the eye has to be in the plane within which this circle rests. But this doesn't happen with the horizon/circle in reality, even on a flat earth surface you are at some distance away from this plane and ought to see a part of the circle as a part of the ellipse. Take the line running from the eye to one point of the circle to the horizon and the tangent to the circle forming the horizon: these two straight lines define a plane. All of the circle/horizon is below this plane and we should see it gradually curving away from the tangent line. So, why don't we? Primarily, because this tangent isn't plotted there for the observer to watch it, left and right. Second, as soon as your eyes wander left or right, the original tangent isn't the current tangent any more - your line of sight from the eye to the horizon wanders along a (very flat!) cone. And you are seeing the same image any which way: an apparently straight section of the horizon. Furthermore, consider your central field of of vision: the area where you see everything distinctly (!) is surprisingly small. - I guess you can see how intricate matters are. This is the usual story for almost everything in physics (and astronomy and geodesy etc.), which is something flat earthers don't want to accept. ("But you can _see_ that it is flat.")
@RockinRobbins132 жыл бұрын
You have to be about 3º above the plane of the circle to see horizontal curvature, and even then you need a field of view of about 100º.
@havingfunherecoolbeans2112 жыл бұрын
There's no curvature! Oceans are sea level! Horizon is a Horizontal flat line.
@RockinRobbins132 жыл бұрын
@@havingfunherecoolbeans211 Yes, the oceans are level, but they are not flat. "Level" is a sphere concentric with the center of gravity of the globe, such that each point on that level sphere is at equipotential energy, not seeking to flow to any other location on the level sphere. Local level is a plane tangent to the sphere of the globe. Level is a different plane for each location on Earth. If you put two geodetic theodolites (this has been performed tens of thousands of times by geodetic surveyors) 500 meters apart, you measure that the vertical lines at each location lean 16 arcseconds apart. So we've measured 500 meters of horizontal separation. Now we have to calculate the proportion of Earth that represents, just like the method you agree is valid above. So how many arcseconds is 360 degrees? Take 360 degrees, multiply by 60 arcminutes in a degree and multiply that by 60 arcseconds in an arcminute to find that the entire circle of the circumference of Earth is a 1,296,000 arcsecond circle. Now we measured 16 arcseconds. We'll duplicate exactly what we did above with our new numbers. Ready? 16 arcseconds is to (divided by) 1,296.000 arcseconds (the whole circumference) as (equals) 500 meters (our measured portion of the circumference) is to (divided by) the entire circumference of Earth in meters (x). English words have equivalency to mathematical terms. Since both are languages you can freely translate back and forth from math to English. Now let's duplicate the process above with the real numbers for Earth, using the math that we validated just now. 16/1,296,000 is .000012346, and that is the proportion of Earth that we measured at 500 meters. All we have to do is divide 500 by .000012346 and we have honestly, validly, beyond any legitimate criticism, measured the circumference of the sphere. The answer is 40,500,000 meters, 40,500 km. This measurement and calculation has been done in thousands of locations about the globe. it always ends up within a fraction of a percent of 40,500 km. The reason for the discrepancy is the error envelope of our measurement methods, both the geodetic theodolite and the tape measure to set the two stations' distance. And you can do it yourself, *having fun.* There are geodetic surveyors in just about any reasonable sized city on the globe. You can make the measurements yourself. If you find your measurements support Flerftopia, present all observations and calculations and you'll get a Nobel prize.

@@havingfunherecoolbeans211 _"Haha bull shit you wrote."_ But I can prove it's true, you can measure for yourself and get the same results. At 500 meters apart, perfectly vertical lines, in perfect alignment with the direction things fall at those two locations, the direction "up" from the two locations lean apart by 16 arcseconds. You're perfectly free to measure it yourself. Using the math I showed clearly enough that a ten year old can do it will allow you to use those two reciprocal zenith measurements to calculate the diameter of the globe. The truth demands to be tested so that it can demonstrate that you are correct in trusting it. Nobody needs to insult others or use profanity, as you have, to defend the truth. Your very language and tactics shout that your are wrong, you know you are wrong and don't care if anyone agrees with you.
