Well if you have to work hard in order to maintain a "unique aesthetic" then i'm sorry to tell you, but that's textbook definition pretentiousness, and if you define yourself by your purchase decisions then you already accept the fallacy that there is deeper meaning to be found within the the things we own, which in itself is the mother of pretentious assumptions, but that would explain the mirror stage identification: just like his customers wish to gain uniqueness from the purchase of his products, so does he when he curates his "unique aesthetic" but the thing is that this is only surface level uniqueness and will never be intrinsic, because at the end of the day its just pretentious cloth, so yeah charlie is kinda right when he accuses him of having no credibility whatsoever

The aesthetic of his clothes is generally gothic, dark and avant-garde with different inspirations like the brutalist movement in architecture. As of late, his clothes are more oversized and glamorous whilst still keeping that original gothic DNA, they're made for thin and fit subjects as he preaches health, phisical activity and well-being (as you can see from his home gym). There are a lot of people who buy his clothes, you'll see a lot of rappers, musicians and other celebrities wearing it such as Kanye West, Playboi Carti, the Migos, Rihanna, Lenny Kravitz, Kim Kardashian, etc... Most of the time you'll see them, not with a full Rick Owens outfit, but with specific articles like shoes such as Geobaskets, Ramones, Kiss heels and drop crotch pants with long drawstrings.

I will always respect Charlie's opinions on art, even though I rarely ever agree with them. Rick Owen's is an incredibly talented, genuine guy. He's not trying to impress anyone. He's just living his way. I obviously get that this is all goofs and gaffs and jokes, but I do feel that many times any sort of introspection into art or why people like art is immediately met with accusations of pretention, which I think is unfair. Not everyone is pretending. I know these objects bring Rick joy, and I am given joy by extension.

For when the man you're trying to sell the smashed banana nailed to the wall has a modicum of intelligence. You need to be able to ascribe meaning to that which is superfluous. Yes, I did just paint four different coloured circles and a white diamond on black backround with a grey swirl, but those eye pleasing blotches now represent the dichotomy and imbalance of mans nature and how without discipline and objectivism the spirit is consumed as if a slow burning fuel. The real key to selling it is to be just vague enough that the mark-imean discerning customer, can give it meaning and value themselves. Create something striking, and let THEM give it a value that matches the price tag. :D

It intrigued me so I decided "Why not try it" and let me tell you, IT IS THE BOMB DIGGITY. So heres the recipe, whip it up and give it a taste 😁. Mhhm kay so here are the ingredients: •White Cake Mix •eggs •water •vegetable oil •coconut extract •milk •cream of coconut •sweetened flaked coconut •butter •powdered sugar So now that I’m assuming you got all the ingredients on deck its now time to put those hands to use. You ready? ok lets do it: •Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 13x9 inch baking dish with cooking spray and set that bad boy aside (we’re gonna need him later 😜) In a large bowl stir, together the cake mix, eggs, water, coconut extract and vegetable oil until it’s moist, then beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for two minutes. After that pour that creamy, moist, succulent batter into the prepared baking dish. •Allrighty throw that batter into the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes until the top of the cake is lightly brown, insert a toothpick inside the cake until the center comes out clean. •Remove that fluffy, tasty cake from the oven and place on a wire rack. Whilst the cake is still warm, poke holes over the entire surface of the cake with a toothpick. Whisk 1 cup of cream of coconut and 1/2 cup of milk together in a small bowl and pour evenly over the warm, yummy, scrumptious cake. Allow the cake to cool completely. •Now for the frosting. Beat the soft butter over medium speed with an electric mixer until soft and creamy. Continue to beat over medium speed as you gradually add the powdered sugar. Stop the mixer and scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula as needed to fully incorporate all of the sugar. Once the butter and sugar have come together, gradually beat in the remaining cream of coconut (about 1/3 cup). Add the coconut extract 1 teaspoon at a time and taste in between for a desired flavor (2 teaspoons are enough for me😂) •After the cake is completely cooled off, top with coconut buttercream frosting and sprinkle with coconut. If could also toast the coconut before sprinkling on top; if you want directions for that i’ll help. And if the cake is too filling for you can store that bad boy in the refrigerator for later. Okay, so that was the recipe, if you want more I also have a Lasagna and a French Toast recipe (just ask if you want the sauce) @lilpasta out 🤙

Art is subjective, and any comment on any piece of art is valid perspective. "This piece is melancholic and represents the human struggle using an ironic subject" is just as valid as "haha, that clown is sad" The pretentiousness percieved oftentimes comes from the excessive thesaurus inspired descriptions of art from people clearly trying to speak with some degree of definitive authority. I always have had huge respect for Charlie because of his humble approach when it comes to everything he does. His very simple edited and laid back videos, only wearing white shirts and a pair of shorts for example. But I also wish he would try to be more understanding of the more "extravagant" approach when it comes to fashion, art etc. Afterall taste is subjective and I believe it is one of the best things about humans that every one of us finds different ways to express themselves. Often times he might be correct when he calls something pretentious but lumping all of these people together is just a very narrow minded view. I would not wear most of the stuff he creates but in my opinion Rick Owens is the most influential and important designer of the last 20 years.

@@occultsymbols I think it is very likely we see in headlines that some designer or celebrity bought his skull for millions. Or it ends up being exposed in a art gallery somewhere. high fashion is unjustifiable and that money can be spent on far better things, the only reason people partake in it is to look superior to others, to grab attention, or to fit in with some style or group. it's all pointless fabricated nonsense. the entire fashion industry is numbingly pretentious.

The rooster feathers are actually gorgeous, same with the skull and the lugers and I honestly love how he puts meaning into the minimal, it makes him more relatable in a way, I feel like I put so much meaning in the things that I collect whether they may be small or large, it’s all intentional and Rick understands that because he’s an artist. Plus it’s super refreshing to see a small closet in these big homes. Also Rick Owens leather jackets are legit the most comfortable thing ever to put on, you don’t need a big logo or anything just weirdness and comfort. Overall 8/10 house tour would totally visit again.

Charlie is so close minded it's funny. All art apparently is just meant to look cool. No meaning, no thought put in, it just looks cool. So weird how he continues to criticize and make fun of art forms and what people resonate and think deeply on.

@@Whatismusic123 definitely not my stance or what I was saying at all. Charlie called Rick pretentious for his interpretation on the sculpture and just wrote it off as "a man with a Weiner". You see this in other videos where he criticizes art as well. He writes it all off as stupid if it doesn't look good to him, and if you do like it or find meaning in it you're just a rich idiot. Of course not all art has meaning according to the artists, but how are you gonna put someone down for critically thinking on it? Do you really think whoever made that sculpture just meant for it to be a naked man and that the expression doesn't matter at all?

@@Whatismusic123 As we all know art should always be hyper realistic portraits of landscapes or human faces, there should be no deeper meaning other than looks nice, movies should just be cool action scenes and have no deeper meaning beyond surface level. Art has and will always have meaning beyond surface level, the fact you choose to ignore that, to view art as just an expression of technical skill is reductionist of an artists personal experience, politics or philosophical beliefs, your feign intellectual superiority is telling of your actual intelligence.
