Hoopeston, Illinois is located just north of Danville, Illinois and west of Lafayette, Indiana. There's not much to Hoopeston which is surrounded by cornfields. Hoopeston once had a bunch of jobs in the food industry, but times have changed and there are only a few of those jobs that are left. The town has followed the trend of population decline that is present throughout rural Illinois. Oh... and they need to change their high school mascot. It's never too late.

It's because it's in Illinois, everything in Illinois is declining. Illinois has the second highest property tax after NJ and unlike NJ Illinois is surrounded by low tax business friendly states such as Indiana, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Missouri. Everyone who can get out of Illinois has been getting out of Illinois

@@AdamSmith-gs2dv Property taxes only really matter if your property is worth something. In small rural towns where property is worthless the taxes are negligible. The fact is with nearly nobody with any education and no population to start any business anybody with any sense would move out. Where too? Often it’s to Chicago where taxes are high but who cares since all the high paying jobs are here as are all the top companies (except for John Deere). If you move out of state it’s not because of taxes but likely because of a better job or even better weather.

This is my hometown. I wanna say a lot of businesses have opened downtown in the last year and we're under construction during this time. The burger barn, candy shop, book store, pizza king is expanding, steak house, 112 coffee and wine shop, flower and gift shop, new home store, hotel downtown is under complete renovation, and a tractor supply chain store is joining next to the grocery store. Hoopeston boasts cheap living and most factory jobs in town are unionized nearby making $20/hr plus while neighboring states still have federal minimum wages. Two dollar generals, a new large Casey's, a new subway, new McDonald's, renovated historical theatre, and more businesses joining this small town. During winter, the town lights up the park with Christmas lights and there's a light show at Thomas's house across the street that people drive from all over to see. They have a polar express night for kids with Santa and games and hot chocolate. In October, they have the spooktacular downtown for kids. During summer, there is miniature golf, the splash pad, pool, and a brand new skate park. Don't forget the huge fireworks show and events for independence day. Multiple play parks for kids in every nearby neighborhood. And the local festival draws hundreds of thousands in one weekend. It's the original sweet corn festival. We have a hospital and multiple healthcare companies in town. Multiple gyms. Many antique stores and small businesses. There are a lot of positives if you actually know the place.

I was born not far from Hoopeston, and it's sad to see how things have declined. Despite what the snotty, smart-mouthed Zoomer narrating seems to think, Hoopeston was once a fairly vibrant town with a lot of young people and a lot going on besides farming and canning. It was part of a major railway hub between Chicago, St. Louis, and Memphis and there were once a lot of small businesses and really nice homes there. The High school got its nickname and the festival started because once upon a time, farming wasn't looked down upon, and Hoopeston was a major freight and processing point for a good percentage of the nation's sweet corn production. Maybe if the narrator had eaten more corn and fewer soybeans growing up, he'd have a better perspective on what our Midwest is losing. 😵‍💫

If you want to see a rural non touristy town that's been growing I highly recommend visiting Crossville Tennessee eventually. Our little main street still looks exactly like it did back in the 1940s with our little theater all restored and the shops all occupied. We still have all the shit most towns have on the outskirts of town by I40 including a newly opened Buc ees that's currently the only one in Tennessee. I think it's like this still because unlike Illinois and New York Tennessee is extremely tax and business friendly so the industry in this town did not leave and thus the people didnt leave either

Illinois is losing population NOT because of the weather or people moving to "prettier places". It's because of our shitty politics and the shit hole that is Chicago. Our neighboring states are not losing the population we are, so that throws the weather theory put the window. We have the highest property taxes only beaten by Jersey I believe. Sadly it's the middle/ upper middle class leaving the state.
@obosumba
@obosumba 2 жыл бұрын
The real shit hole is the rest of the state outside of Chicago. Where there are no jobs, nothing to do, property is worthless, nobody graduated college, half the town is empty and of course everyone complains about taxes even though they don’t earn enough money and their property is so cheap that their taxes are minimal. Of course these are all Republicans who blame everything on Chicago instead of taking responsibility for themselves. Chicago is where the middle class and the high income earners are and they are not going anywhere especially not to a small rural town. There is a building boom in Chicago, the rent downtown is averaging $3500/mo. For a 2 bedroom. In the neighborhoods it’s $1500-$2000 for a 2 bedroom. And demand is going up. And there is no way we would ever want Chicago to turn into a Hoopston.

If you pay a high property tax rate that means you don't own an expensive house. If your house costs$100-300,000, you probably pay 3-5% of it's value in taxes. But if your house is worth $1-$20 million, you'll pay less than 1%, often 0.4 - 0.6%. Who SAYS you can't buy having your own way!?

I'm from Danville and would cover Hoopeston basketball for the newspaper before I went off to college. You are forgetting Ohio State basketball coach Greg Matta and his brother Thad -the Butler coach. I remember when they led their team to the state finals one year. The Cinderella team was the talk at the time. The coach had a buzz cut and so did the entire team. The mascot was a plus size girl with green hose and an ear body as the CornJerker. Another big deal was when they had enough population to get a McDonald's around 1980 or so.

Illinois is the most corrupt state in the union. Honestly, people Louisiana and New Jersey feel sorry for us. We are overburdened by units of government taxation. We have 102 counties in this state with multiple townships in each. Redundancy is rampant with each fiefdom having their own tax levy. The state is technically bankrupt with no hope of getting itself out of this mess. This is why everyone is leaving. The surrounding states are all fiscally sound and prospering. Illinois is going down the toilet.
@obosumba
@obosumba 2 жыл бұрын
That’s not why people are leaving. You have two states Chicago and the Red state that is the rest of Illinois. Chicago has the top corporations, top schools, and highest paying jobs. Naturally it also has the highest taxes which trickle down to the rest of red state Illinois. Chicago is going through a building boom due to a population increase from the higher priced coasts and from people moving from rural areas. The reason why people are moving from rural IL and all rural areas is lack of opportunity. Without an education you move down south for low skilled cheap factory jobs. If you are educated you move to the city where the jobs that will pay you what your worth are. Taxes have literally nothing to do with it.

Rural Illinois is dying because both parties pushed job relocation to China, Rural Illinois is a GOP stronghold with most people ironically, existing only because of HUGE amounts of welfare. As a vet who has to go Danville for the VA, the entire county should be be plowed under, replanted with trees, poison Ivy etc. And walled off for 20 years. I think there is a sign on all the borders of the county that says, "If you are reading this sign, you have gone too far". 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣

No new tech companies coming in. People started to leave. Sad that what was a great area to live in is now so depressed. But don't dis my hometown. You didn't live there. Still a good place to live. Illinois is full of great small towns and good people.

@@ChrisHarden I’ve travelled to all 50 states, and seen a lot. Big city hoods run by Democrats are the worst places visually and safety-wise. In Michigan, that’s certainly the case. Baltimore, Colfax Ave. of Denver, Detroit hoods, East St. Louis, Flint, Lake Worth (FL), & the Philly hoods have the D-word all over them. There were scary small towns in New Mexico and Oklahoma though. But, most poor country towns don’t frighten me. I can actually feel safe spending a night in West Virginia.

It is sad that the town has gone downhill, but there are a lot of people trying to improve it. The biggie is the young people going to greener pastures, and just maybe the million babies a year that are aborted in a state that is ran by pro choicers.
@AnN-nj2ny
@AnN-nj2ny 2 жыл бұрын
A million babies a year in Illinois??!! That's some number you made up because it's no where near that. You think it's only non Republicans that abort? You are sadly mistaken if so. And you want babies born to raise population in these towns that don't want change? The town is Republican, the county is Republican, so you can't blame democrats. There are 20 Republicans on the county board vs 7 democrats. Funny how you blame a party that's barely involved there. Typical though. Yes, young adults are more open minded and don't want to be stuck in towns with narrow mindedness and no opportunities. Many small towns don't want businesses there because they don't want it to attract other ppl they don't want coming into their towns. The abortion numbers have gone down in the state thanks to better birth control and morning after pill. There are many reasons for ppl to do so, and I am not one to judge. I'm pro-none of my business. Maybe after you research the numbers, which are very low and not in the millions, you can stop using that as a talking point!

You are totally wrong about their mascot. Hoopeston is a wonderful town. How about saying something positive for any town/city you go into. I'm wrong that the mascot is the Cornjerkers? I'm pretty sure I fact checked it. I said a few positive things but seems like you glossed over it. Having a new Casey's isn't a positive. If that's your towns positive then that's pretty sad. I'm glad that you're prideful of your family ancestry as you should be. One side of mine is from Detroit... No clue who the famous person is and I lived there at least half my life. Who the heck is he? You need to look up the history behind the Cornjerker name as it was created by sources outside of the school. The history is pretty cool even though our town is looking a little worn these days.
