Nice video, very scenic and well shot/edited. Funny seeing you run back for the camera, I'm too lazy and always just drive back to the camera. You certainly get the exercise that I do not. Regarding your lack of power, when's the last time you checked or replaced your air filter? I have had the same issue and found my air filter was a mess.

Nice video and edit. I need to work on my video skills in the future, most the time I get too caught up wheeling and just don't shoot video when I should. Did you use your lockers in that situation? My first ZR2 was a V6 (2017) then I switched over the diesel version in 2020. After an emissions headache under 10K miles and 6.5K later, its finally tuned and dialed in. I have to say that low end torque of the diesel makes a world of difference on the trails. Keep up the great videos, it inspires me to get better with video.

Shooting the video takes away from the enjoyment of the trail to be honest and I have to force myself to just stop filming sometimes and just enjoy the moment. There’s a balance for sure cause it’ll start to feel like a lot of work if you’re not careful. I’ve heard great things about the diesel…would be nice to have the power up there. I’m sure I’ll break this truck here in a year or two and might need to get something new in the future but who knows.

A couple weekends I went up Webster Pass then went over to Radical Hill, there's a few sections of that trail that are brutal too. I didn't escape without some rocker panel damage and rock rash on my rims, also watched 4 dirt bikers eat it on that trail. A Bronco and Land Cruiser were up ahead of us and kept scraping their crap on it too haha.

I’ve heard radical isn’t easy either. That’s why I kind of changed my mind about it after spending a good few hours on that first section. Might try radical hill by way of deer creek next time

I know that area well. Tombstone Hill is big tire and solid axle only and they have problems getting up. Its no joke and 35s wont do it. Ive run every trail in that whole area its awesome !! P.s. 20 psi is not even aired down. Your losing tons of grip and comfort. Go to 15 psi and you will love it.

I haven’t heard of Tombstone Hill…does it have another name maybe? I’m starting to realize that 15 would be a lot better. The new tires feel like they have less give too and are just stiffer in general then my old tires
@Compton4x4 Жыл бұрын
@OrrinLewis That Hill you went up is called Tombstone Hill. There is a big rock below sticking out looking like a Tombstone that's how it got its name. Ya definitely stiff sidewalls need lower psi. Go 15 you will love it and it really does not reduce ground clearance very much.

When I bought my ‘19 zr2 I didn’t know there was a new zr2 out either. Work car shit the bed and was looking for a good used car for work. Decided to look at used trucks at dealerships. It was just after they got in my future zr2. And with the price of used I decided to test drive it along with a Silverado trail boss. Loved the little zr2 and with a little convincing from my wife it became ours. Still love the truck and have had zero regrets. IMO by not promoting it more and hyping it up a bit GM really messed up
@OrrinLewis Жыл бұрын
It’ll take a while for the ZR2 to become synonymous with off-roading like the tacomas and jeeps are. Those vehicles have years of history while the ZR2 is pretty new in comparison I guess. Maybe the the new 2023 version will get more traction

I finally switched from a Wrangler to a Colorado. I had watched many of your videos before hand. I took my first little test run wheeling trip into the desert, up some steep hills and something happened that reminded me of your experience in this video. A sort of power loss. Coming from a Wrangler, i know it's capable but honestly the Chevy v6 is better on the hp/torque. I don't think that has to do with it. I was figuring out and learning about off road mode with the zr2 and i think that power loss might be something deliberate within the system. I had never experienced that in my JK even without lockers. I was in a sort of steep climb, not aired down at all, and i experienced what felt like power loss or a power delivery restraint even when i laid down the throttle. When reading later it seems like it might be computer decision in the vehicle. Question is do you wheel with traction or stability control off? I think that stuff needs to turn off to fully control the vehicle. At least like i was used to in my Jeep. From what i read there's like different traction control modes? I haven't played with it enough. But this video was my first thought and i wonder if you've figured it out since then?
@OrrinLewis18 күн бұрын
@@tyleryork6071 so two things. Making sure my air filter is clean and then putting the transmission in manual mode where you control the gear it’s in. I’ve noticed that in 4lo it will not down shift when it needs to and will stay in to high of a gear for the speed and steepness of the slope that you’re in. I would recommend keeping an eye on the gears yourself instead of relying on the vehicle to do it. I haven’t had an issue since. I only do this when I’m on steep inclines other wise I will leave it in automatic. Let me know if that helps
@OrrinLewis18 күн бұрын
@@tyleryork6071 also I’m pretty sure traction control comes off when you swap into 4 lo anyways. The lights come on saying it’s off once I change over.

Do you still have stock gears? I have a 2019 ZR2 and after I added 33”+ tires I had to regear with Nitro Gear 4.10s and it really helped bring back the low end torque.
@OrrinLewis10 ай бұрын
I have new gears now. And in this video I had the new gearing. Haven’t had an issue likes this again since though. I think the real issue is that the transmission would not down shift on its own when it needed to. Fixed this by leaving it in that manual setting so I can down shift myself. I also cleaned out my air filter which was filled with dust from the trip prior (swing arm city)

Its loss of air at elevation I bet. General rule of thumb is a 3% loss in power for every 1000 ft gained. At say 11,000 ft your engine is at a 33% loss in power directly attributed to lower amounts if oxygen. This is generally why you see heavier rigs going with say a supercharger/turbocharger or some type of O2 injection like NOS. The other issue could be fuel. As you go up in elevation higher octane gas can become a problem due to the lower requirements for compression. Most, if not all, high elevation gas stations only sell 85 octane. Again, all related to your fuel/air mixture, but it might be possible to have too high octane gas AND a general loss of power due to limited oxygen. Of course adding hardware is expensive, but one thing you could try is oxygenated gas additives. These are race additives designed to boost the level of oxygen in fuel. Its like a poor mans supercharger. I have personally used it on ATVs and SXSs that had a loss of power at elevation and found the results were pretty good from my uses. I have a race shop I get mine from, but Amazon has them for order and other places like Summit. With that...great video bud. Your videos are getting better and better. Love the drone shots. I will say I hardly ever remember all of rides that went well, but I do remember like yesterday the ones where things went south. Oddly enough...you learn a lot about yourself.
@OrrinLewis Жыл бұрын
I was wondering about the octane too. I run 87 but was thinking if 85 is better or worse at elevation cause I know the lower oxygen makes the lower octane acceptable…the fuel additive is an interesting option for sure. I’ll assess the truck this weekend in the San Juan’s and see how she performs

Altitude and steep terrain combined with your larger than stock tire size is why you "lack" power. Regear your truck and it will help tremendously. I just went with 4.56 gears on my 6 spd Wrangler. Makes a huge difference in power on the climbs here in Colorado.
@OrrinLewis Жыл бұрын
