A whole "festival" dedicated to true crime is very questionable to me, especially if no proceeds are actually going to the victims/victims families. Not at all shocked at all this petty infighting and rumors between podcasters that treat serious subject matter with such disregard is happening tbh

Exactly my thoughts. When I heard how petty the drama is and how much in-fighting is involved, I was like "yeah, you're all taking true crime and turning it into a fcking party. Karma's a bitch." I think there's like a true-crime "convention" in ... Los Vegas(?) that Swell Entertainment did a video about, and they focus on the victims so I appreciate that. But yeah, I agree, the "fans" (ugh) around true-crime are either really great, or they suck and there's no in between.

I also watch tons of true crime related content, mostly docu series and yt videos, but I never knew there were people creating such tasteless podcasts. Purely the idea of a "true crime festival" is baffling to me. How the hell do you talk about things like torture, rape, pedophilia and murder dressed in a pink Barbie tshirt, surrounded by fluffy rainbow bullshit and confetti? Seriously, what's with all the fucking pink? Squabbling like a bunch of baboons over petty crap, while the people they talk about endured hell on earth. Disgusting.

Imagine being the survivor of a crime, like having your family murdered, being kidnapped, raped and tortured. Surviving all of this and trying to live afterwards. And some sick people decide they love hearing about your trauma so much they want to throw a festival for the murder, rape and torture you endured. Imagine hearing someone say they love listening to the crime that was committed to you. Its INSANE. Where have our human morals gone? It's like an episode of black mirror.

I don't have to imagine, it's happened already. I've been a victim, though I lived. And I appreciate certain types of true crime for what it brings to the public's conscious. I don't love the mukbangs and the cruel podcasts that mock victims or talk in extremely dramatic voices. But if my case were covered I would hope it would stop even one person being tricked like I was. Or give them hope that you can still live after. I didn't die ofc, just things intense enough I don't ever get the opportunities to talk about that part of my life. I'm thankful for creators and viewers that care. People tend to hate true crime blindly, and honestly I think its harder for the victim's families than the victims themselves, from what I've seen. I'm sure my own family would be upset, even when I was thankful. They don't want to hear me describe what happened, and I understand its hard for them, but its isolating for ME the victim. I appreciate a community with many members that are survivors and people who do want to hear our story and understand what we went through. Not all victims will or should agree with me, we're no monolith. But people have always hated true crime, and I've been shamed plenty times for having such a dark interest. I just want to share another side that victims can find a LOT of comfort in this programming and I'd just ask you think of us too when attacking the community as a whole.
@Waspinmymind

@@brigade7678And a lot of victims are also treated like shit because of true crime. Just because you’re a victim doesn’t mean you can’t be a part of the problem. Your victim hood is not a shield to what your hobby could’ve hurt. Like how turning to drugs is a bad coping mechanism. This could also be like that. I suggest you start questioning why you need to consistently defend yourself and mention your victim status around true crime. Have you’ve done anything to hurt someone just like you? With this hobby of yours.
@brigade7678
@brigade7678 10 ай бұрын
@Waspinmymind Yeah you sound real kind & worried about victims here bud. You speak with real venom at someone who's crime in your eyes is...listens to podcasts. I do not often find myself defending my interests or bringing up my victimhood, in fact I said the exact Opposite. It's something people do not listen to and I never feel comfortable talking about. It's isolating to be a victim to such extreme crimes, there's not many who will listen and even less who will listen without wincing and pitying. When I've been shamed it's 2nd hand, people complaining about true crime in general and not AT me. I even specified I know other victims aren't the same as me, nor should they have to be. I take no joy in true crime content, I tend to avoid "comedy" sides. I'm asking only for people to not demonize a HUGE group that has a lot of victims/survivors in it. I'm asking YOU to consider how judgemental and harsh you are toward a victim of violent crime who calmly explained an experience counter to your opinion. But sure, I'll reflect on my actions when listening to true crime. And I hope you sit calmly, breathe, and ask why you wanted me to feel guilty for a hobby? Who are you to shame one victim while defending another? To be hurt or offended is human. It's something you have to manage and turn away from when it's harmful to you. As awful as that can be, it is still your feeling to manage.

A true crime convention should have speakers (police, family of victims, survivors, family of perpetrators, psychologists, etc) go over their experiences with killers and share ways to protect yourself and recognize dangerous or concerning behaviors, and the proceeds go to organizations to help victims families, DV shelters, etc. It shouldn’t be a Comic-Con for true crime nerds

They used to do things like that. I’m sure some still do, but the events are probably gated being more for professionals to be the spotlight instead of KZbinrs/podcasters so they don’t get all the attention from the “”community””. They’d have criminal investigators, detectives, interrogators, policemen who were on scene of certain cases, prosecutors, defense attorneys, etc. coming to those events to speak about the forensics, interrogation methods, how autopsies would be done, raise awareness about cold cases, how they handled a case for the victims and their families, and so forth. It wasn’t called a “true crime” convention or anything, but they were usually more obscure and way less commercialized as it was more reserved to inform those who wanted to learn … Until the KZbinrs, podcasters, and social media influencers started popping out “true crime content” and began going to them and spinning their own ideas of creating their own little conventions with way more commercialization and promotions (which were more like meet and greets and ways to sell stuff). It wasn’t about informing people about things, it became about _entertaining_ people by talking about popular cases as if it was a movie they had just watched. The true crime “community”, imo, deserves all the criticism and mockery for what they have turned a genuine interest into for monetization and fame. It’s become so disgusting to watch people treat it as entertainment and get giddy every time one of them uploads a new video or podcast with things like “omg I am soooo ready to watch this new vid!! gonna cozy up and tune in!! gonna get some cleaning done as I watch along 🤪” … about someone dying. Yuck. I really don’t know how some of them sleep comfortably at night knowing the money they have made is from the loss of others’ lives and the pain loved ones have suffered under the excuse of “informing the public and raising awareness”.

real. gay men can be misogynists, fascists, racists, etc. honestly as a trans guy i get really annoyed when people jump on the idea that lesbians have a transphobia problem (there is one, but it's freaking uncommon) when it's statistically far more common for gay men to be bigoted towards trans men especially, often because of their hatred of women being projected. it's a yikes. gay guys are easily the most accepted queer folk in the lgbt community and the common obliviousness to their privilege is absurd

We have lost our cultural third spaces. We have home, we have work, but we don't have public "third" spaces anymore where we can gather with others and just...be in community with other humans. Malls were the last big third space, and I think that conventions are our new third space. That is why I'm not surprised that there are true crime conventions, or more specifically, true crime podcast fan conventions. We are craving community.

I agree, church is a great third space. I know religion has been bastardized and can be problematic, toxic, or at its worst a cult. But in general, church was a place where a community could gather and build relationships to work together and know each other. I wish more churches were community-oriented instead of preaching fear and dogma and siphoning money out of the congregation and spreading hate and judgement. Sermons are supposed to be about values and virtue. More ppl would go if religions hadnt ruined their reputations.

Long time TCO listener here. Ive been to a live show but not OF. My heckles started going up with Patrick years ago because of the way he sexualized killers & victims and other behaviors he presented as quirks. I would often look to the FB group to see what others were saying and if I ever expressed a negative view about the show or questioned g/p authenticity I was dogpiled so I guess I just gaslit myself and let it go. About a year ago that changed when I tried to get a refund for my "patreon only early release ticket to OF1". It was being held the same weekend as my brothers memorial. I didnt get a refund. TCO employee wanted physical proof I was standing by my brother grave reading poems through sobs to family and friends that weekend instead of being at OF. After that I stopped making excuses and started listening with open ears, the red flags were EVERYWHERE. The virtue signaling was off the charts and then when he called Mallory Beach a dick, I was DONE, as were many others. Many of us on reddit started adjusting reviews and quietly unsubbing/cancelling patreon. The Ellyn drama didnt start to drop for like another 5 or 6 months. Thank you for making this video and spreading this news to many DBs who didnt know! Lastly rumors that a journalist from Rolling Stone is writing an article are swirling. People are saying they were interviewed. Stay tuned and stop giving Patrick Hinds a single penny!!!

I don’t keep up with their social media and only listen to the podcast and didn’t know anything was wrong until I clicked on this video. Honestly, it’s very shocking but I can see how it happened. I remember Patrick promoting the Obssessed with disappeared podcast on every episode until it suddenly stopped. I never questioned it but it was really odd. Patrick is very loud and can be very abrasive, but it wasn’t as noticeable when it was being bounced off of Gillian’s brunt personality. It’s funny how Gillian was supposed to be the angry one and Patrick was supposed to be the “sweet lovable” one. Patrick played off of the sassy gay stereotype and became more and more into that role as the show progressed. They haven’t mentioned anything about what happened since the episodes are pre recorded so this was honestly a shock. However, characterizing Terra being forced to kill a man in self defense as her, “claim to fame” seems extremely disrespectful. While it is true that she’s been granted many opportunities because of what she had to go through, it doesn’t diminish the seriousness of what happened to her. The public doesn’t know why she freaked out in that moment, so framing it as her , “Weaponizing her PTSD,” seems incredibly baseless and insensitive. A simple misunderstanding could have triggered her legitimate mental health issues, which would still mean Ellen didn’t do anything wrong. This doesn’t have to be a good guy vs bad guy situation.

It feels like P and G have gotten really big egos now and all they do is talk about themselves and really just gloss over the actual story/documentary. - Thanks for brining this to light for everyone that doesn't really follow social media drama!

Nothing wrong with being interested in true crime, but this strange shift from it being this kind of dark topic handled with some level of care to wearing Barbie customs to a whole convention dedicated to these crimes is really strange. I feel like these people got lost in the plot of what true crime is. Real crimes with real victims, not a place for witty banter or bright colors and jokes.

Austin, hearsay comment section posts are not very reliable. Next time you see one that interests you, ask yourself "how do I know if they are telling the truth? How do I know if they have the correct information and are not mistaken?"

I have been a fan of Ellyn from her Broadway career and realized I also knew Joey. They are the nicest most sincere people and had no idea this happened. Patrick used to be awful and degrading to Ellyn, everyone would agree. Melissa from mischief is from Broadwaycon and is basically a con artist. The lies they wrote are revolting. Good coverage. Thank you.

Been a true crime fan ever since the Discovery, Nat Geo and eventually, Crime + Investigation Channels tried to properly pioneer this genre, but never in my life would I ever dream nor wished to see a FESTIVAL about it. An informative event maybe? That might be possible as long as it strongly adhere to respect and protect the victims and spread an educational awareness intended by the event.

Keeping up with true crime out of interest, and going to a convention all about it, feel like two very different things. At that point it feels like it’s leaving the general curiosity about the topic territory and entering using murder as entertainment territory

From a psychological stand point I find documentaries about serial killers and their victims fascinating, but I know it’s a morbid fascination and more based in “what on earth could make someone turn out like this”. I also can only watch stuff like this a few times a year because it always breaks my heart for their victims. That might sound corny but thinking of these horrible things and someone living through them, it breaks something in me. I don’t love true crime or love these monsters, even though I love a good story these victims aren’t stories, they were living breathing human beings with lives and loved ones… all that to say I find people that say they’re “obsessed” with true crime so weird and a lot of times gross. They’re not good people let’s be real. Even sometimes I’ve watched Bailey Sarian’s videos and despite liking her a lot, she herself had admitted she feels a disconnect from these being anything but stories now since she’s done it so long, but what’s worse are her comments section will be people teeheeing about a minor joke she made or her dropping something or just being her, and it feels SO gross reading it when she’s talking about some dude disemboweling a bunch of people. This all just feels like late-stage-internet disconnect from humanity. It really scares me more than these killers sometimes.

@@Jade-hr1mf You're right, it's incredibly unfortunate for the family that the right person is not behind bars. That person was not Adnan, hence why he was finally let out after serving more than 2 decades of an unjust sentence. If you believe he is guilty, I have to assume you don't know much about the case. I agree that he probably won't do something like this in the future, as he never did it in the first place. Justice for Hae Min Lee, hopefully they reinvestigate with more prowess and find the responsible party.

I like true crime, but my favorite part about it is hearing about the victims, not their deaths, but how they were as people, what they liked to do, their pets, their families, anything that made them who they were. I wish more people who discussed true crime would delve into that aspect. I feel like it gives them back their humanity and makes them something more than a cold body underground. Having an entire festival about their murderers and calling it "obsessed" seems really disturbing to me...

Patrick's idea of handling bad publicity is to pretend it never happened. He did the same thing with Chrissy Tiegen--she was on their show for a minute and they both fangirled until it came out that she bullied Courtney Stodden to the point of encouraging her to off herself and when they were pressed to comment they just zipped their lip.

I had made a comment under a YT video about a recent true crime horror story and someone replied explaining how terrified her family is that their personal familicide event could possibly end up online via any one of the hundreds of TC channels or podcasts. She and I exchanged quite a few comments and it truly opened my eyes to how intrusive, invasive and in such poor taste 99% of these types of channels operate and are. This “con” sounds like a money grab over anything else. Gross. I should mention I’ve never heard of any of these podcasts and I’m also a brand new sub to your channel.

14:49, I often find misogynistic men base their respect of women based on how much they’d like to/their ability to have sex with them. If the woman isn’t conventionally attractive, automatically their respect lowers. If she’s hot but rejects his advances, he’ll call her every synonym for “sl*t” or “b*tch” that he can think of. Gay men obviously aren’t attracted to women, so for that one portion of their population, women are automatically much lesser to them, it’s just they’re able to hide it better? Don’t even get me started on the gay men that decide to become a stereotypical caricature of black women.. This obviously does not apply to every gay man ever, but ignoring it makes people complicit. Thank you for talking about this whole story!!

I think “true crime festival” is a misrepresentation of what ObsessedFest actually is. It’s a podcast convention primarily. Most of the podcasters cover true crime but not all true crime is violent. The talent at both this year and last cover things such as wrongful convictions, prison breaks, and I Think Not literally covered a series called Pink Collar Crimes that dealt with mostly white collar crimes. That’s the direction a lot of the people involved go with their live shows and panels at OF. Several DO cover violent crimes but they’re respectful of victims and families when they do. I Think Not even donates to funds and rewards for the victims of series and docs they cover. The comedy comes in with reenactments, aloof law enforcement, and silly situations like a robbery gone terribly wrong. And Bobbie Lynn just wanted her $143 back!
