Pregnancies are not all the same. Nobody noticed my last pregnancy, until I was 8 months pregnant. I swam 2 hours a day and only gained 20 pounds. Elizabeth could have hid a pregnancy, especially with that clothing.

I don’t know how she would’ve gotten away with being pregnant and having a child. She was being watched from the day she was born. When would she have had the chance to hide for 9 months? I personally think Tom Seymour ruined her by making her fear not only sex, but also the aftermath of the rumours that ensued afterward. Add to that what she saw in the loveless marriage of her sister Mary and I think she didn’t want to be told what to do by a “lord and master”. Also, Dudley married her cousin Lettice Knollys and I sincerely doubt he would have done that if he was already married to Elizabeth. It’s a nice fairytale but a fairytale nonetheless.

Exactly, there was zero personal time, there were constantly ppl around her, even in her bedroom. Not to mention all the foreign spies. She wouldve had difficulty just getting away for an hour to meet a lover with noone knowing, no chance she would be able to hide a pregnancy and birth. If there had been anything to the rumours other than smears over this woman daring to hold a man's position (in their eyes), they would absolutely have used it to have her removed.

She was a queen! She could go anywhere and at any time she pleased! She also had William Cecil, who was very clever and knew how to cover up such a state! She knew how to evoke fear in her subjects just as her father had done! She wasn't anyone to spread rumors about, true or not. She knew and learned very early, how to protect herself and as I said previously, he had Cecil who owed all he had to Elizabeth and he wasn't willing to lose it all, which may well have happened if she lost the crown.

That’s the minor issue. The bigger one is, as a ruling monarch, she would be CONSTANTLY under guard and surrounded by her ladies. Her being alone would be EXTREMELY unusual for the times and her circumstances. This was merely gossip by bored courtiers with nothing better to do with their time

If Elizabeth had been pregnant, she would have married immediately or face having her child 'banished'. Of course, many Kings had children out of wedlock who went on to live a privileged life.

Elizabeth routinely had swelling issues while she was growing up. There is no way she could have had a child with the amount of ladies in waiting she had. They would have see her on a daily basis. That's not even counting doctors and midwives that would have attended her. A few people might have kept quite out of loyalty but not everybody. People talk. There would have been someone saying they knew the midwife that delivered the baby or they saw a child taken from queens chamber. Where are the accounts of food aversions or cravings? Seems the accounts at the time of other pregnant queens always mention something early on to hint they thought a queen was pregnant.

In those days---and in fact into the twentieth century--there was no way to hide from a girl's mother, sisters (if sharing a bedroom and usually a bed), and maids when the girl had her monthly period. No sanitary pads or tampons then. A girl or woman had a folded cloth between her legs, tied in place (I am not sure exactly how), more or less like a diaper. My grandmother (born about 1890) told me how the maids had to wash these cloths. The laundresses of a royal household would have known exactly when a female royal reached puberty, when she had her period, and when she ceased to, during pregnancy or at menopause. And there is no way every single one of the maids of Elizabeth's household, or of Katherine Parr's household while the adolescent Elizabeth was under her guardianship and living with her, would have kept silent if Elizabeth missed her periods. Human beings love to gossip! And if she'd become pregnant and borne a baby, her maids and dressmakers would have been aware when she needed new, looser clothes. Elizabeth had plenty of examples in the recent history of her extended family of the bad things that happen to royal women in marriage--death in childbirth, execution, divorce, being at the mercy of an unloving husband who had all the power--and was forced to set aside her natural inclination to marriage and motherhood and settle for the adoration of her court and her people (most of them). It may have even saved her life, since she steered clear of foreign feuds and wars and managed to balance the ambitions of her ambitious noblemen.

@@elainechubb971 Human beings do love to gossip. They also like to stay safe. If something like that was kept secret, it would be sticking one’s neck out to disclose state secrets. It was a police state, not like the free society we have today. Yes, certainly the laundress would know. They often served their whole lives and were inner household. Trusted servants were trusted for a reason - they didn’t gossip. They knew better than to gossip and would have been very aware of the consequences. No one wanted to get on the wrong side of the Elizabethan equivalent of the Gestapo or KGB.

If true, that is outrageous that QV would seek to destroy a 300 yr old document by, committing it to the fire. How absolutely, dreadful.... especially if you consider how much she was fastidious about having anything and everything pertaining to her and to Albert preserved, at all costs. Speaking of Victoria: Please consider doing a video about which of Victoria's grown children were the last to live at Osborn House and or when was it given up as a royal residence before it was turned over to the country of England as a living museum treasure? Thank you for your consideration.

The pregnancy could have been concealed for many months underneath all the clothing that was worn, but her closest servants would have to have been very loyal and trustworthy for the act of sex to have occurred and the baby to have been snuck away. Elizabeth may not have wanted her descendants to ascend to the throne, if there were any, and was content to have it go to James, who was raised as protestant, after his Catholic mother's death.

Elizabeth liked the idea of being the “Virgin Queen” as a replacement for the Virgin Mary who was the Patroness of London (“my fair lady” the nursery rhyme is a sly reference to the Virgin Mary). She wanted her image replacing those of the Virgin Mary in peoples’ homes. My favorite theory is that Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford was her child, and that Edward de Vere was in fact, “Shakespeare” (spear shaker). See the film “Anonymous” with Rhys Ifans. The de Vere line ran out. No one even knows where he was buried. His education was impeccable, indicated vast travel, familiarity with languages, mythologies, ancient history etc. Many prominent scholars have agreed with this theory.

It would have been in the interest of the crown, security and all involved to keep that secret and few would have been privy to it, IF Elizabeth were to be pregnant without being married. It would also have been in their interest to secretly marry them without allowing the husband any possible gain other than bribery of silence and a promise to keep his head on his shoulders if he kept the secret. This way, a baby would be born legitimate and secure the throne if anything happened to Elizabeth or if there were a sudden need to secure the throne. All the lives of everyone associated with the crown, their welfare, land holdings and livelihoods depended upon security of the crown in Elizabeth’s bloodline. It would have been jeopardized if she lost her image as the Virgin Queen without a proper marriage to a suitable match well in advance of a pregnancy. Robert Dudley was highly controversial and having been previously married, unsuitable. It would also have been wise to have the child adopted in secret and raised by a noble family of her close supporters, befitting his birth and station, but also properly raised, extremely well educated and kept close to the throne in security, in case they needed to raise him to position of her heir apparent. I wonder if there were changes made in staff or routines of the royal household around that time. Would they have appointed any particular maids in waiting? It would be convenient if they were either too young and virginal to comprehend the significance of certain changes (to recognize signs of pregnancy) or those who might assist in keeping secrets.

I'm wondering about Dudley's own marital history and personal life. Was he never married to anyone, have no partner or family at all? Or did Lord Dudley himself remain a bachelor for life, who happened to enjoy a close platonic friendship with the virgin Queen? Or am I just a cynic who finds this extremely unlikely? And the Queen imprisoned or even had executed people like me who spoke aloud. Over-reaction, much? The lady did protest extremely loud 😂.

Elizabeth being married and producing an heir would not have given the Catholic powers any more reason to invade and depose her than they thought they already had. So Liz didn't need to remain a virgin for national security reasons. Furthermore, producing an heir would have essentially guaranteed a peaceful succession. The alternative that Liz chose was to turn the country over to a foreign power in the form of the Scotsman James Stuart.

You've a great deal of audacity to refer to Her Royal Highness Elizabeth the First as Liz, as if she is some common Windsor (Saxe-Coburg-Gotha). If one were to shorten her name at all then one would call her Bess or Good Queen Bess or Gloriana, or The Virgin Queen if one must but not Liz. Also, you are incorrect as Elizabeth was not going to give up the power, nor should she have, to any man would she have married. Mothers and children both had a very high mortality rate, so actually it was very much the safer and wiser thing for Elizabeth to not marry.
