The Super Stock Dodge was also mentioned in the Little Old Lady from Pasadena. I grew up in the 1960s one of my high school buddy's dad had a 62 Plymouth with a Super Stock 413 in it. There were very few cars that could beat it. Even in 1969 when we graduated. A big block Stingray could beat it but not by much.

Yes, I've owned 11 Vetts over the past 40 years and loved them all, including a '68 427 4spd Roadster.....and I also owned a factory stock '62 Impala SS "409" dual-4bl and 4spd car and even a '62 Dodge Polara 500 with "413" and 4spd. My dad's first super stocker was a Plymouth Savoy 413/410 that he raced for Al Roberts Plymouth in 1962. The Beach Boys' song was not the way it would really have been.

The 413 wasn't that much heavier than the stock 361 BB (413 was an RB). The 361 was standard in the higher-end Belvedere and Fury, but the Savoys were a bit lighter. The 361s were the first platform used for higher output with the in-line dual quads with the oval shaped air cleaners. This was referred to as the "RTS" for Rapid Transit System. Those are actually quite rare as well, but nowhere near as gnarly looking as the short-tunnel cross ram intake and dual Carter AFB's. I have a '62 Polara 500 2-door that's my retirement project car. It has a 361(which, by the way, produced a very respectable 300hp with 325 ft./lbs. of torque). That Max Wedge is one seriously sweet looking ride. I was never much of a Corvette person, but that '65 is a beautiful looking ride. Still, as has been mentioned throughout the thread of comments, the 413 wins just about every time. Those 90-degree RB big-blocks produce overwhelming amounts of low-end torque on launch and a drag race is won in the first 80 feet.

I was fortunate enough to have a 1967 Corvette base 327/300 4 speed. A close friend, AJ, had a car similar to the one in this video, I believe it was a 1965 Dodge Dart 413. We did not race off the line, but we did “road race,” driving fast in upper Westchester where in the 1960’s the roads were often almost empty, curvy, hilly, two lane with no posted speed limit, where it was difficult to exceed 70. My understanding being that at the time in New York State, unposted roads had a 55 mph speed limit. At the time I had no idea his car, much less attractive than a Vette, would become classic. I expected to win our races and I did. Ten years later I was driving a 1977 Chevy Vega and the nationwide maximum speed was 55. Things change.

It’s crazy to think that savoy grocery getter will annihilate one of the most highly praised corvettes, where was the coverage back then. Studebaker R3 vs savoy would be a cool match up lots of underrated cars. I still stand by my statement nothing could be better than the corvette and if there was something better just didn’t get the coverage. I'll never forget when my dad came home with his his new Chrysler 300-K. I was a block from home on my bike with some friends, when my dad spotted me on his way home and pulled over saying "Let's take a ride before your mother makes me take it back." That made me laugh, mom didn't. She almost never said no to him. It was the most awesome car I had ever seen: Midnight Green with a then "experemental" 8-Track player and a 413 Wedge Cross-Ram dual 4 bbl setup. Dad took it out to a racetrack he had just built in Byron Georgia and the guys at the track told him to keep it over 90 mph on the high bank or it wouldn't stay up there. I didn't know at the time how nuts that was. Bias ply street tires on a heavy car? Maybe on today's best radials, but I'm not sure how many laps I'd push my luck with that heavy car at A.I.R.!

Back in 1962 I actually saw a 413 Dodge Dart S/SA mop up everything including 409 /425 HP in S/S Class. Running mid to low 12's ( Top illustrator ran Stick Shift against Automatics.)

We had the this Plymouth with in the 4 dr. Wagon. I was 4 years old when dad pulled up in this with his buddy. I still remember mom behind the wheel and dad and his rocking the front and back of the car giving mom a bouncing ride and her laughing. I loved that wagon and it was well hated. I also love the ‘62 Dodge. Virgil Exner was Fired for the weird designs he came up with down sizing and trying to make them European looking. The same man was praised for the Forward Look of the 1950’s Chryslers.

I had a really cool analogy in a second page that I didn’t end up using but I should’ve used it the late 50s was like being at the party in the early 60s it was like the hangover afterwards like what the heck happened.. I know Virgil Exner was the leader of the forward walk he’s in charge of all the fins he didn’t want the fins to go away.. he got fired over this because Newburgh president of Chrysler went to a garden party where Ed Cole was present Cole talked about the new Chevy And how much smaller it was Newburgh panicked because Plymouth was a direct competitor to Chevy so they thought that they were downsizing all of the cars in Plymouth had big cars sales probably would’ve suffered.. unbeknownst she knew Burgh Chevy was still making full-size cars they were just releasing a new line of cars that were smaller than the full-size cars..

I think the 413 would eat the Corvette though that car when it hooks up it hooks up.. and it’s light .. I worked at that Classic Car dealership over that summer and I really really wanted them to just drive both of those cars first one to 60-70 miles an hour winds or whatever.. we never did it because the Corvette is six-figure car. I got the opportunity to push both of those cars. It’s harder to push a Corvette. I had to push the Savoy about a quarter mile back to the showroom. I shut it off. Those things are very temperamental with the cross ram they don’t like to start all the time and they can turn with the wind from tuning great to not running at all

​@mylanmiller9656 Funny thing, i had a 1970 Nicky Nova SS with the 402cid L-78. This "396" was rated at 375hp. The original L-78s were rated at 425hp and even that may have been conservative. My agent just told the insurance company that it was a Nova and let them assume it was a grocery getter 😊 I also had '71 350cid Corvette Convertable with AC and 350 Turbo automatic that had no power that the insurance company slapped a big premium on just because it was a Corvette.

They said "Super Stock Dart" which would roughly be the same car as the Savoy. In 1962 the Dart series were "full size" cars in Dart 330 and 440 trim lines. They were the favorites of drag racers because they were much lighter than the big Custom 880 or even the Dart-based Polara 500.

As mentioned below, the 413 in the song "Shut Down" is a Dodge Dart. When I hear the Jan and Dean song "Little old lady from Pasadena", I always pictured the "shiny red Super Stock Dodge" referenced as a '63 or '64 Dodge 330 (basically an up-trimmed Dart) with the 426 Max Wedge option. Am I wrong?

It occurred to me after I posted the above that the reason my buddy called it the "Super Stock engine" might have been to avoid someone breaking into his place to steal it. I'll ask him about it this summer. "Guys come to race her from miles around, but she'll give 'em a length and then she'll shut 'em down." Sounds like early sixties MOPAR to me! Ever heard the Pat Traverse (the best IMHO) version of "Hot Rod Lincoln"? I have fond memories of that song playing on the radio while traveling much too fast as a passenger in a baby blue '61 Newport with a 413 salvaged from a '63 Imperial. My dad's boss had a brand new Mercury with a 429 and it drove him nuts that my dad could leave him behind without even trying in the Newport.

I drove the savoy it hooks up good my boss took me for a ride and pushed it I didn’t drive it to the limit like he did if someone was to put a $100 on the dash while in it.. it would t be possible to get it. Thank you it means a lot going to do some more in the future I’m going to compare a factory five cobra to a viper I hope next week if the Challenger is still there we have a 70 Plymouth Cuda I might compare those two there’s a couple other cars that are there that can be compared with each other I like doing it outside the box comparisons I thought of another comparison that would be totally outside of the box and I might start doing comparisons like that call them non-comparable comparison I’m going outside the box kind of thinker I got a lot of flack for it though.. but I’m glad that you enjoy it I love comparing cars that don’t usually get compared.. =) I asked my boss if we could take both of those cars down the highway and shoot them because that would’ve been an amazing sight to see Plymouth Savoy max wedge super rare car Chevy Corvette fuel injection super rare car I don’t think I’ll ever see them in the same place again but we sold the Savoy so that’s never going to happen or at least not now with those two cars.. A comparison that I really wanna do totally outside of the box would be 1957 Rambler rebel versus 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk both cars severely underrated both cars are fast they hold both the top two spots of fastest cars of the 50s the AMC rambler rebel was the fastest car produced in the 50s it blew the Corvette out of the water and it never got press time because it was so good and it shouldn’t have been but it was.. according to research that I’ve done that car is a four-door family car can go 0 to 60 I’ve seen as fast as seven seconds that’s faster than anything produced in the 50s in America.. couple caveats to that I heard that you had to have a 327 with fuel injection that’s right AMC offered feel injection just like Chevy but nobody ever heard of it because AMC was a very conservative company. And just got dusted under the rug so to speak.

But I have read that the earliest Corvettes were not very sporty in the area of handling, but they are very nice looking for sure! Also, I've always liked the Studebaker Golden Hawk, with its sleek looks and sweet roofline. I'll keep watching and try to keep my chats shorter. I just love cars!

Ok I've had both cars on scales and the Corvette is 3125 lbs in real life. The normal Savoy was 3650 in a form that the public could buy. The Aluminum findeted, bumpers and acid dipped cars are indeed that light but so fragile and none were actual steet car but sold as race cars to stock racers

The Savoy Max Wedge 413 would beat pretty much any of the small block Vettes , including 375 hp fuelies. Futhermore , it could also win against Big Blocks too including L78 396 , and would be a close race with L71 427 and LS5 454 Vettes. However it didn't stand much of a chance against the mighty L88 427 , those were underrated by at least 100 hp and had a top speed that was crazy for the time of 170 mph 🏁

Very good comparison but you have the weights wrong. The Savoy with a 413 weighs in at 3,530 lbs while the 65 Corvette with a 327 weight in at 3,117 lbs. I have the Corvette and can confirm that in real life.

I wanted I worked at the Classic Car dealership last year we had both of those cars and I asked my boss is there anyway that we could take those out back and see which ones faster I got to drive the 413 I did not want to drive the Corvette the Corvette was a whole lot more money it was almost double might’ve been even triple the price A lot of times people ask me why I don’t drive a lot of the cars insurance is a big reason but that’s not the main reason the main reason is new cars are replaceable these aren’t if it has historical value and you wreck it you just ruined a part of history and I don’t wanna be that guy so I’m pretty content with just going for a ride and some of those really expensive cars

The Mopar will walk that Vette all day. The Vette isn't a drag car.. it's a touring car. That Plymouth, or big brother Dodge as it's supposed to be, is designed for straight line acceleration. There's no comparison and it shouldn't have ever been a question. Especially after 60 years. Even with second day mods, the Plymouth would be at more of an advantage.

I wanted so bad to take both of those cars out and run them. I got to drive the Savoy last year. I worked at the Classic Car dealership. My boss told me he’s like get on it don’t be scared. I said it’s not my car and he took me for a ride in it And I couldn’t believe what he could make it do.. that car was unbelievable. The only thing I will say is it could change with the wind that car could run good and in a moments notice it can run like complete garbage because of something really stupid like the gas cap isn’t venting properly. The crazy thing is it’s fast it’s affordable it isn’t pretty. It’s got an acquired taste but the more you’re around it the more I guess you grow love it. I suppose Corvettes are overrated anyway in my opinion.

I am addicted to big inch big blocks, have had some interesting examples, a COPO 1969 SS 396 375HP El Camino four speed, a 413 Sonic Ram Plymouth, and I was getting the small parts together to put a late 50s Desoto hemi into my 65 Plymouth Valiant when my wife totaled it (my mom bought it new, it spent it's life in the garage and had almost 900 thousand miles, and was all original), and a 1941 Willys coupe with a 421 (I think) Buick Wildcat engine with Hillborn fuel injection, M22 four speed, 57 Ford rear end, the engine was set back about 9 or 10 inches, and would do bumper dragging wheel stands, I miss those cars and those days

I do not believe the song limited the race to just the quarter mile. As a result, in a top end in race the Corvette would blow away the Mopar. Additionally, if the race was conducted around a curved roadway the Mopar would have no chance.

You have it all wrong. a 1965 small block corvette weighs in at a dry weight of 3100 or so + options like radio, etc.. The Dodge is a heavier car and with that big block I bet more than the weight you claim. I have had many many muscle cars and about 10 C2 Corvettes. On the Street assuming they both have 411 gears, with out doing burn outs the Stingray with its 49-51 weight distribution and Independent Rear Suspension would get the Dodge off the line, but the Dodge would chase it down in the 1/4 mile, it would be a close race as a properly driven FI 1965 Corvette can get in the mid to high 13's in the 1/4 easy. So flip a coin if it gets caught but on the street the Corvette would wax it off the line, but at around 80mph especially at the track the Dodges would catch and pass the Corvette by the 1/4 if the start wasn't blown too bad.
