They certainly were a bit… can I say it, “Outshined” by the Big 4 (or 5 if you want to count Stone Temple Pilots). But I think it was mostly because those bands were the progenitors and were the ones who led the genre. Whereas, Collective Soul, Seven Mary Three, Live and the like just walked the road the progenitors had paved.

@@michaellynch5254 They are dude. I mean, I know it's subjective but they can back it up extremely well. Collective Soul never had the proper marketing to make them seem "bigger" and more well-known. They are cool with keeping it low, and always giving the spotlight to their friends. So Elton John actually duetted with them and he is great friends with the singer Ed Roland. He gifted Ed a grand piano in 1999 to write songs on. He still has it today- I've been inside Ed's house. In addition, they have SO much special material that is unheard of, because they went to independent labels after Atlantic Record raped them. Their sound is pop rock redefined a clear mix of country rock, classic rock, pop rock, blues rock, soul and pop ballads all come together to give this band a rich, unique rock and roll experience. Their music saved so many lives, including my own when I was 19. I'm now 22 and I work for my favorite band in the world because they actually CARE about their fans. They remember all their super fans' names, bring them on stage, do meet & greets, and hell... they let you hang out with their family! They are SO chill! Ed is also a stud, like not only does he look amazing and is so healthy for his age (58) but he always had the stage presence of Michael Hutchence, the talent of all the greats in rock, the wisdom of Warren Zevon and the fashion of Elton John. He totally captivates on stage and when he talks he is just the sweetest man ever, the whole band is so intelligent, real, raw, southern and fun. I could go on. Overall, to ignore this band is to do a terrible disservice to yourself.

From the founder of the band, Ed Roland (who is also the singer, one of the guitar players, and the producer), in an interview I just listened to before watching this reaction video, he said he did that "reverse echo effect" (he didn't call it that, he just said that's how he got that sound in the vocals at specific parts of the song) by singing through a toilet roll tube. @ilionreactor10792 жыл бұрын
@@matthewdrake4385 Rock musicians of the Era invented a new language using tools derived from psychoactive and psychedelic experiences. They were developed in the 1960s, but perfected and applied more widely in the 1970s. Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Yes, Rush, so many more, were encoded with this toolkit, and can be best decoded/appreciated using that toolkit. Guitars are good encoding tools, and the Moog was co-opped right after its invention. Music of other genres often was missing this additional element, but it survives waves of pop pablum and surfaces occasionally in a breakout like grunge (for example). It is getting more rare at the moment, but I'm seeing trends away from rhythm music back to melody, which carries a significant portion of the emotional content. Like the 70s, a lot of it is underground. Bands of any era using this toolkit fall into that same basket, in my opinion.

Love this band! Next on the list should be "The World I Know." The official video for that tells the story of the song. For anyone who has contemplated suicide, it's a really moving song that's strangely uplifting at the end... the video uses a lot of symbolism. Formed in Georgia, Collective Soul debuted in 1994 w/ this album "Hints, allegations & things left unsaid"😂 which went 2x platinum in the US (2 million copies sold)... They were marketed as 'alternative rock', but they had keyboards and were definitely not an indie band. Their 2nd self-titled album was a bigger hit selling 3x platinum... scored MTV hits like 'The world I know' ... 'Gel'... 'December'... Their 3rd album 'Disciplined breakdown' was more polished a record... sold platinum in 1997, scored MTV hits like 'Listen'... 'Precious declaration'... 4th album 'Dosage' went gold in 1999 w/ the single 'Heavy'... Later records did not sell as much... but Collective Soul still records & tours.
@RetroSoulGirl2 жыл бұрын
Dude, you should explain why their records didn't sell. They don't suck at all now. But in 2001 they were "raped" by Atlantic Records. For example, "Heavy" went to #1 for like 14 weeks or more and Atlantic refused to do a music video for it. Ultimately, Collective Soul chose to go to independent labels for their longevity and to have full ownership of their songs. As a result they made way more money going independent then they have with Atlantic Records. What sufferer was that they had no way to market themselves (especially in the 2000s before streaming) so their albums did poorer in sales in comparison to when they were signed with Atlantic which makes sense as they're a major label. Collective Soul formed their own label called El Music Group just to keep themselves going. These days they are being rediscovered thanks to the internet and streaming, but I jsut wanted people reading this to know that Collective Soul is not a 90s band. They made more rad albums outside of the 90s and continue to go as strong as ever despite multiple band member changes, personal traumas and label issues. Ed sings SO good now for being 58, it makes me CRY! They are a band that gets either better with age, or stays jsut as awesome. NEVER a disappointment. Don't let the weak sales of their more recent albums make you think that they aren't any good! I'm 22 and I have seen them 8 times already, and will be going to my 9-11th shows this summer!
@sumonjamal16532 жыл бұрын
@@RetroSoulGirl Believe me, I understand how you feel... There are great 80's bands that still make great music & tour... but can't sell records like they used to: L.A. Guns, Kix, Quiet Riot, Warrant, Great White, Dokken, Winger, Night Ranger... ...But there just comes a time when a band is too tied to a certain decade. The same thing happened to 90's bands in the 2000's (and Collective Soul is a 90's band) - The Cranberries, Filter, Bush, Stone Temple Pilots, Soul Asylum, Candlebox, Stabbing Westward, etc... all declined. Record companies can't sell a band if the public isn't buying the record. That being said, Atlantic Records has a terrible history w/ their past artists... like Ratt, Manowar, Dream Theater, Robert Plant, Bush, Judas Priest, Scorpions... it is the music business.

"The World I Know" is a much better song by them. Amazing writing and production. Hope to see you react to it someday.

Collective Soul is a wonderful band. Brings back memories of time with the family on the boat on a summer day. Their Greatest Hits CD was one of our go to discs for lounging on the boat. Thanks for the reaction!!

I have loved this song from the moment I first heard it. I am so happy that you enjoy it too. It makes feel relaxed, yet energetic too, along with positive feelings. Inspirational song in my opinion. Awesome choice. :)

You guys want to hear another song of this nature, try "Sex And Candy" by Marcy Playground. Perfect music for a barbecue or sitting out on the porch. 🎶

Absolutely! If anyone hasn't, they should listen to their eponymous debut album front to back...It's one of those rare albums that doesn't have a single bad or even mediocre track (At least IMHO)...a few other "Total" albums off the top of my head are the eponymous debut from Eve 6, Minutes to Midnight from Linkin Park, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank from Modest Mouse, Lullaby's to Paralyze from Queens of the Stone Age, Mesmerize from System of a Down, and Rise Fall Rage and Grace from The Offspring...

Great post-Grunge band! If you dug Collective Soul, I suggest another post-Grunge band, Our Lady Peace!

When this first came out, I felt almost a Beatles vibe. Not in the vocals, but in the musical composition.
@bqkmg20372 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say beatles doesn't feel like it to me...imo it sounds more of 70s rock group vibe instead...90s were another 70s revival i remember....good times.

Great reaction. Collective soul had many hits in the 90s... They were really good. Dolly Parton did a cover to this song, and it is actually incredible... amazing. Anyway, thank you 😊

I have been following Collective Soul since 2006, great group, great guys, great music! My next show will be my 20th. Their fan base is huge, and I have many friends on Facebook just from knowing the band. Next songs to check, The world I know, where the river flows, precious declaration, heavy, she said, run just to name a few. They've had 7 top ten hits in their career so far. Enjoy!!!

Collective Soul carried me through the 90's when great music became scarce for me. " Hints Allegations & Things Left Unsaid" was a godsend for me. I was grasping for air as far as music is concerned and Collective Soul gave me oxygen. "The World I know" is a classic of that era and you should react to ASAP. A brilliant song by a brilliant band.

Good band. I seen them live once some years ago now. That was when they had barely gotten started. I honestly consider Collective Soul sort of their own style. Kinda post grunge/early more modern rock. Never heard the Dolly version being mentioned.

I had just about given up on radio at this point in my life, not being a big grunge fan. Then I heard Collective Soul. Amazing band and great songwriters. A musician friend of mine after listening to their Disciplined Breakdown album for the first time said they were the most melodic band he's heard since the 70s. I have to agree.

Collective Soul was my favorite band for atleast a decade. They got me through my last years of nursing school, in 1993and 94. Shine gave me the inspiration to keep going! Amazingly enough, their songs just got better and better! Check out as many as you can they are awesome!
