The reason why Family Island got so small, while Friendship Island became so big to the point of obsuring the former, is because teenagers tend to value their friends over their family. We got to see that in this movie. Grace and Bree were Riley's core friends during her middle school years. They spent a lot of time together, having fun together... To a child/teenager, that's everything. So, when Riley faced the possibility she may not see them again, she started to spiral down into a wave of anxiety, desperate to try to fill the gap her friends would leave once they started high school. I have no doubt that, in time, Family Island will grow again and return to be the central island of Riley's personality, especially when she decides to build her own family.
@bobatea28452 ай бұрын
Yeah thats exactly it!! And from literary standpoint, I like how it demonstrates the sequel's shift of frame compared the first! The last movie was about family, and this movie was about friendship. So having that reflected in the islands exemplifies how much Riley's friends mean to her by contrast. Communicating to the audience what differentiates the two movies; exploring different relationship dynamics!

I love, love LOVE the message about the sense of self during the climax. They could have easily just had Joy restore the "good" sense of self, but they didn't, because that's not how it works. I know Pixar sequels can be hit or miss sometimes but this one really hit it out of the park for me!

As someone who's been through it too often, this is the most haunting portrayal of a panic attack I've ever seen on film
@Ari_C2 ай бұрын
I haven't had many panic attacks but I've had my fair share of anxiety attacks and it's frustrating how many reactors I've seen call that scene an anxiety attack. I could see it be argued that in the later half of the skills camp Riley was in an extended anxiety attack but that scene immediately after she body slammed Grace definitely tipped her in to a full blown panic attack. watching it in theaters for the first time had my heart pounding right along with Riley's, it's just such a perfect visual representation of what it can feel like

Everyone will be talking about how Anxiety was so perfectly depicted here (which is not bad, I just want to make a comment with a different direction) so I want to highlight what I liked of the other emotions. 1. Embarassment is the biggest out of these emotions, and he was strong enough to restrain 5 emotions AT ONCE. That showcases how strong of an emotion can embarrassment be when it comes to impact; most of the times you will forget of your other emotions when you realize you're doing something ridiculous or you've been caught. 2. We often seen envy as a synonim of jealosy, but Envy here was depicted as the one who was emulating everyone around her; she tried going along with anything Anxiety did, and when operating Riley, she often acted easygoing with anything the others were suggesting. When Anxiety couldn't get Riley out of the bed, Envy did. 3. Ennui was depicted as boredom, but I see her as indifference, an attitude often seen negative but it usually helps you save emotional and mental energy when doing anything, specially taking insults.

This movie's message is SOO IMPORTANT! In order to see yourself for who you are, you need to see ALL of you. And when you do, your mind finally starts to clear, and you can stop being blinded by the past and future, and instead be aware of now. How she feels the bench and hears the sounds, to be in the moment. To be here. THAT'S how you start to understand yourself. And the representation that as a kid, we're mainly driven by our emotions. But as we grow, we develop a better sense of self, and become our own person. Her wanting Joy at the end is a sign of how you won't immediately feel happy, sad, etc when you want to, but that you know how you feel and how you want to feel, which is another aspect of aware-ness.
@hh-bluedynamite2 ай бұрын
Also, the fact that Riley is now actively calling for Joy is a nod that as you get older, you have better control over your emotions. If you need a specific emotion, you can call upon it. It's like how Mom's Sadness is a driving force with her emotions because, as the mother, she would need Sadness' other capabilities. Similarly with Dad and his anger. I guess your leading emotions depends on what is going to be a major part of your life.

I dont really see the connection since gender and sexuality are two different things. On the other hand, Riley would be under the non-binary or gender-fluid umbrella if /gender/ is the key factor of how the emotions present themselves (considering the mom presents as female, dad presents as male, and their emotions reflect that). Thinking about how Riley's family island is so small. It reminds me of how when I was younger around Riley's age that I had taken my family for granite and didn't realize until after I turned 18 that family is really important to keep close to you especially if they love you unconditionally which not everyone has of course. When you're a preteen, you focus so much on your hobbies, your friends, new things of media to be obsessed with, and other stuff that it kind of blurs the connection to your family.

The driver seat at my console is shared. Three take shifts driving: anxiety, sadness and anger. Unfortunately there isn’t a designated driver when they get drunk with power.

I think family island is just smaller because in your teens you tend to have a much larger social circle than just your family and those external connections to your friend get the primary focus of you social interest

I'm assuming family island is so small because is just Riley mum and dad, small family.

Maya Hawke (Stranger Things) voices Anxiety. When she rants and raves like a lunatic from pure anxiety gave her away

You know it's a good panic attack scene when *I* started having panic attack symptoms in the theater. Absolutely brutal yet therapeutic to watch as someone who has literally dealt with anxiety attacks since I was Riley's age and didn't even start knowing how to process them until I got a therapist as an adult.

I think the reason you liked anxiety at some points is because she's voiced by the actress who plays Robin in stranger things. And we all know how much you love her

I think the family island being small thing means that family to become a "lesser" part of rileys life

For some having socks that fit perfectly feels suffocating and drives them crazy. I LOVE that they didn't backtrack Joy's character in this movie. She learned her lesson and it stuck, even when things got hard she never once thinks Anxiety or the other new emotions are bad or shouldn't be expressed. She's learned every emotion is important and needs to be expressed, to work as a team.

Anxiety is just min-maxing Riley to victory! Wait, no, not victory. A nervous breakdown.

OK so on why family island is so small, my guess is that as a kid you love hanging with your parents, having family activities and just being with them because you're not sure how to navigate the world. But as you grow older and especially in your teenage years, you start to socialize more and prefer hanging with people your own age, that's why Family Island shrunk, and Friendship Island is so much bigger in comparison. Now, this isn't the case for everyone but based on my experiences and stuff within the context of the movie, that's just my interpretation.

I saw some people saying that Fear and Disgust didn't do much in the film but I disagree! Fear was responsible for planning their escape from the brainstorm and Disgust was kind of involved in convincing Rally's secrets to help them escape prison! If anything, all the emotions in this film played an important role in getting back to the control room.

Family Island was small because when you're a teenager you tend to value more your friends than your family.
