Welcome back to the channel and the first episode of Your Next Watch. We really wanted to create something for you to experience what its like to own watches you're interested in before adding it to your collection. This is where Your Next Watch comes in. In our regular episodes, we will look at popular watches from brands you love, and let you know what you can expect from owning the watch. Things like how it really wears on the wrist, the best ways and places to wear the watches and a range of strap suggestions to completely change the look, all told through both real life footage and studio shots.
To kick things off, we wanted to start with a watch that is pretty popular in the community. You probably remember the Seiko SARB was technically discontinued last year, however you can still pick them up online and sometimes even brand new from certain dealers.
The watch comes in at 38mm wide, with an 11mm thickness and 44mm lug to lug. This basically means the watch is easy to wear on most wrist sizes. Add on top of that a 20mm lug width and it makes this watch a great daily piece, perfect for regular strap changes. There is no doubt the watch has more of a dress aesthetic, but after nearly 3 years of ownership I've found it actually surprisingly versatile. The watch is powered by the Seiko 6R15 automatic movement. This movement has everything you would expect and want in a watch. its automatic, can be manual wound, it hacks and has a power reserve of 50 hours. This is perfect, as it can sit comfortably in a rotating watch collection over the weekend and will still be going on Monday.
Let's get into the design details of the SARB. The first thing that you can’t miss is the indices and hands. Not only are they both highly polished, but they also have subtle chamfering and angles throughout, resulting in the watch catching the light perfectly. I've lost count the amount of times I've looked down at my wrist to see the SARB shining, looking like a watch worth way more than the price tag.
It also has some great subtle details that can easily be missed. Much like the hands, the edge of the date window cut out also get’s the polished treatment. The applied Seiko logo is opposite to this as it has a more simple flat satin look. The dial of the SARB really makes the most of the real estate it has with the seconds tracking being on the edge of the dial. Again, small details like this are huge positives.
The case has a great balance of polished and brushed surfaces. The top of the watch is mainly vertically brushed, with the edges and sides polished. The watch has a display case back as well which is always appreciated.
the finishing on the bracelet is similar to the case actually, brushing on the top with polished sides. However the lack of micro-adjustments on the buckle isn't ideal. With just two adjustment options I think it's time we take a look at another bracelet option for the SARB.
A personal favourite is our Kirkstead I've recently fitted the watch to. As you can see, the ends on the bracelet are a perfect fit for the watch. This is because I've actually used the standard Seiko curved ends and centre link that comes with the oyster style bracelet. If you want to create this look you'll also have to use the standard Seiko pin as well to secure them all together.

I've had the sarb035 for almost 2 months now and I absolutely adore it, with a chocolate brown strap it exudes a coffee and cream kinda vibe. First mechanical watch and have no regrets whatsoever. One of the reasons I brought it was reading the artical you guys wrote on it so thanks!

Lovely review. I got my SARB035 around three months ago and definitely see why it is a such a popular watch. The cream dial is great and I really enjoyed the stock bracelet which has a very delicate mirror chamfer along both edges which is not always apparent in photos. The stock bracelet is very elegant. That said, I put on a Strapcode Super Oyster which exudes a sportier look and has more micro-adjustment at the clasp. I will checkout the Kirkstead too - I have always been a fan of the Omega/President-style bracelets - and maybe look at adding a SARB033 to the stable too!

Can you guys please offer this bracelet in either all brushed, or with a polished center link that integrates with the stock SARB end link? Having to use the brushed SARB center link to connect the watch to the polished bracelet doesn’t look as good as if everything was properly uniform.

In the video, the kirkstead president bracelet has 3 micro adjustment positions, but the current version on the web site only has two micro adjustment positions, which is the same as the OEM bracelet, which is why most people need a replacement in the fist place.

I just purchased the Watch Gecko Kirkstead. Nice over all bracelet, but the fold over clasp is really floppy and won't stay flush with the bracelet.

ive had mine for 2 years now. Couldnt have picked a better watch for every day use. This review forgot to mention some of the best aspects about it, such as the sapphire crystal and the 100m water resistance. This watch works well at the office, in a suit, or at the gym.

I saw someone with a similar watch but the bezel was more pronounced and flat, angled. What's that called? I'd love to search for it. The dial seemed larger. Nice styling to the whole thing. Maybe a Grand Seiko. Not an option for my wallet but I'd love a somewhat muscular, no thrills watch.

Still available for under US$400 (Dec 2019), which could be the last ever genuine Seiko bargain. Equivalent quality is at least twice the price. A classic, beautiful timepiece.

desert knight s the main seller on amazon at those prices is amazon itself (.com and .jp) who receive the watches directly from Seiko. Of course, cannot speak for Amazon marketplace sellers or eBay sellers. At Amazon Japan, Sarb 033/035/017 all available at around US$350.

Own one, absolutely love it. If I may nitpick.... the sub-minute marker makes the dial a little too busy, I wish it comes in 39mm case and yes the lack of micro adjuster on the clasp.

Excellent video thank you! Question for anyone who might know. Just recently purchased this watch and the power reserve works fine on a full wind and also keeps running on my wrist, HOWEVER it will NOT keep running on a Winder. Is there something about the 6R15 that doesn't allow the winder to keep it moving ? I have two other automatic watches but both with Swiss movements and they never stop while on the winder. Anyone heard of this issue? Thanks in advance .

My SARB035 does not keep the best time, but I still wear it every day. It’s gorgeous, and the proportions (case to bracelet) are perfect. The bracelet still looks great after more than three years of constant wear. It’s classy, sporty, and sophisticated - a great go-anywhere, do-anything watch.

Archer Three years is quite a good run for a daily driver...how’s the stainless holding up against scratches?

Willard Hooton, The bezel has a few scratches, but it’s not horrible. The bracelet doesn’t scratch easily at all, so it still looks great. The underside has some micro -scratches, as is always expected. I’ve already had it serviced once for $150. And I’ll probably have it serviced in 2024.

Mine is still in the box totally untouched and that is my biggest regret, I bought it as a possible future investment watch along with SARB035, SARB065, and, SARB017. Agree, w/o a doubt, you're straps elevate the watch. Personally, unless skinny wristed, i think the sarx 035 (whilst same mmt) is much better in many ways (incl bracelet)

SARB035 > SARB033. Main reason for me is that Seiko's typical "puke-y green" lume on the hands blends better with the off-white dial of the 035, whereas the lumed hands on the 033 contrast with the dial more, and lume on a watch like this is a bit distracting. (I wish they had never put lume on it at all, but it's a minor concession). And a minor nit-pick: dust on the sapphire crystal stands out more with the black dial background than it does with the off-white of the 035, where you almost don't even notice it. I also think white/cream/off-white dials are more versatile on strap changes. I've had both for a while now, and I grab my 035 probably 2 times to 1 over the 033.

Hey chaps at Watch Gecko - I'd really appreciate some input. How easy do you guys find changing straps on the SARB033? I have the Kirkstead bracelet on currently but I had a guy at Timpsons change it for me because I simply could not get the spring bars to release the strap , even when using a spring bar tool. I only ask because I am keen to purchase the Simple handmade Italian chocolate brown strap you recommend in your videos. If I am to change my straps regularly I really want to be able to do it myself without paying a shop to do what should be a relatively easy task.

Not all springbar tools are the same…I have four of them, all from different companies, for my Hamilton steel bracelet for instance, their tool worked while the other 3 didn’t. Different lengths, thicknesses, etc. affect the ease of strap and bracelet removal.
