It's not really universal because it's basically only "viable" on Mualani and Neuvi (HP scaling DPS units) - and even then, it's outperformed by other 4-stars options - namely the new Natlan craftable for Mualani and often Prototype Amber for Neuvi as it helps stack furina's fanfare if you don't have her c2. At best, on Neuvi, assuming you don't need healing and energy, it will be a very minor increase in personal damage. Also, using pale flame on any catalyst user currently in the game is a DPS loss. Even if you somehow manage to make it hit for ~150 000k (which would be a feat considering it takes into account enemy DEF and phys res%, unlike Clam), that an entire dedicated build and support cast for a measly... 15k DPS. Which is insanely bad. Any effort would be more beneficial elsewhere. It's fun to try, but that's where it stops honestly.

This weapon is so much fun. I found out the effect can kick in with a plunge attack while chasing a foe during the Aranara quest line. Barbara tore through the enemy. My first R5 Catalyst and my first Level 80 catalyst. Amazing weapon. (Barbara used to be on Lost Prayers)

You gotta try the event weapon on Mualani, simply bumping into enemies with your shark counts as a “hit” so they explode without even have to press basic attack. Also it’s physical damage so you can kill hydro-immune enemies with it, it’s pretty nutty. At this rate I don’t know if I even want to upgrade to the ring of yaxche, if/when I ever get a catalyst billet; I’m having too much fun making enemies explode by bopping them.

I have been using this weapon on my neuvilette for overworld instead of amber and its actually pretty good. casual 60-80 k physical dmg every 15 sec plus now he can kill hydro slimes XD. I think this increases his personal dps but on furina teams with no healer (Kazu+ Zhongli) the team wide heals and energy regen for abyss is better i guess

Yeah talking about Festering Desire, I remember how so many hated it. Some people intentionally didn't even redeem it from the event page or didn't care about the refine mats, stating how useless that weapon is. Who knew three years down there will be a character making such good use of it?

it's scarily strong on kokomi as you simply add a 40k damage to a healer at basically no cost, since E -> dash -> Attack is still slightly faster than the 2 seconds of character swapping cooldown. That is, if you play her as a healer. for dps you get two instances per rotation, however you'd run a hydro damage goblet, so it's about 60k, which makes moonglow a slightly better option, while amber reduces your ER needs which is now CRUCIAL, so it's quite... situational. Honestly running some calculations might make for a nice theorycraft video and a nice contribution to kqm

This is so fun on Mualani, fun fact with Obsidian set the 2 piece passive also affects this weapon's DMG but you gotta hop on your shark before dealing any DMG. I got Neuvillete's weapon and at first I was using it on her but after I saw someone using it, deleting effortlessly a group of enemies only by surfing through them I was sold, so I leveled it up and tried myself. It has comparable level of DMG if not better than Tome, sure Tome is a stat stick, the passive doesn't works on her but the event weapon being able crit it's criminal, the lack of crit DMG was compensated by the extra DMG physical so in terms of DPS it's as soon as Tome.

Mualani's normals don't even target the enemy properly, as she is hella half-baked (and going into surf-mode just for the meme hit makes no sense) so only Barbara, Baizhu, Neuvillette and maybe Tankfei can use it "properly".

Going into surf mode gets you 40% crit rate and the dmg% from 4pc Codex, so I think its worthwhile, but maybe clunky still yeah, and definitely loses some of that immediate “click one button get a bunch of damage” value.
