Funny enough, when you use Neuvellette for the first time the game tells you to press specific button (probably even says hold), but the tutorial is so small and dissappears after first usage (or probably even swap), which can be done accidentally by luck, and you can't find it anywhere after. I noticed it, bc i notice every single message that pops up, but some people can play with the tutorial "press button to open the map" in the middle of their screen (early ingame tutorial) and never notice it is there! I met such people.

Honestly, the idea of an older lady getting into gaming is just so heartwarming to me idk. Also I think sometimes game devs do run into the "familiarity paradox" (which is what makes SMM(2) levels way more difficult than creators realize). When you've done something over and over again, sometimes you forget what its like to be "new" to something. At the same time, alot of people complain when an FPS gives a tutorial for say...ADSing and firing your weapon, intrinsically, 99% of players know those buttons like the back of their hands. But the 1% who has never touched an FPS, maybe never touched a game before, might need that tutorial!

FPS is just spamming buttons if not too much is going on besides your own skills Gacha Games like Genshin are way more demanding your time on other stuff rather than only limited pulls.

I think a lot ppl dont realize how many casual players in genshin. I know a few who pick up the game bc they were curious or just like the exploration aspect but doesn't know or care anything about combat or other mechanics, they mostly stop and come back after few months so I really appreciate hoyo giving qol for them like the training guides and such (I know most veterans hate them and treat them useless but they do help a lot)
@atomicgrave43402 ай бұрын
I mostly find them annoying, when these casuals start to whine that they can't clear some content without making any real attempt to learn the game, its mechanics and search for tutorials. I just don't like this type of laziness tbh. Other people who just play casually and mind their own business are fine, and if they're trying to learn that's even admirable. No offense.

@@atomicgrave4340 none taken, but this particular casual is an Italian nonna. It honestly sometimes opens your eyes to the scale of this game's playerbase. It also explains why Genshin doesn't give a flip about their vocal playerbase.

@@RKNancy well if you have legitimate excuse like this current example then it's fine, and i doubt she really whined, like some people do. This game is difficult! I use Ganyu, Albedo, Nahida and Venti, that's my favorite team! But i can't clear abyss with it? Build Bennett or Kuki? I don't like them! I only want to play these units, and i want them to 36* abyss, i don't want to hyper invest, lvl 70 should be enough! Make abyss easier!" etc, especially i don't like the type that says "i have real life you know, a proper job, i want this content to be easier!" (meaning that if you play this game properly, build your characters etc you probably have no life, no family and no job). This type of whine... Some even worse.... Ugh... I'm a casual too yk, i have a job and a family, i'm 36 ffs, and i play like twice or thrice a week. But for some reason i find time to farm or explore (i might be slow with quests, but i can afford an hour for exploration and 15 min for dailis etc), so i can't understand these people.

Genshin being as successful as it is is heavily in part due to its appeal on a more casual level. I try keep in mind how the way I enjoy the game (and obviously my knowledge about things in the game) is quite different from how many others may enjoy it. Which is why Im so wishy washy in answering specific questions on my livestreams especially, because any decision you make it Genshin is so context dependent to personal preferences on top of the situational utility of different mechanics in the game too. Theres basically never a universal answer for many questions people ask about what they should be doing in Genshin. Imo, I default to the answer of doing whatever we find fun.

I'm over 60, have been playing Genshin since a couple of months after launch, and just this year started defeating the weekly bosses and got through level 12 of the abyss. I finally figured out charge attack (Neuvilette was a big help with that actually), but I know I am awful at combat still. But a lot of people who visit my world comment on how I have 100% every area because I'm pretty good at exploring and puzzles (unless they involve jumping). I literally a week or so ago found the "resonance" thing in the team selector and went "ooooooohhhh, THAT's what creators mean when they toss the word "resonance" around". People go through things so fast and rarely explain WHY things are done in a certain order or what terms mean. The terms "skill" and "burst" are not in the character talent descriptions!!!! I cannot tell you how useless it is to be told to "burst" when what is meant is to press "Q" or use the second level combat talent. I have a terrible habit of putting my hands one off on the keyboard so I hit Q all the time instead of W, so bursts were usually triggered in town. So I never used them in combat for a few years! I didn't know Bennett healed until a year ago or so (thank you youtube creators)!! He was one of my mainstays for a full year, but I never used his burst in combat because I'd trained myself to avoid the Q and didn't put it together that a lot of the "kit" for combat was that ability. I'm very grateful for the people who have helped me beat some of the bosses while I learned HOW to do things and helped me get some of the boss achievements. It can feel ridiculous to have level 90 characters, 100% every area, be AR60 and be basically a "noob" when playing.

Thankfully someone described the process in the comments and that's how I finally understood the stupid mini game that is cooking... i believe the character abilities are officially called "elemental skill" and "elemental burst" (although it's easy to miss and i wouldn't blame you). people tend to shorten it to "skill" and "burst", or "E" and "Q" because the abilities are bound to those buttons on PC. "E" and "Q" terminology would not be as helpful to a mobile only player since phones use touchscreen controls. genshin PC should let you rebind buttons, i don't play PC so i'm not entirely sure how it works but you can probably make a more comfortable setup if you want. the default controls are documented online if you want to switch back.

Turns out that most of us who play games were taught at some point (like when we were kids by our friends), it's just been a long time and that can be a barrier to entry for older or inexperienced players. Completely agree about game tutorials being bad - not just Genshin but across most games generally. It's typically show and tell. They show you it and then text dump. Very few do it the proper way - it should be show then give practical examples and scenarios where you learn by doing. I'm not a fan of trials of characters personally or at least the way Hoyo does it. There's very little explanation it's just - here's the character, press buttons and see what they do. You're trying to sell a character - give them a proper introductory tutorial at least. It's also evidenced by the elemental reaction tutorials in Monstadt it's basically element a+element b = reaction. Even reading the in-game text tutorial tells you nothing. There's little nuance or explanation as to key stats and factors into the reaction. Not everyone is a pro-gamer.

I think a guided trial should be optional. Some people really do need/want to be shown how to play a character rather than told. I'd much rather watch a vid on how to play them later instead and just play the game. They also have trials for rerun characters that some players have/aren't interested in, so it would be nice if there was the option to skip to just using the character and get the rewards or something. That way, everyone's wants are satisfied as far as trials go
@Moggetslittlesister2 ай бұрын
@@evewhoo yeah for sure that's the best of both worlds. The trial could first have a skippable guided tutorial followed by what we have in the trial now.
@lucassatie2 ай бұрын
@@Moggetslittlesister I've actually really wondered this too. Even Zenless Zone Zero now has much more focused tutorials on how to use each character's skills. But particularly for Genshin's showcases, the little text box at the beginning does nothing for anyone. Plus, they tend to slap together rather sad team comps for these showcases. I've always thought they'd be a lot better if they used better team comps and actually walked you through the significant bits of their kit.

Yep its kinda the whole thing about assumptions that I was talking about at the beginning. Game developers usually assume some amount of baseline knowledge about games or what-not, which can inadvertently make a game inaccessible to some players. Which can be a good thing if they are trying to target a specific audience of course, but its especially problematic in a game like Genshin that can appeal to many

it really depends on what kind of game she wants to play since there are so many different kinds (and what the game is being played on). my suggestion is something like animal crossing or stardew valley, or slime rancher, theyre not fast-paced and lets her get used to holding a controller and pressing buttons. you could even slow it down further with a turn-based game like pokemon which has cute creatures as well. mario brothers games are easy to pick up if she wants to try platformers. there are plenty of story-driven games out there, think about what kind of movies and tv shows resonate with her and go from there. i am totally biased because its my favorite, but if you want to show her something like genshin you can show her the legend of zelda: breath of the wild. its more skill-intensive than the others, but i find it very rewarding. i think the above are the most non-gamer friendly games, but there are also a lot of games that you can play together. snipperclips is adorable, and It Takes Two is very good as well (though i havent personally played it, just watched my friends). maybe sit with her and browse some games and see what stands out to her. watch the trailers, see what art styles appeal to her. maybe all the games i suggested are too cute for her and she wants something dramatic and dark, or a fighting game!

I feel like a decent addition to the game would be an option to enter like a "Tutorial/Practice" version of the boss fight that walks you through HOW the bosses mechanics work and what you need to do to counter or clear the effects they put on you. Of course, it shouldn't warrant any rewards, but it would give players who either 1.) Aren't well versed in games a chanced to figure out how things work, and 2.) People who don't read OR still don't understand how certain mechanics work a chance to figure things out without feeling like they're stupid for not being able to do something they weren't taught very well from the get go cause Hoyo failed to teach them how certain mechanics work.

So that's why healers are important too but a little bit of dodging is more important in these few cases.

And I'm assuming you don't do arlecchino perfect 18 second rotations so if you get hit/ you dodge more than 3 attacks you add about 2 seconds to your rotation which makes xinqiu's cooldowns which are good for someone like cyno alot better.

Hadn't needed the Cryo Cube's items before since I didn't have Eula yet, so when I first went to fight it and it told me to use the charged attack I didn't know what to do and had to do the research. I had used charged attacks before (I know I found the "claymore spin" at some point), I just never knew what it was called.

One of the lost things about manuals in games is that they were often written in a way that non gamers could come away with an understanding of controls allowing the in game tutorials to be a bit more brief. In general, though, as gaming becomes more and more popular, we have to get into the mindset that people may need more thorough explanations. And this video does it wonderfully

Building Qiqi is also great for accounts like these. (Meaning accounts that dont focus on abyss. Since killing enemies really quickly is not necessary in open world). If laradona has trouble surviving weekly bosses and such, then she can use an on field Qiqi team. Qiqi has some of the highest defensive base stats in the whole entire game (second highest base defense in the whole game (922 I think..something like that) and over 12k base hp if I recall correctly) and Qiqi can heal herself ALOT even if the build u use doesn't focus on healing. Meaning, u can take a whole bunch of damage with Qiqi and dont run a huge risk of dying. (Even with furina drain.) And if u want to be truly immortal u can stack beidou and xing qius damage reduction (that they get through their elemental burst). (Beidou requires a lot of energy especially if u dont use fischl on the team, so people need to keep that in mind.) U don't even need beidou. Xing qius damage reduction is more then enough. If u run a nahida,Xing qiu, (full em build) raiden/kuki shinobu, and Qiqi team, u have okay damage and REALLY great survivability. (With Qiqi being on field) There is also other Qiqi teams u can run that have less survivability but a bit more damage as well. All in all, I know laradona didn't specifically need help with survivability, but this is just something to think about if u just want to survive the abyss just to get the stars or just want to use a team where u don't have to worry about dying. Hell, I'm an ar 60 player who can consistently 36 star spiral abyss (and 6/8 star imaginarium theatre) and I still use on field qiqi/on field healer teams when I fight Arlecchino just because I don't want to worry about dying, lol. Reading the info dump for each new character can be daunting especially if they introduce mechanics that is difficult to understand or grasp in how they function. It's why watching a Genshin CC do the leg work and explain/show off the new characters helps a lot on that department. There are a lot of things that need to be learned to get better in this game. With bosses, it all comes down to experimenting and trying your best to read what the boss mechanics that are introduced. It can be hard to do when the text only lasts like 10 seconds on screen before you have to do these mechanics yourself. That's why experimenting in those fights and doing them several times by messing up is the fastest way to learn them. For making teams, it's generally 1 main damage dealer that stays on field to deal most of the damage, 2 sub damage dealers that leaves behind ways to deal damage (they also help trigger elemental reaction for main damage dealer or if you have Shenhe for Cryo, Goro for Geo, Faruzan for Anemo would supercharge the damage of that particular element so you would focus on a single element), then support (healer or shielder). You can of course make teams that have no support teammates but that makes it very dependent on how skilled you are in dodging and knowing the fights well. These are all things that Genshin does poorly and would be helpful if Mihoyo does a better job either introducing, displaying, or explaining especially when it comes with gameplay mechanics that are vital for progress.
