Ummmmm..... You do know that it's not really lost, right? It's just the longer you go without using a language, the longer you need to hear it to make it come back. Turn on the tv or the radio in that language. Keep it on and don't worry about understanding. Do that day after day. Eventually it will come back. It might take awhile but it will. The brain does NOT ever forget a language!!! It's just buried and you've forgotten where, like your old 8-track tapes. Point is, it's not gone:-)

In a video of his getting his nails done, the woman was initially surprised and then completely opened up and most have mentioned that they wished their kids would do more to speak their language and specifically the dialect that is largely used in NYC downtown such as Fujian. It is a beautiful thing to see each time how a little effort can bring different cultures together in this way.

In the early 2000’s I worked with two friends (both white American doctors) who spoke fluent Mandarin and seeing the patient’s faces when they started speaking was funny as hell. The BEST however (and we used to observe without being intrusive) was when one of these two would go to translate for one of our other doctor friends who is Chinese-American but doesn’t speak a word of Chinese. The white doctor and the Chinese-American doctor would approach the patient and the patient/family is looking at the Chinese doc thinking he is translating for the white one but when the white doc would bust out in fluent Mandarin the reactions were priceless 🤣 I give props to Xiaoma for the Fuzhounese skills because this is a dialect that at the time we had a difficult time finding translation for sometimes, even the language lines often didn’t have anyone who could translate and most of our Chinese interpreters couldn’t speak or understand it at all and there was no Google translate (not that it’s appropriate to use that in a professional setting anyway).

@@ciocomacchiatto9029 that's exactly my point. If someone studies another language then of course they would be good at it, no matter the colour of their skin :)

For most western countries, English is not their primary language, so unless you speak their actual language, they won't be impressed. My boyfriend is Chinese, but speaks Russian and he was always met with shock and questions when he spoke it.

Hi guys from England. I've so enjoyed you watching XiomaNYC. I've been following him for some time. Your reactions are wonderful. There is a great joke in Britain regarding how bad we are at learning languages. How does an Englishman ask for bread in Germany? Answer, he says" Can I have a loaf of bread!". When the German person doesn't understand him he says it louder and louder until the understand. You should always keep up your own inherited language. Not just because it is a great and cool thing to do, but it shows respect to your heritage. My love and best wishes to you guys. Dave in Yorkshire England.

Thank you for answering the cultural appropriation question. Politicians will tell us that we are degrading people but what if we are supporting and appreciating people? I love learning about all cultures and the uniqueness/similarities in each compared to mine. Great channel!

I’m Vier and What you guys said in the end about immigrants not really opening up due to feeling so different is 💯 and goes for all backgrounds. Even learning the language was tough as you said because Americans would make you feel ashamed and insult your uniqueness. Great capture and video guys.

It's a shame he's gone down that "study for a day, direct a conversation" magic trick with every language under the sun route that most if not all of YT's polyglots do. It was nice seeing him hold actual conversations with people.

True, but still cool to see how fast he learns what may take a casual learner one year to speak.

It's kinda annoying he's showing off and bragging. Like if he wants compliments he'll just go to a restaurant or shop and speak in Chinese. Like he wants to make himself feel better just to get attention.

My native language is Finnish. When I was six, I lived one year in China and went to local daycare. I was able to speak chinese back then. But after I came to Finland, there were no opportunities to speak chinese, so i forgot how to speak it. Now I am 16 and relearning it. Learning to speak Chinese again is not so hard( words, tones etc.) but writing on the other hand is a whole different story.

Born and raised in Toronto in the 60's, I speak Cantonese, but never learned to read or write. I think Xiaoma is doing a fantastic job! It's nice to see other cultures learn Chinese. I think the 3 of you will make a difference for the new generations. Their is 2 white girls and a black gentleman on you tube that speak very good Chinese, you should check out their videos.

Mine is Cantonese and I barely can speak the language since I haven't used it in long time (except in simple conversations between my grandma and my parents - mostly by listening, rarely speak back in Cantonese). I remembered I knew a lot of words and able to carry a conversation better when I was a kid and before I started to speak more English. My parents and my grandma taught me a lot of Chinese before I was sent to public school and started my English learning. Since I am a 2nd generation kid and my parents moved here to the US, for a better life...now, I wish my parents (and myself) made me and my siblings to spend more time on learning and practice Cantonese. Now these day, I find it's really hard to find Chinese people who speak Cantonese around my area or finding Chinese dramas that have Cantonese dub instead of Mandarin dub that I can listen to with/without subtitle. But I will do what I can to improve and keep Cantonese in my system. You guys should talk and hang out with XiaomaNYC - either do a collaboration on something or doing a simple video about learning the language. I think it will be fun to watch between the 3 of you guys vs Xiaoma - like which one is more superior in languages, able to have a conversation with each other in Chinese or play a game but in Chinese. Anyway, I always enjoy watching and looking forward to videos from you guys. They are either funny, something that I can related to, or can be educational that I didn't know about before. Keep it up! Stay safe and healthy during the pandemic.

I aspire to achieve that level of fluency in Mandarin. My native language is Cantonese even though my parents are not from HK or Macau. They're from a small city in Guangdong province called Kaiping. So their native language is called 開平話. In school they learned and used Mandarin but at home, they spoke 開平話. They were also fans of Cantonese songs and famous HK singers (Jacky Cheung, Sandy Lam, Aaron Kwok, Andy Lau, Leon Lai, etc etc.) and they spoke Cantonese with other people because it was Guangdong province. My great grandmother (my maternal grandmother's mom) also mostly spoke Cantonese but she married my great-grandfather who mostly spoke 開平話. So my mom's side of the family are semi-fluent in Cantonese. After my parents immigrated to Canada, they realized a lot of people Chinese people here in Canada at the time spoke Cantonese so they used it more frequently. When they were choosing which language for my sister and I to learn at Chinese school, it was an obvious choice to choose Cantonese. (Because more people spoke it and both my grandparents and parents could help us on homework/assignments and dictation) After awhile, the amount of Mandarin speaking people increased in my city so now I kind of want to learn Mandarin. My parents exposed me to Mandarin songs and tv shows with Chinese subtitles since I was young so I kind of understand Mandarin (if it's spoken relatively slowly and if there's no slang involved lol). My speaking level of Mandarin is not the best. So I wanna improve that. I took beginner level Mandarin in my last year of highschool. Unfortunately the pandemic happened so I couldn't be there for half the year. So if I want to learn Mandarin now, I have to spend money for lessons because I graduated highschool. Saturday day school is free in Canada (at least in my city) Loved the video btw

I'm pretty much in the exact opposite situation as you haha. I grew up speaking Mandarin at home, and was kind of exposed to Cantonese growing up (parents are from Guangxi and went to school in Guangzhou) but have been trying to get better at it for some time now. But yeah it's so cool that you're looking to learn! Not sure about your level but since you have some background I'm sure there are resources out there that are more accessible (for me, I started watching Cantonese KZbinrs and listening to Cantonese podcasts).

I've been learning Cantonese over lockdown since the beginning of the year. Last weekend we decided to finally take a chance to go out to eat Dimsum for a bday celebration. When the waitress came over to the table I said 唔該可唔可以俾啲豉油我? and she gave a little startled-like jump and then said 你嚇親我!你啲廣東話咁醒!It seemed genuine. I know I have a long way to go but I was proud of that moment. XD..
