I've dated plenty of Spanish speaking or Asian speaking girls, and I always try to learn the language. But if you're not using it on a daily basis, you forget it. I can still understand some Spanish, especially if written...but my Mandarin and Tagalog/bisaya is non-existent.

The two guys from the great ADVChina channel both lived in China over 10 years and speak fluent mandarin (and a bit of Cantonese). One is American, one is South African and both have Chinese wives. Once they went to Chinatown in Los Angeles to find some authentic food, and everywhere they went they heard people on the street saying in Mandarin: "What are these foreigners doing here?" Now these are Chinese immigrants and ex-pats in the US calling a guy born in New York a "foreigner." Could you imagine Americans & Brits living in something EnglishTown in the heart of Beijing and seeing locals walking through and having the audacity to ask loudly "What are all these Chinese doing here?"

I think that Cantonese is one of my favorite sounding languages. Kim Chan was probably my favorite Chinese actor of all time (Fifth Element, KungFu: The Legend Continues) and that accent just reminds me of my childhood and all the chefs at our local small-town Chinese restaurants. To this day, the most authentic restaurants in my area, in a larger city now, have Cantonese being spoken in the back.

Xiaoma - She-ow-ma. The "NYC" part is... well fairly self-explanitory. This guy and Laushu505000 (rip) inspired me to learn Mandarin. So I started. We moved to Iowa, and I wanted to try and find places to learn and practice/use my skills. Found a local restaurant called China Moon, owned by a husband and wife. They would both speak Mandarin, and I would try and practice with the owner. Turns out, he's Vietnamese, and she's Chinese!! He said Vietnamese was easier to learn, so I started learning Vietnamese now, too lol. It's not easy. It's equally difficult, but I appreciate his attitude lol! In getting to know him, he told me that came to America in '84 with being able to speak a few words, but every day he would come home and both read AND write from the dictionary for 2 hours. He said that even to this day, he still gets nervous speaking English with me and others. That kind of put things in perspective, and now learning languages has a bit more meaning to me (more than it already had before).

New York China town USED to be all Cantonese speakers (people from Hong Kong and surrounding areas). Now, like other China towns in the USA, people from Mainland China have become more of a presence. They speak a MUCH different dialect from Cantonese, mutually unintelligible from Cantonese. (Mandarin). Shya-Shya (Xie-Xie) is "Thank you" in Mandarin. Not sure about "Xio-Mei", (I didn't hear it), but the words could be translated as "Little Pretty one". In the USA, Chinese waiters and waitresses are considered to be quite rude. But after living in Asia for many years, I soon found out that that "rudeness", in Asian restaurants, is "de rigueur". I remember eating in an Asian restaurant and I asked for a "little more sauce" (which they serve in those TINY concave bowls). The waitress gave me a dirty look and said: "Why do you eat so much sauce?!!!!"

I think what makes America people react especially to this guy speaking Chinese is most Americans aren't exposured that much to foreign languages.
