Yeah DirectX 9 and older was the wild west, while it was of tremendous help in getting games to work with a multitude of graphics cards... many *many* games would violate the DirectX API specifications and rely on undefined behaviours. Microsoft started clamping down on this behaviour from developers when they introduced DirectX 10. This is why old games can render weirdly despite there being backwards compatibility, the backwards compatibility is primarily built around official API specs and then companies like Nvidia and AMD have to employ game specific tweaks in their graphics drivers to get them looking correctly, and if such tweaks are missing for your favourite game you may need to rely on other solutions like DXVK, DGVoodoo2 etc. Afaik Nvidia has the more robust backwards compatibility with old games without relying on 3rd party stuff like DXVK.

On another note, throwing PBR on classic games fundamentally changes the style they have, it's a nice new toy by Nvidia but I personally think it presents the risk of people overdoing it by just thinking that throwing ray tracing and PBR on classic games with some 4K textures is all Gucci. Most classic games are carefully hand painted with specific art styles in mind. Best example is your thumbnail, the moon and earth look nice but the temple has gone too soft and lost it's color and detail.

Everything has the potential to be misused and yeah what you described will happen a lot but this isn't the first tool that's ever done this. I've been actively using ReShade to change the look of my games and while it's certainly not as in-depth as remix is, it presents the same issue that you outlined. People just throw the same filters at it and call it a day and it almost never works, but the presets that do take the time to carefully adjust it to the game it is meant for work wonders in improving the visuals. It just needs to be done right, that's all Stop whining about Pathtracing (since that's what RTX remix uses) & PBR materials, they're OBJECTIVELY better than their older counterparts (rasterized lighting and flat materials) "but but... muh style change" Then don't play it. Go stick with your 30 year old graphics. Nothing wrong with that. I have 30 consoles ranging all the way from 1985 to now and play older games regularly. @StormKnight16 ай бұрын
@@blinkachu5275 PBR introducing realistic light reactions is exactly the problem, hand painted games with sprite particle effects have specific design philosophies down to the very brush strokes of the artists who shaded everything. All PBR does is throw up a soup of lights and reflections on everything and in a lot of cases this completely ruins the entire look of the game, there will be some games where it works well by default but not much, nor does it excuse it's method to be used in all possible cases.

Manual replacement of textures and models looks great but boy does that generative AI texture upscaling system produce absolute garbage for most of the pre-HL2 stuff shown here. The wood at 1:35, the stone at 1:40, and (particularly noticeable) the train textures at 1:52 all look cartoonish and warped, with strangely plastic looking specular highlights. I don't agree they're very close or require minor touch ups; a lot are outright bad and the salvageable stuff would require a fair bit of work to get it to match the original art style properly. My advice to anyone using Remix? Don't use the upscaler at all. If you can't manage that, use them as stand-ins only or, at the very least, check and edit the results. I do worry that we're going to see a whole lot of low effort remaster mods as a result of this: no work to actually redo the textures, just running everything through the upscaler to 4K and sticking them directly in the game with no oversight.

does this work with any classic game? like KOTOR?
@Josh800n6 ай бұрын
It works best with DirectX game, DX 7 - 9. DX9C very rarely will work because it has lots of shaders which will make remix incompatible. KOTOR uses OpenGL so Remix requires a wrapper to convert it and the only one functioning has bugs for this game. So maybe in the future when wrappers improve
@carlthelongshoreman19796 ай бұрын

Wont this allow people to replace textures/models in multiplayer games, completely bypassing anti-cheat due to having a direct hook to your GPU? Very cool tech but I hope it doesn't lead to a whole new anti-cheat arms race. Edit: some kind people have informed me that this isn't an issue for most games post-2005
@Larry_Owlmann6 ай бұрын
My thoughts too. Turn all foliage or other bullet penetrate objects invisible or shrink the models till they’re effectively non existent and then paint all enemy player models neon yellow with bright red heads. Won’t be as effective as aimbotting but probably a lot easier/safer to implement and waaaaaaaaaay harder to detect as all it’s doing is altering a frame the game sends it to render.
@TheDeeGeeNL6 ай бұрын
Don't worry 99% of the games past 2005 will not work with Remix due to not having a Fixed Function Pipeline.
@jayceneal52736 ай бұрын
No, it uses a dll to hook in which is the first thing an anti cheat detects. And it won't work on anything from 2004/5 onwards anyway so

as a game dev this is so pure ass. all it does is automatically destroy purposeful choices when it comes to artistic vision with "ReALiSm" realism != fun
@senhor68636 ай бұрын
I don't think it does it with realism for the sake of it, is just that the AI tools are trained with PBR and photo textures, which for modders is more convenient than hand making everything, and eventhough im not a fan of it either, the freedom to do everything manually is still there
@unfa005 ай бұрын
Enviro/tech art here - yes, it is ass, unless you take the OG assets and painstakingly create PBR replacements for the old textures. Then it might work maybe. But art direction goes out the window anyway. I think this is really just a gimmick to sell RTX cards.

@jayceneal52736 ай бұрын
The problem is there aren't any source ports that are fixed function (or at least none that work with rtx remix). That being said, we do have the source code, so you could easily make a rtx remix compatible source port if you have the know how

@@jayceneal5273 I was thinking more in terms of the official, original executables from the re-releases, like the quake.exe and q2.exe files that get downloaded when you install the re-releases... surely those would retain their original rendering pipelines, and thus be compatible with RTX Remix?

i am stoked to PLAY stuff like this. I dont know how to develop crap. i still dont know what a shader is and why some unoptimized games stutter due to shader compilation. I guess some people might be stoked to use this tool. But so far so, not so much has been released using RTX remix.
@Hwyadylaw6 ай бұрын
A shader (shader program) is a program that runs on your GPU. Usually it draws graphics, but can also make use of the unique strengths of graphics hardware for other calculations. Shader compilation is done to turn shader code from a common format into one compatible with, and optimised for your particular hardware and drivers. It's often done whenever a shader is loaded, so if an object in the game is loaded in that uses a new shader, it has to compile the shader code on-the-fly, which can cause the game to freeze or slow down.
