Episode 2 of Season 3 of The Chosen may be one of my favorite of the entire series. There are so many amazing moments that show us what it was like to be a disciple of Jesus.
We get a glimpse into their fears and reservations when Jesus gives them a task that they feel they’re not ready for.
We witness the cost and toll this takes on them and their families.
And all of it is written in this beautiful way that allows us to put ourselves in their shoes.
But there also may be some things in this episode that you missed,
...like why Matthew’s position as a tax collector caused him to be disowned by his family, and why it would be so incredible to see it restored,
…or why there is such awkwardness surrounding Thomas’s desire to propose to Rama, and what that process would actually look like,
…or why a Roman soldier would want to partner with Simon against the Zealots
…or why Jesus’ decision to send out his disciples to heal and proclaim the Kingdom is so ironic and count-cultural.
In this video, I want to share with you details that will help all of these things to make more sense, and so much more.
And so, if you’re interested in diving deeper beyond the episode, and if you enjoy learning biblical and historical details that will not only change the way you see the episode, but help you to see the Bible with an entirely new set of eyes, then join me for this episode of The Chosen Explained.

As a devout Catholic,I must confess that my knowledge of the Bible is meager at best. I am learning so very much watching your vlogs/teachings and I am so very grateful. Every single one has enriched my faith. Also learning so much about what life was like at the time of Jesus on earth when He came to save us from sin. How wonderful it would be if today people would know that and follow Him.

You realize as a Catholic, if you go to mass and pay attention to the OT-1st and NT-2nd readings and gospel, the bible is read through every 2 years 80% New Testament and 50% Old Testament.

There were two poignant moments in the first 2 episodes for me - Matthew and Little James (avoiding spoilers). Tearing up as I type this. Yes that scene where Jesus sends the disciples 2 by 2 is also one of my favorites! I cried too thinking about how scary it must have been to be told to do this with nothing but the clothes on your back. Now I really understand why Jesus did this! I do wish I could've been there with Jesus too! Thanks for all of the insightful information about the societal things for the Jewish community and the Roman's. So interesting, and I always wondered why tax collectors were hated that much.

I really enjoy and am challenged by your well researched explanations Brandon. I love the fact that the Chosen isn’t just retelling christians favorite moments in the gospels, but really digging into passages that are often skipped over en route to the “good stuff” we all love and have heard over and over (the miracles etc). I think this sending out of the Twelve two by two would be an example of this, and I love how you highlighted that in this episode. Even before His crucifixion, burial & resurrection, the Twelve are given His authority to do Miracles - a foreshadowing of life in The Spirit! Which the Chosen alluded to in episode 1 of season 2 (right before the Modeh Ani - my favorite episode so far).

@@ceciliaann5243 Hello! Some additional thoughts: Father wanted family (Grace) with Israel as their Father. Israel wanted a king, judge (Law) like they had with Pharaoh in Egypt. So Father gave them what THEY wanted -law. Law was given to reveal His Son/family in it. Instead they/priests/Sanhedrin turned it into performance and obedience (self effort) “doings” that perpetuated separation thinking in order to control people/purposes and $$$. Jesus Christ completed, fulfilled the Old Covenant (bc self effort/performance and obedience can not do that), thereby setting people free from themselves/law. Only Father can make AND keep covenant. Love and blessings!

Thank you Brandon for sharing some Jewish cultural insight that will help us understand the Gospels better. I know this isn't related much to the video, but I must say when you differentiate and define the Roman characters in the Chosen and their status, it just confirmed my realization that Gaius is most certainly the "Roman Centurion" that Jesus saves in the Gospels. In Season 3, you can see him remembering how Matthew dropped everything the Romans gave him as a tax collector to become a disciple of Jesus, and started to come to possible belief himself. He's starting to protect Jesus's ministry a little bit by giving "lower ranking centurions" softer commands that looks like he's still carrying out the Roman mission but doesnt affect the people as much...so he isn't found out. You know what I mean? Once I realized this, it blew my mind!

I knew/know different countries have different cultures than the US, & cultures are different now than when Jesus was here. Thank you for this tidbit of history. I've seen so many movies/shows about Jesus, Mosas etc, The Chosen has shown these people actually lived, they were real!!!

You can experience exactly what Jesus was asking of his Apostles in depending COMPLETELY on God by having nothing - work in a homeless shelter that is Christ oriented - depending only on what they can gather food and money wise from friends of their ministry. It is the most spiritually revealing - to see how God provides for those who live by Faith, who depend on Him totally for their daily needs: food, water, shelter, companionship, order, cleanliness. Find a shelter like Dorothy Day's and Peter Morin's philosophy of "Little By Little" - Catholic Worker Shelter or Farm - they are ALWAYS seeking volunteers to come and see how they live and minister to the least of the least. Grace of God upon you, Brandon. There are also other Christian based shelters also - it's just my experience with Catholic Worker that has me provide them as a good source.

I would love a transcript of this (and I did take notes, but it went too fast!) so I can make notes in my Bible for teaching. I was kicked out of the Catholic church--asked not to come back to Madonna Academy because I challenged them on why they changed the Ten Commandments and changed the Sabbath from the seventh day to the first day. (See Rev Peter Geiermann's "The Convert's Catechism of Catholic Doctrine" for evidence of this) Was told I was a child and not a priest and therefore could not discern the Scriptures properly. I didn't buy it and shook the dust from my sandals, so to speak, to find a Sabbath keeping Christian church that believed "sola Scriptura." But I welcome historical/cultural understanding and enjoy your teachings.

You’re right. God set aside the Sabbath day to worship. It is the day God ordained for us to keep separate and to worship Him. Early Christians called Sunday, the Lord’s Day. I am a Catholic too, but ended up going to Bible Academy and later to Bible College for a BA in Religious Education. It was Emperor Constantine that allowed the early Christians to worship on Sunday. After they came out of the catacombs, they were still persecuted albeit not as badly. Constantine took an interest, I understand, both politically and spiritually in Christianity. So, he gave them a day to worship the way they wanted: on Sunday, which is named after the Sun god, Rah. God never changed the rules. I worship on Saturday, the Sabbath, and have been going to Mass a lot lately - until I ran into another problem with the Catholic Church - the problem that they have with divorced parties taking an active part in the church life. I guess I can continue to go there, warm a pew, give my money - but I am not good enough to participate any more, even though I was told that I was right to leave my husband. I enjoy worshipping with the Jews on Saturday by listening to Rabbis sometimes. There are a lot of good things on KZbin for Messianic Jews (Jews who believe in Christ) to watch on Saturday to worship. I have just about had it with the Catholic Church. I love the Mass and the deep symbolism, but I am just not getting enough gospel truth or rich sermons.

Thank you for these lessons. I often got confused while reading the Bible. Language has changed so much over time that I often didn't make the connection. ❤ Thank you for helping me understand the Bible. I did pick up other translations from a local thrift store, and that has helped to. I feel like a whole new world has opened.

I have watched many of your messages on KZbin, especially the deeper aspects of details related to The Chosen, I love the Bible and Jesus is my constant companion. The Chosen has been a great way to introduce friends and aquaintances to Jesus, and your added details are enlightening and insightful. Some time ago I came upon your KZbin about the Sabbath and it has been on my mind ever since. You being a thorough student of the Bible I would like to encourage you to do a deeper study of the subject of the Sabbath. The Sabbath predates the Jews by 2000 years, and it will be observed in the New Earth. Secondly, you rather losely mention the change from Sabbath to Sunday observance in the early part of the Christian era. There is so much more to God's plan for the Sabbath and I encourage you to dig everything from the Bible with a Sola Scriptura attitude.k Thank you for your contribution to truth and faith. Ulla.

I want to say thank you for doing this all of these videos. When I was a kid I always knew there was far more going on with the Bible than what I was being taught. The people that were in the churches that I went to were teaching it more literal reading it from the Bible exactly as the words said. In fact, they even said an imagination is evil. It's a sin and inside of the devil and I would be chastised chewed out talk down to for asking questions that they didn't have answers for to give a couple of examples. One of the things that the preachers like to or ministers like to constantly throw at us and preach at us and teach us as they would put. It was that it was impossible for you to have money and get to heaven most of the time it was. You should give it to the church. You should only have just enough to pay your bills and get through to the next paycheck and that's it. Anything beyond that is a sin and they would constantly throw at us that Jesus even says this in scripture and what they're talking about when you probably already know where I'm going is that he said that it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle than it was for a rich man to get into heaven and they would literally hold up a sewing needle and say that is impossible for a camel to get through that. So it is impossible for anyone who has money to get into heaven. Many years later I learned through just history reading and doing some research on some just city walls and sieges and conflicts and wars that happened in history. Just history reading and that there is a door on the main gate that is called the eye of the needle. It is a small door. It allows for no more than two people to get through it at any any two soldiers at to get through it at any point and during times of danger they would close the main gates and this would be how you'd get in and out and they would have to pass camels through this and it was very difficult and they called that threading the eye of the needle. Once I heard that I knew exactly what Jesus was talking about. I mean not totally but I knew what he was talking about. The camel passing through the eye of a needle. The rest of it. I'm still understanding and finding understanding but I knew what he was talking about that it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye needle. What he what? He was talking about the act of the camel and then I knew wasn't impossible but it was very difficult they've been other things that I've had things that are talking about and I've had to learn what these things really meant in the process I learned growing up as a young adult. My twenties that you cannot read any book and it doesn't matter what book any story, anything without understanding the context in which it was written. You cannot apply today's meaning to yesterday's understanding and that's what I experienced in when I was a kid. Was people applying today's meaning to yesterday's understanding not knowing what any of this was and I don't fault a lot of them for for that this is a lot of them was taught that some of them may have been having ulterior motives, but I think most of them was just read regurgitating what they had been taught rehashing it retelling it and in the end it wasn't correct and when I was a kid you didn't have the internet history books was not something that people really read. They weren't really out there and in the area and the churches that I was subject to you didn't question the Bible if it wasn't in the Bible. It was an important enough for you to read and if it wasn't important enough for you to read, you didn't read it and I guess that's why my grandmother had a sixth grade education and my uncle had a second grade education. My grandfather. I don't know what his education was but it was higher than my grandmother's but the point is is they didn't consider that important so they didn't finish school. They went to school to appoint to where they understood how the world worked in their area, their little part of the world and that was the end of it. Now with that being said, my uncle could add and subtract faster than people could add it and subtract on a calculator and he can do it in his head. He could outspell most people. My grandmother would have to use a piece of paper she could add and subtract really well. She could spell really well and she wrote down everything when she passed we found letters that she wrote to people telling her telling them things these people. She never mailed the letters probably because she either didn't know where they lived or they had passed and she was still writing letters to them because she was in her way talking to them so they had a you know they were educated well. But the point I'm trying to say is that you didn't question and if somebody decided stood up and said I'm a minister. You didn't question their motives, their ideas. And if you didn't like their method of being a minister, you didn't say anything I'm having to break through a lot of those problems that I learned as a kid and I'm trying to find truths and history and understanding and what things meant today and through people like you. I'm finding that. Thank you

I received edification from your words this morning. Discipleship doesn’t seem to preach very well from today’s pulpit, because these sermons don’t pay well. “I put my money in the collection plate to pay a professional to say ‘Jesus’ to the lost, or feed the hungry with our church’s food pantry. So I should be excused from doing that myself. And not only does the church get my money, but you mean that I must also do what I’m paying others to do?!? I’ll just take my money elsewhere then!” This seems to be the attitude of many of today’s weekly attenders. I left that weekly ritual about 12 years ago, seeking Christians who live and worship God organically, not constrained by a scripted liturgy controlled by a man or small group of men. Churches today function more like a business. You can measure their faith by how much is brought in each week. Consequently, the elders function more like a Board of Trustees. The preacher functions more like a CEO, the interface between the elders and the congregation. And the congregation functions more like weekly investors who demand some kind of return for their investment, e.g., comfortable seating and climate controlled system, multi-media system, well-maintained building and grounds, etc. This picture flies in the face of the beautiful picture we find in the New Testament. Not meaning to denigrate, but it’s hard for me to turn a blind eye to this distorted picture of Christ’s bride. I think He wants her back the way He intended.

I have trust issues. I am not on my own, as everyone else is, I too have family and other people to consider. I cannot drop everything and chart out into a life of ministry. I need to learn to be a ministry for God, for Jesus' might, mercy, and Grace right where I live- among the people who are in my life. Be the light, right where you are. Sometimes that's the hardest thing to do. Be a faithful, Christian right where you are- in your own family! Your own community! Be the example! Are they seeing Christ in you? If not, fix that. I am not always a nice person. I need to fix that and stop being mean and rude, and in any way unkind. Please pray for me.

I really appreciate your views and information. Ever since I started watching the Chosen I’ve been asking myself if I am truly following and making His kingdom my priority. The scene at the fountain with Nicodemus hiding behind the wall just tore me up, because I feel like that’s me, wanting to follow but held back by family, lifestyle, fear. These first two episodes put even sharper examples of the obedience, forgiveness, humility, and courage required to follow Jesus, and I’m grateful for your work bringing to light the depth of the lessons to be learned here. Thanks so much!
