this helped me tremendously over the past year just wanted to put it hear so that someone else can benefit Here is a list of things that are not doing the thing. “Preparing to do the thing isn't doing the thing. Scheduling time to do the thing isn't doing the thing. Making a to-do list for the thing isn't doing the thing. Telling people you're going to do the thing isn't doing the thing. Messaging friends who may or may not be doing the thing isn't doing the thing. Writing a banger tweet about how you're going to do the thing isn't doing the thing. Hating on yourself for not doing the thing isn't doing the thing. Hating on other people who have done the thing isn't doing the thing. Hating on the obstacles in the way of doing the thing isn't doing the thing. Fantasising about all of the adoration you'll receive once you do the thing isn't doing the thing. Thanks for the video man. Update! He took it so well, he said he loves my name, he was so happy when I said I wanted his middle name, he was like "did you really think I wouldn't be accepting?" All shocked lol he said he always kinda knew and he was so so supportive and he called me his son and that broke me and I hugged him while crying and he said he was so proud of me for telling him and we went to his house and he told his gf and we celebrated and opened Christmas gifts this is the best way it could've gone I'm so happy

This is kind of funny because it's kind of similar to dua in Islam, or maybe just praying in general. Just the concept of asking for everything that you want, it also makes you realize what you want in the first place.

If you have ADHD this might not work as you'll get a dopamine boost from writing it down and then won't feel the need to do the hard work for the dopamine boost of achieving the thing.
@Catsgirl323 сағат бұрын
So gameify it! I really recommend making these kinds of things into little games. For example, my to-do list is a quests-list instead. For each quest I complete I do damage to a boss I am fighting. 40 or so quests done and I beat the boss, which means I get to reward myself by buying something small that sparks joy. It helps me plan out impulse-buys better and it can be a good motivator to do tasks. For the tool in the video I guess you could make it into an 'adventure' too. Reaching the goal is the final boss. All the steps you need to take to reach it are quests. Every time you fulfill one of those you proceed further in the adventure. Every few quests you get a reward. Rewards on the long-term do not work for adhders, so chop it up into manageable stuff to keep the dopamine boosts going. It may lose its spark but then you can remake it into a different game. Reward yourself for the steps, not the goal (though of course reaching the final goal warrants a big additional reward too, not just the dopamine from reaching the goal cause we all know that's short-lived lmao). Hope that helps :D

i struggle with a lot of overthinking lol, and found this really helps on a micro scale as well! i want to do the laundry. instead of mulling it over and being anxious about it, i put it on paper. i gets it out there, helps me remember, and helps me move on with other things knowing that reminder is there and i’ll come back to it. i use a whiteboard in my room and a memo pad next to my bed for all sorts of these things- chores i gotta do, story ideas, etc. it’s helped alot for the small stuff, and i’ll def be implementing it for the big stuff too!
@Catsgirl323 сағат бұрын
I don't know if you already do this but I personally have found that sorting my to-do lists on urgency really helps to quiet down the overthinking a bit. Of course everything seems important but being strict and dividing it up into things that must be done today or the world starts burning and things that should be done before next week or within a month etc. can end up providing some peace of mind! :)

For this to work, you need to have goals in your head. The changes I want, I can’t make myself. And writing it down isn’t much of a tool if I still don’t know what to do after that.

One of the things to consider is uncertainty. There is no way to know a path will bring you where you want after you embark.
@doctorchrisg13 күн бұрын
That indeed makes it difficult, but more rewarding? For me anyway
@Catsgirl323 сағат бұрын
Maybe enjoying the journey rather than the end point can help with that? Of course it's important to reach big end goals, but I find it helps much more to celebrate each step I take towards them. I'll be proud to reach the goal but I'm already proud of taking each step and even if I do not reach the end goal for whatever reason I'll have made that progress and done things I'm proud of! I personally get really demotivated when big plans do not work out, so focussing on the process is so much more motivating and takes away a lot of uncertainty (in my experience, though that is different for everyone and every situation ofc).

I personally also never really had big goals or ambitions. I never really knew what kind of job I wanted to do and was just doing what I thought I should be doing. Until two years ago I finally ran into something that actually sparked my interest! Not as intensely as people on the internet say it should be like, which btw is often sensationalist and often does not reflect real life properly. But there was a tiny spark. So hear me out I have advice for you! Last year I decided to just kinda lean into that spark and investigate if that field of work would actually be something I could find joy in. Now mind you, it was something very different from what I had pursued for the 4 years prior to it, which was something I believed I wanted for 5 more years before that. So it was SCARY and new. Now I'm so happy to say that the spark turned out to still be there! And I started to flesh out my idea of what that future prospect could be like. Not a 10-year plan, cause like 70% of people don't do the job they are educated for after 5 years or so (idk the actual stats). But for at least a year after graduating, maybe 3, but definitely not more than 5. In fact, I focussed on this year alone. In which I happen to barely engage in that work field. Then this year I started to think about next year, as I need to figure out what I will write my thesis on. And I have decided to do it in that area that sparks joy rather than the high-profile area I gaslit myself into thinking I wanted. Now mind you, it took me 22 years to find that ambition, I am now 23. I never had an ambition like the people on the internet and the people around me irl all seem to have. I'll tell you a secret: Nobody knows wtf they are doing. And I'm 99% sure most, if not all, people who seem to have big shiny ambitions are actually not experiencing it all that shiny either. I can get really excited talking about my new-found ambition, but outside of that it is almost as mundane as everything else in adult life. Not that that is a bad thing per say, but it puts things into perspective. The sparks are still nice but it's not like a glowing paradise on the horizon lmao (thank goodness that'd be an overwhelming pressure). Don't pressure yourself to make big shiny sparkly long-term goals. You'll just get overwhelmed or demotivated, let them go, and then feel bad about not achieving them. Super unproductive imo! ;p Focus on the short term. At most 3 years but if you struggle to make goals keep it at a maximum of half a year. My only year-spanning new years resolution is that I end the year feeling better than how I start the year (read: literally just my overall mood on new year's eve itself). Sorry about the long comment, I just want to recommend one last thing: Keep a gratitude and pride journal. Every day at the end of the day take a short moment of like a minute or two and write down: 2 things that happened that day that you are grateful for (seeing a nice sunset, laughing with a friend, watching a silly video, etc.) AND 2 things that you did that day that you are proud of yourself for (reading for an hour to calm your mind, getting groceries even though you felt tired, sending that scary email, etc.). I promise you it will do two things: You will slowly learn what the things are that you value in life, which you can use to form goals (spend more time with friends, travel more, etc. keep it small!!). And you will start to notice that you are in fact already working on goals without realising it (take better care of yourself by resting more, overcoming hurdles, etc.). Reward yourself on the short term, not the long term. Human brains lose interest REAL fast if a goal takes years to achieve. Be gentle to yourself, have fun discovering what you want in life and remember that your happiness is the most important thing - if pursuing big goals doesn't work for you there's tons of different and more fun ways to get through life :)
