It always surprises me when two professional players go into an opening line they clearly both know by heart, then as soon as one player deviates from the line... the game goes sideways immediately for one player and ends before move 30. I wonder if some players these days rely too much on their memorization of opening lines, rather than studying midgame positions to deepen their understanding. The midgame is where chess is actually played -- the openings are memorized, and the endgame sequences are memorized. Only the midgame moves away from memory and toward creativity. Black was against a fearsome opponent here though.

Theori Are you channeling the ghost of Bobby Fischer? You are of course right, but then so was Bobby. So what this implies, in order for both of you to be right at very different times, is that the problem first pointed out by Fisher is being exacerbated by the resource-intensive game that chess has become. Back in Bobby's day only the Russians had those kind of resources, but now everybody has them, and they are as inexpensive as a couple of good apps.
@james64ibm5 жыл бұрын
You have to remember that Kashlinskaya only has a rating of 2487, which means that there are 400 Elo points worth of error in her game compared to a Magnus Carlsen which is seemingly undedeatable by a human in classic time format simply by making not enough errors to be beaten, even against an opponent that plays perfect by human standards. However, if you're rated considerably lower, your game has noticeable flaws - you either don't know all there is to know about openings, you have deficits attacking or defending in the middle game, your endgame technique is lacking, you blunder occasionally, or you have some very good and some very bad days. But yeah, since there are lots of engine lines around every professional chess player seemingly spends a lot of time memorizing openings - but then again, middlegames are considerably harder to learn and play since you have to shape the character of the game and there are very few standard techniques that always work. That being said, I do often see GMs which also skipped a few endgame lessons.
@josephdestaubin74265 жыл бұрын
Is the middle game (monetarily define here as the part that no one has memorized), getting shorter?

I think even if there is such a fancy mating net, it would be wiser to just take the queen and win the game easily. In a live commentary Alexander Grischuk once said something like this: "In Russia we learn from the very beginning that if you have the choice between being a rook up and giving mate in seven moves, then take the rook." I mean, why taking the risk to miss something and blunder the game if you will have a certain win?

Hmm solid approach. Style points can be very sought after though.

É o que acontece quando seu oponente desenvolve suas peças e você não. Seu oponente pode sacrificar uma peça menor por alguns peões, criando fraquezas e ainda ter poder de ataque suficiente para o xeque-mate.

After seeing this opening in so many games recently, I'm curious about something. Why is it that seemingly everybody transposes into the Queen's Gambit Declined via 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 d5, rather than just opening 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 and then playing the knights out on the third move? Obviously both lines end in the same position, but is there a reason why one move order is seemingly always used over the other?
