The A and W railroad tracks were right next to the river behind those grain silos, and serviced several manufacturing companies located further down the river as well. One of those businesses was the Olsonite company, at one time the worlds largest maker of toilet seats. Algoma is a great little town that is really coming back to life.

Algoma is awesome! We were just there this past Tuesday as we tour Door County for light houses. Get some fishing in!

I lived in Northeast Wisconsin during the Oughties, and I frequently visited and absolutely loved Algoma, and nearby Kewaunee as well. These two towns don’t get the attention they deserve because they are not part of Door County, but the upside of that is they are a lot less crowded than that hugely popular area. You will feel that you have made a nice discovery!

Back in my drinking days, I would go to von Stiehl winery and buy a whole case of wine once a year. 😊 Of course, the wine was a lot cheaper then!

Back in the 1980s my parents went to the von Stiehl Winery. At that time the wine bottles would have casting (for the old fashioned casts on broken bones) material around them because according to my mother, Dr. von Stiehl was an orthopedic doctor. Never have been there so not sure of the history, but the wine bottles were really cool. I wish we’d have saved one!

In grade school we did a type of art project where we put tape over an old soda bottle and then painted it. I imagine it was imitation art of the old wine bottles that you speak of.

I see that the newest one is showing the Town Sign in the thumbnail (White Lake) ... this is more helpful for watching or re-watching than a title that only says "forgotten town".

I'm sure you know, Sally, that Sturgeon Bay is NOT the beginning of Door County (entering from the south) but is about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way into the county. Sturgeon Bay and north is generally of more interest to tourists, but the entire county including the largely rural southern part is also beloved by many.

Someway or another, the Algoma Central Railway is tied to Algoma Wisconsin. That is all in the past.

Outsiders don’t realize how big a water State Wisconsin is. They just think of farmers and cheese and frozen tundra. But, Lake Michigan is the entire eastern side, Lake Superior borders the north western border, and the Saint Croix and Mississippi Rivers border the western side. Then, all the lakes and rivers within. I’d like to see the Western 2/3 Counties of the UP vote to join Wisconsin too. Help rectify the injustice of DC giving away the UP to Michigan to settle a dispute between Michigan and Ohio that had nothing to do with Wisconsin! .

Use to go to the Ben Franklin’s in Englewood in Independence, MO. It had wooden floors that squeaked and groaned, when you walked around in the store. Plus, they put linseed oil on the floor now and then and that is what you smelled when you came into the store.
