Worried peeps here are confusing lime (aka citric acid) with lime (aka Natural Hydraulic Lime which is made from Limestone (aka Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) to become Calcium Hydroxide (CaOH2)) which is alkaline, and thus caustic, and more likely to do respiratory damage through inhilation when it's dry. To be honest, looking the conditions, I'd be more worried about heat stress mixed with a tummy bug. Be like a local - work early morning and late afternoon, wear a wide brimmed hat, don't work in the middle of the day - have a siesta - and drink heaps of fluids. Stay safe folks.

Hi Theo, a small tip on cement mixer cleaning while keeping the amount of water down is to throw in a couple of shovels of gravel when cleaning. This gets the inside really clean and only needs a little bit of water. Before retirement I work approx 40 years in construction/maintenance and this is the method we used. Best of luck with the rest of the renovation and I hope you and Bea will be feeling well quickly. John

@scrumpyman513 жыл бұрын
Hi Janice. That sounds a bit radical as a good worker should never let the equipment get to that level of contamination. I hate to think of what the mixer drum looks like after bouncing a brick inside it. I do know of heavy dury industrial mixers that could take it, but the average mixers sold at local supply stores would more than likely end up with lots of bumps and dents. Even though the mixers look robust, you have to be careful not to dent the side to the point where it comes loose from the crown gear that is the main drive from the motor.

Two things guys: the lime is absorbed through any exposed skin as well, so perhaps long pants and sleeves? It's not just the inhaled dust. Also, I'm thinking that Fernando would be sick as well if it was the lime, he is a mammal after all. Does he have any symptoms? Vomiting at both ends?! If not, I think it's possible you have either a stomach flu, which can last a week, OR a parasite, from food or water. Consider all the possibilities! Feel better soon, hugs from Canada. As a diagnostic tool, perhaps you can stop liming for three days or so, and see if you feel any better. Then restart the project, and if you get sick again? It was definitely the lime.

lime is not a skin absorbed toxin. It's simply caustic due to it's high alkalinity. The main danger being painless alkali burns which often become full thickness by the time you notice. The main way this happens is if wet free lime is absorbed onto clothing and then holds against the skin for a few hours. It's exactly the same as cement burn. The worst place to get lime is in the eyes. Breathing the powder while mixing is also clearly going to be irritant. Therefore the way to go is ALWAYS goggles, never become complacent. And marigolds rather than fabric gloves. A little bit in your arm or leg is unlikely to cause problems if it's bushed off so shorts and t-shirt not the worst idea. some limes are vicious - hydrated lime in partucular. Mature lime putty which is what i would use for internal is pretty forgiving (just protect the eyes and fingers!)

I think you both have salmonella poisoning, the symptoms can last well over 7 days. It could be from something you ate but could also be from the water if you are drinking a lot of it. Dehydration will also affect you if you are constantly loosing fluid so if it’s the water you keep reinfecting yourselves as you try to rehydrate. Try switching to just bottled water until the symptoms settle down. I don’t think the lime would cause the symptoms you describe but the vacuum is a great idea anyway because it is so much easier to work in a clean space. Bee and Theo you are both working hard you should both be proud of yourselves. Please keep well and also Fernando and Gingy especially if they both go in and out of the barn/house while you are plastering the walls with the Lime if it's making you ill it could possibly make them ill getting that dust on their paws and licking off etc. Hope you get better soon. Sorry to hear you've been poorly. It sounds more like food poisoning guys. In that kind of heat food spoils so fast. Activated charcoal will absorb the nasties. Hydrate constantly. Hope you fell better soon. Take care.

It is looking amazing. Hope you both are feeling better soon. My bet would be the sushi but a good mask is a must. Be careful and safe. Enjoying your journey.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING, TESS, AS A 'GOOD MASK'...DO YOUR HOMEWORK, EVEN THE C.D.C./W.H.O.GUYS HAVE SAID MASKS ARE 'USELESS'...HAVE A GREAT DAY...AND I KNEW THEY WOULD HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THAT SUSHI...I WOULD NEVER EAT 'RAW FISH'...VERY RISKY...;)

@@layna8924 This has absolutely nothing to do with the CDC or WHO you complete & utter moron. Builders & trades people have used masks for decades to protect their lungs from toxic particulates when working & Theo/Bea absolutely need "good masks" to protect themselves for this work, as does any human, especially in a closed space like the barn, unless you actually them to get properly sick & have long term health problems?? I cannot fathom how stupid & misplaced your comment is, why the hell are you even here thinking this has anything to do with virus/disease control?! You must be a witless bot that gets triggered into action by the word "mask" & has a pre written load of tripe to spew. You're not needed here, now go away

You two have become the "Jack and Jill" of many trades! I'm excited to see the interior evolve towards the vision you have stated, that vision is starting become evident as your home progresses! God speed! PS - Fernando is a little stinker. As a child we took a family vacation and had someone look after our house cat. When we got home all seemed normal, until my parents pulled back their bed covers to find a "present" square in the middle of the bed left by our cat in an apparent protest of her abandonment!

Food poisoning can take 24-48 hours before showing up. I'll put my bet on the sushi as I have never heard of any poisoning effects from either cement or lime.

Sorry to hear of the health issues you are having. You may want to ck and see if you have a situation of Lime poisoning. You have been using it a long time in this renovation. So happy you got new respirators. Keeping you both in my prayers.
