Maybe have the final boss key be hidden behind a gauntlet of five mini bosses (one for each Kong). Each Kong can go into a room and use their skills to beat each mini boss to unlock a chamber that holds the boss key.

Mine would just put the eighth key in K. ROOL'S chair. Have the 2 banana fairies behind the coins while making the DK game award both with a win.
@GatorOne-in7hk12 күн бұрын
The coins should’ve been used to unlock a final cheat, something that would make going for them actually worth it, like invincibility and boosted speed for each Kong. Would make future playthroughs FAR more bearable. Especially the races with the wretched rabbit and evil beetle. I say the battle crowns should’ve been used to get the final key instead.

If I was in the dev team and my boss told me that it would be required to get those coins, I would make it so that only one of the two coins was required. Either one, so the player had a choice. While the Diddy Cabin was the golden banana that took me the longest to get, the Nintendo coin was hell to get.

My dad said he used to play it in the arcade with my mother years ago. Naturally, when my dad seen it was in DK64 when I was a kid, he wanted to play it. Little me couldn't do hard mode so I gave it to him, optimistically expecting him to be sloppy and take a while but no kidding, he beat hard mode first try. After that me and my dad played it for hours in the mini game section of the main menu, he showed me a lot of tips and witnessed the game difficulty reset after he hit lvl75 or something like that. After that experience I never really had a problem playing this section again, my dad seasoned me to it and to this day, my dad still has the hi-score on my N64 cartridge

I think one of the worst things about the DK arcade game challenge is that unlike the normal version of the arcade game, which can be played in the bonus menu, The version in Frantic Factory forces you to do it with ONE LIFE, instead of the normal 3 lives. meaning a single mistake can take a while to get back to where you were considering you have to pull the lever every time you need to restart and then work back to where you were. Not to mention you have to beat the game a second time on a harder difficulty, still with one life, to actually get the coin. Thank god they didn't force you to go through the first loop of the game when doing the Nintendo Coin challenge. Jetpac is much easier in comparison since there are no changes to the base game, 3 lives and only needing to beat the challenge once. All you need to do is get 5k points, I just stayed on the first level grinding enemies and gathering the bonus items for the points.
@MelancholyJoker1911 күн бұрын
And collect the coin. You could get 5000 points and die before the coin comes down for you to collect it
@X2011racer11 күн бұрын
You can still get 1ups in Donkey Kong Arcade by getting a high enough score. That's easier said than done if you are not good at the game. Here's some tips: 1. Go for the items from 50M onwards. They give you bonus points. 2. Don't ignore the Hammers; if you can get a good chain going with a Hammer, you can rack up a lot of points. 3. Speedrun strategies from the NES version will not work as the obstacles move faster in the Arcade version. Don't take risks.
@LevelUpLeo11 күн бұрын
Yeah, that part really confuses me. If they left in the 3 lives, I think a lot more people would see the challenge as tough, but fair. You'd at least have time to get familiar with what mistakes you can or can't make. Getting to 75M and then dying from a fall, then getting reset completely is so depressing, I totally get the rage at that.
@superjoebros6411 күн бұрын

JetPac was alright for the most part as it was pretty forgiving to get the Rareware coin, plus you only had to do it once. As for the DK Arcade, lets just say its stuff like this why they invented Save States... They shouldn't have been made mandatory to complete the main story though, maybe give some other optional reward like playing as Krushaa in the main story mode or something. Also to this day I'll never understand why Sakurai included 75m into Smash and not the miles more iconic (and appealing looking) 25m to represent the DK Arcade game.

I think the most jarring thing about the Donkey Kong Arcade is how primitive the controls are, particularly in the context of a late '90s 3D platformer. My suggestion is to make donkey Kong also score based. The coin be score based, and completing the levels gets you the banana. Also cut out the fade in and out screen with dks slow af lever pull as well. Just have it where it automatically fades to black interacting with it again, or just offer a retry screen on failure. Even if it just keeps the one life that would be significantly better, but I'd also wish they'd just give you 3 lives for it.
@Redvox5710 күн бұрын
As a kid me and a friend would play jetpack and giggle at the electronic fart sounds the game makes and it's on of my fondest dk64 memories funny enough. Something that's wild to me is you get access to both those coins at the same time in the game, but they knew it would be so hard to get both of them they made it a skill check at the end of helm. Even with FF gauntlet platforming difficulty increase it's wild they put one of the hardest challenges in dk64 in level 3. They could've even made it that if you pay extra coins you get an extra life or something, anything to make it slightly easier. To this day I've never beaten the DK arcade on vanilla hardware, I hate it that much

I was a huge fan of this game when I was a teenager, but now looking back I see that nostalgia was the reason I used to really enjoy this game. But nowadays I just can't, not only does this game have a lot of collectibles, it also forces the player to collect these two coins, which are a pain in the a**, to beat the game. These two minigames aren't nearly close to fun, they only made me extremely furious and that's it. Idek why the creators of this game thought it would be a good idea to prevent players from beating the game by forcing them to have collected those coins, but that's just not it

If you had to make the arcade games required, I would have it be abridged versions- you get the Golden Banana by beating 25m, and then Squawks tells you that the final level will give you the Nintendo Coin. You pull the lever again, and you get skipped to 100m. You still gotta do it in one life each, but you don’t have to struggle through the whole arcade game. You can do that in the extras if you want to.

Good video! I _hated_ these coins as a kid. I agree it is one thing to have these as fun optional challenges, but to make them _required_ to beat the game is absurd! Level 3 in Donkey Kong was an absolute nightmare! I always sweat bullets when I reached the top and had to time avoiding that stupid spring! It also took me awhile to get a handle on the loose controls in Jetpac as you just had so much flying at you that it was sometimes difficult to react to the enemies. I like the idea of having these two coins unlock something optional, like you said. Maybe have them each unlock a new mode, new multiplayer character, or even a secret cheats menu. I mean, I don't mind the Donkey Kong arcade game, but doing a ridiculous challenge like hard mode should not prevent the average player from actually completing the game. As much as I love Rare, they sometimes had some really questionable game design at times.

I'd honestly argue that the worst part of these coins is something that you didn't really mention (as far as I could tell, anyway): Until you get to the coin door, *_THERE IS NOTHING IN THE GAME THAT TELLS YOU THESE COINS ARE REQUIRED._* Oh, sure, we know about it _now,_ but back in 1999, when the game was first released? Kids who just wanted to see the ending would be speeding merrily along, doing only the bare minimum needed to get through the levels, only to be confronted with a door that won't open without the coins. In the end, it's just a bunch of godawful tedium that made us pull our hair out - mostly due to the Donkey Kong Arcade's one-life limit.

So many hours of frustration as a kid, knowing I finished Hideout Helm but couldn't get to the final boss until I finish that arcade game. I did eventually pull it off, but always felt it was unnecessary to take what could have just been a neat bonus minigame and turn it into a mandatory part of the game.

Agreed! If it was a neat bonus that gave us something like Krusha or cheat codes, we'd be far more forgiving

I agree with every part of this video, while the beetle, rabbit, and Beaver Bother were what killed my hopes of reaching full completion as a kid, the monstrosity of the DK arcade game is what kept me from reaching the end of the game. It doesn't give me much trouble anymore, but as a kid I remember sitting down with my dad and enlisting him in my crusade to get that damn Nintendo Coin, and that horrible feeling when we found out we only got the EASY reward was just crushing. Over the years I've gotten good enough to where while 75m used to give me all the trouble (because of the last dash to Pauline), nowadays 25m gives me more trouble due to the unpredictability of the barrels halfway up.

It was 2005 and I was 13 when I finally beat the DK arcade. My brother and I had already had DK64 for a few years when I decided to go back practice the arcade game til I figured it out. I remember only getting a golden banana for it the first time. Rather than giving up, I figured I beat it once, so I could beat it again. And I did! The very next time, if I recall.

One tip for the third level to avoid the Springs near the end at the top: run to the left of the ladder. There's a small space that the Spring jumps over. I know it's tempting to finish the level by climbing the ladder as fast as possible - and that's exactly how I've lost a lot of times with just one pixel interaction from the Spring!

I wouldn’t mind having physical versions of the coins. Getting them from old games in the game was unique but there’s no way to really know you should be looking for them. It also felt odd that only 15 medals were needed and they don’t serve any other purpose afterwards

Suggestion for fixing it, I think what you said is perfect. Have the door lead to a non required room and put something juicy and exclusive behind it. Maybe even place the door in a different spot near the beginning and it’ll let you skip the whole level or something. Maybe it’s a weapon that one shots king k.

i think a simple change would be simply remove the coins required to play the DK game, that way if it ended up taking a bunch tries you wouldn't potentially run out of the coins and have to leave to go get more, but a more impactfull change could be simply give you the banana and tbe Nintendo coin at the same time instead of making you play the game twice

When I was 11, there were this arcade centers, places full of arcade machines and one of the most popular games was Donkey Kong. The first time I played it took me 2 quarters to beat it, and an extra one to do hard mode. I'll tell you my secret, I stopped to watch the pattern of the game. Only a couple tries, boom, you're done. And when I played DK64 and got to this part, now as a man... I was back home, zip zap zoom, done. DK64 is for babies. You kids... My issues are not even the difficulty or the mini games. My issue is, as you already mentioned, the fact that the coins are needed, but nothing tells you they are. The dialogues asking you if you want to try them makes them SEEM optional, until you hit that door to key 8. And then, for the Nintendo coin, you have to go back to an earlier level you probably finished ages ago, just find that arcade machine. Fun! (Also, nice Jontron reference.)

Yup, Level 3's second flame enemy is the worst aspect of the Arcade Game. It refuses to leave the lower platform until luck is on my side. I recently beat the arcade game three times to see if anything secret popped up and ohmygosh, will not attempt anytime soon. It seemed even harder! Pretty brutal throughout all levels with how enemies & barrels chase you down. I adore the flame that forces you to get a running start at the beginning LOL K. Lumsy was so lovable that younger me kept at it for his freedom xD I agree that the best option would just be limiting the keys to bosses. I actually wouldn't even mind Jetpac being the only requirement with the Rare coin. The arcade game, in my opinion, should have just been a fun unlockable along with DK Jr. if they really wanted. I will most likely beat arcade DK again if the game hops onto Switch but glitches are tempting haha Awesome video!

A couple of suggestions, assuming that we keep the coins as a barrier (as it IS a nice touch to gather from both Nintendo and Rareware history to stomp through to K. Rool) 1: Make the door only require one of the coins. (The previous door was four battle crowns. Four out of TEN. Why require BOTH of these unique collectibles to finish the game?) 2: Make the door lead to the two fairies, but not the key. (Cool optional reward in fairy goodies and those going for 100%, no longer required for game completion.) 3: Treat the Arcade machine rematch like, well, an arcade machine. Allow a player who has lost all their lives to pump in a few more coins and continue where they died, especially since it ALREADY COSTS COINS, WHICH ARE A FINITE RESOURCE, TO REMIND YOU. (Internal screaming regarding the original form of this stupid challenge)

Each try for the Nintendo coin costs 2 DK coins, so is it possible to screw it up? What if you collected every DK coin in the game and then spent them on losing the arcade? It's not likely, but still possible, right? Then it would be impossible to get the coin, and thus to finish the game.

Donkey Kong was alright but also probably because I had that game both on oldschool systems and gameboy and played it to death. Jetpack, however, was brutal. The first stage was easy, the second throws you for a loop and by the third stage you're just anxious because it doesn't take much at all to lose all your lives. These coins stop blocked me from the end game for a ridiculously long time because I did not have DK64 as a teenager. That was the period where a messy separation from my abusive dad meant I lost my entire N64. I didn't play these games until later in life and they WERE a lot easier, but god are they unnecessarily difficult and simultaneously unnecessary as a roadblock.

I remember that as a kid, it took me an awful lot of time getting the Jetpac coin, I think I actually never got it myself and just watched my brother get it Playing the game on emulator a few months back, it took me some time to figure out that you only really need to get to level 2, then just stay on the bottom right corner of the screen and shoot whatever's coming at you, the 5k points will be here in no time. Then it's just a matter of reaching the coin and voilà As for the classic DK game, for whatever reason as a teen I tryharded the hell out of this game (maybe on a GBA classic collection, I'm not sure) so when I had to do it again on DK64, I legit beat it first try for the first run, and maybe two or three attempts for the second one. Level 3 is the only one that's actually hard, the last part where you have to go above the spring is a close call every time! I even found an old arcade machine while on vacation a few weaks ago that had a lot of classic games, including DK, so I gave it a shot, and that version only had the first and fourth levels, so it was easy enough to beat lmao

The Rareware Coin really wasn't that bad. It's the DK Arcade game that made collecting these coins a pain. My main püroblem was always the first level. The randomness of the barrels always got me and we only have one extra life. Then Level 3 comes along. I can't count how often I died on the final ladder because the spring overlapped with the upper half of the ladder while Mario was almost at the top. The second round wasn't better.
