Liam!! Your the answer I've been waiting for. YOU KNOW ABOUT MARKETING STUFF!! I've just been doing the KZbin equivalent of tossing stuff at a wall for the last 6 years or so. lol. So one thing I've always loved about your channels is how highly organized everything is. Like you got the separate channel for JUST One Piece stuff and then the one for JUST Hunter X Hunter. I've always tossed around the idea to break my stuff up in other channels but i guess because I've been on the platform for so long i think that it's too late to do something like that but honestly with the new year i think it might be the best time to change my strategy up. I do have a vlog channel i never use so i could put my streams there and with Bleach returning i was aiming to make a Bleach only channel as well. Thanks so much for your insight!

While Tekking's content is diverse you forget to mention the overall plotline of a brick's rise to greatness. Tekking literally sold brick plushies. I am not sure his audience is anyway close to average people on youtube. All hail Barry our lord and savior.

I enjoy his videos truly but not the intros...... ever since he brought that damn brick into his videos I don't watch his intros ever anymore I get certain people find that funny but I find it kind of dumb and cringy but I think the length of his videos is just fine and I like the diversity of his channel so youtube can go f*** itself with this whole "consistency" issue

I didnt observe that , did it bleed organically?! Cause mr morjes plushie looks cute and fitting, accidently i know a twitch/youtuber nekosuris, that that absurd zany often but grounded an very wholesome, that went, over time it went organically catgirl because memes and fanart and jokes. Short he sells noweven daimakura because eem memes and jokes about it. XD Great if weird community personally. That can happen organically. Maybe tekking is that for people?! Anyways pretty sure liam could sell pillows with his memable face. There i skallagrimm but he is same humor really but more grounded and talks very professional but also with tons of humor about, everything weapons esecially europeans, mostly swords and knives you can ever ask, even has the pollem them rightly meme. And is really calming but fun too. Good asmt channel if anyone needs one. Its interesting too of course but the vibe is very calming and nice and holesome, if bob ross were a funny canadian hema nerd. With a dry humor tendency dad jokes which is just fun and chill. For credit, youtube hates progressive politics adressed nuanced or weapons, dont do that, and politics that are progresive, dont expect mercy. If you do becaus you ant still best wishes ther is a community, but donr expect algorith love, weapons even more. No matter how reasonable.

Matt is possibly the most genuine person on this platform. He's a breathe of fresh air everytime I watch him. He never asks for subscribers in any of his videos only that you maybe leave with a smile after. I understand Liams take and its very true the algorithm will maybe not cater to a channel like Tekkings in the present but regardless of that I would always suggest him if I ever have a friend ask me for more One Piece content because Matt is a gold mine

I would also say that his unstructured, “shoot the s**t” kind of content gives it more longevity than if it was scripted in a strange way. For example, he’s started uploading his stuff on Spotify and listening on shuffle while commuting just feels like I’m listening to any other podcast. The only way his content would get better for me is if he finally started his own podcast with new guests every episode (aka, his dream of being a late night talk show host).

The first time watched a tekking video, I too was hesitant at first because of the video length. I forgot what was the video about but the point is I clicked and I liked it. For a tekking video does not feels like a KZbin video, it feels more of a podcast - long format and a deep dive. The dude is relatable and likable. You can feel he's not doing just for the money but for the sheer joy of sharing what he's passionate about and that resonates to his audience.

Honestly all the stuff you mentioned as drawbacks is why I watch Tekking… Because it’s so varied and spontaneous it feels like it’s made by a human and not a machine. Sure a more “standardized” KZbinr will be able to play the algorithm better, but you also get sick of him fast. It’s basically like eating in a McDonalds each day. Also I believe it will course burnout for the creator much faster as well.

2 things One, I really love the long like 40-60 or more videos. Tekking doesn’t drag out videos and fill it with crap, he likes to get all the details and share his opinions / theories. His Donquixotes family video was a prime example of this Two, I absolutely agreed when you said he’s cringey. I believe my first video I saw from his channel was either Eneru vs other characters, or Doflamingo vs Katakuri. I was immediately like “holy shit these are the most low quality white teen gags ever…. I love it.” So yeah after spending the last year of my life binging Tekking101 and viewing every single one of his theory and discussion videos and half of his chapter reviews I have grown very fond of his silly low quality gags

Interestingly, tekking used to have a very specific niche: he was the Bleach guy. He actually started covering the big 3 before realizing that it was more efficient to hyper focus in one. And when it ended, he struggled for a while trying to find a new niche before landing on One Piece. None of them were ever a completely exclusive niche, but a big enough portion of his channel to work decently with the algorithm. So you're even more right. Even back then, niches were the game. Tekking is simply big enough to get away with having wider content.

Maybe its not great as a brand and maybe its not compatible with the way youtube works, but the advantage against more youtubers its that he feels waaay more as a person than something processed. Everything that you described as something “negative” about tekking is why I (and I’m sure others) like his videos and consistently watch his videos. Not saying that you’re wrong but Tekking really isn’t your average youtuber and this is why he is really loved by the people who consistently watch him. I watch Tekking daily. My morning routine is I wake up, get my coffee, and watch some Tekking. It doesn't matter what he's putting up, as long as it's Tekking being Tekking. Now I probably sound nuts, but the whole point of Tekking is that you don't watch it for just the content (it can't be total shit), but you watch it for Matt. It's a personality driven channel, and the topic content is side garnish. Whereas your channel is different. I watch it for "a thing", and then turn it off when that thing is no longer there. Ultimately, I don't think Tekking is interested in "growing a brand". He's more interested in just growing a community that hangs out with him, and that's a totally different strategy. His focus seems to be cultivating 1000 true fans who will be there for him through thick and thin, and he just seems happy to tend to his parish. In the long run, I honestly think it's a more sustainable strategy that does more good for people, but it's never going to be a big money maker or be a big channel with broad market appeal. I personally subscribe to that parish mentality.

Ufffff, harsh but true. I think the key difference is between offering a content and offering a personality. Teking offers a very bright persona which is very hard to come by in KZbin, whereas GLR offers a content which is removed from his general persona. KZbin forcing its content creators to pigeon-hole their content into a specific format hinders the creative process. In my opinion. KZbin is supposed to be a platform to express yourself in whatever way you deem fit. That's why I have much respect for Tekking. He stays true to himself. Not many content creators do that when their is profit incentive. Although I'm pretty sure Tekking has a huge patron following and has the loyal subscribers that help to support the content he makes. Its much harder for smaller creators to make a living from KZbin. Especially since KZbin algorithm requires its creators to pump out content like a factory machine. Pretty difficult to do when your just starting off and probably working 1 or two other jobs simultaneously to make rent. It's a messed up system for sure.

100% agree, but it's pretty clear that KZbin is not about to change the way it operates because we don't like it. They have no real competition, so our discontent is not going to stop us from staying in the platform, hence why it is not going to change in the way we wish it to.

To be honest, everything you mentioned are the reasons why I love Mat's channel. Unlike some people, he doesn't make use of CAPS LOCK TITLES and Click Baits. I absolutely love OP and his videos offer new knowledge about the world and the characters. I understand that YT is indeed a source of revenue and you gotta do things in a certain way. But you can sense Tekking's passion and love for the media from his videos which is truly relatable and makes you want to support him even more.

Honestly Matt's videos are by far my favorite OP YT content. He fits the series of OP so well. His high energy and indepth content matched with his personality is a beautiful mixture as if God Usopp were telling the story himself. There is a magic there that you do not see on this channel often where your content feels mostly dry but with a fun accent that makes you entertaining.

This is so bizarre to me... unironically and arrogantly proclaiming that being a sellout shill is great and everyone should do it, while condemning the approach of being genuine to oneself and doing what they want and are passionate about. Seems to be basically saying "I wanna make more money at any and all cost and expose anyone who dares to defy the holy algorithm". Then condemning the genuine approach of "I wanna talk about my passions and genuinely share it with others with integrity true to myself. Admittingly im older... but im used to this awful corporate sterile money grubbing ass licking approach to 'art' or entertainment of any kind being boo'd off stages and rejected by fans as soon as someone was revealed to be such a person. Apparently now its not just accepted but being outright promoted and praised rather than fought against?! What and why!? Is this what we teaching the newer generations? Be unapologetically openly greedy and shallow as if these are good things and should be our source of inspiration... Fuck it, everyone just make 8-10 videos that say less than a wiki summary. Just farm that "kids watching on tablets" ad revenue! Please talk down to us, explain a story to us in most dry uninspired way possible and be sure you dont get deep or analytical, dont go off script and dont dare talk longer than the algorithm and profit motive dictate. Just copy paste simplified summaries and explain things that everyone who cared enough to watch or read a series already knew... its fine as long as u increase profit. Just follow the algorithm like its your bible, make a vid for every possible wiki entry for every series that can make us more money, and one day perhaps you can afford to create an AI to make videos for you which will be awesome. We dont need to read manga, watch anime, or bother thinking about it. Just watch 10 minute summary videos made by an automated AI that follows automated algorithms to maximize profit. Then you wont ever have to read or think for yourself again, and ill get rich off of your ignorance, and promote the system that allows me to skim as much profit as possible. Neat idea. I already disliked the guys content, his HxH vids were the most dry and uninspired HxH content i came across, but it didnt bug me. There are a few bad channels out there that are just griftin the system for easy money and have nothing to add to the fandom and nothing original to say, hes not doin any harm right? Now i actually dislike him and find his values to be disgusting to see in any creative medium. I expected this attitude from psychopathic Ceo's, stock brokers, and bankers, ect. Are 8-10 min summary videos really the best way to explore, expand, and engross yourself in the passion a good story? Who cares... all irrelevant, fuck creativity, passion, art, reading and thinking... holla holla make that dolla boi! Bling bling chaching... truly a role model for us all! Lets be sure to spread the doctrine!

I've been listening to Tekking since his BLEACH reviews and I just love watching/and/or just listen to him while I do my own things. His voice is so energetic and passionate, he be an incredible professor to listen to his courses (whatever subject it may be). But I also enjoy watching him. Him being in his room (now his office) is like going to see your friend and talk about the latest One Piece theories, character development and so on. It felt so organic, and when he dresses up for his reviews, it's simply great! Even like this, he has grown as a channel and has made his mark in fandoms. He is even verified on Twitter. Keep it going, @Tekking101! We love to see it!

As a big Tekking fan I found this video really interesting and informative, I've been watching youtube for many years and I've also taken an interest to the mechanics behind engagement and I very much agree that Tekking's content is only possible because of the long term staying power he's had, if he was starting today he probably wouldn't have the viewership he has, speaking only from an algorithmic perspective. I just wonder how big he would be if he did what's suggested in this video, and just how big your channels are gonna get while following this strategy. I think a lot of people didn't get that this isn't an attack on Tekking's content or personality, but an analysis on upload strategies and how it mostly affects the people trying to get into the space.

I really love Tekking's energy and vibe. The kinda guy that seems great to hang out with. His vids were great for me getting back into the fandom because of how thoroughly he recaps events. But now that I'm more familiar with OP in general, his videos seem very redundant, in that they mostly just recap info we already know; like taking 40 minutes to recap a chapter that takes 6 minutes to read. Nowadays I prefer videos that are more focused on insights and opinions, like Morj and JB.

i think in the case of someone like tekking, it works well enough since he is a (relatively) large creator with a large established audience but like you’re saying it may be hindering him from growing more from where he is currently, that said, for him personally he may not care about having an explosive growth like that and is happy where he is definitely agree about what the overall point though which is that it’s not exactly a good MODEL to follow for anyone thinking of starting their own channel

All this just makes me love Tekking even more. Matt is genuine through and through, he doesn't shove adverts down your throat, doesn't try to artificially 'professionalise' everything, which is itself a meta kind of cringe, and he doesn't bend to the whims of the algorithm. Although he is in some ways inconsistent, he's consistently, reliably inconsistent which is quite reassuring!

Here is what I’ve learned from this video: 1) Channels should stay focused on a single topic if they want to be successful. 2) Channels should have relatively consistent video lengths so they keep all potential viewers. 3) Tekking is a god that ignores all norms and still succeeds. 4) All hail Barry.

1. Nah, even if the algorithm favours making separate channels, you're better off limiting your channels to as few as possible to avoid having a lot of your repeat viewers not know about other content you make that they'd be interested in, and only make a second channel if your audience really doesn't like having a particular genre mixed in, like videogames on a channel that primarily focuses on horror stories and conspiracy theories. 2. Can be helpful but at the same time, youtube's interested more in engagement when recommending videos, so a unique style or unusual content will get you more push than sticking to some standard video length.

The thing is, I think video length consistency is almost impossible for the type of videos that Tekking makes, where he analyzes anime and manga. He might have more crucial things to say in one video and less in another, and he doesn't want to intentionally skip over talking points because a video is getting too long or artificially inflate the length of it if it's too short.

KZbin is scary, I’ve noticed that KZbin mostly sends me video topics and formats that I prefer. For example I almost never watch Tekking’s one piece chapter reviews and despite those being one of his most reliable uploads KZbin never recommends me them. KZbin is pretty intuitive, so while I agree with you about consistency, I think KZbin will most likely recommend videos similar in length and topic to the one you watched first, at least in the beginning.

I understand Liam's point. I won't argue with everything he said especially since he made this video for the upcoming youtubers. This is just my own opinion as I can't speak in behalf of Matt, yes, he may be in to it (wealth, fame, growth), but, the weight compared to him just enjoying what he is doing is totally incomparable. Matt just really loves what he's doing and is contented with whatever the paycheck maybe. Again, this is just my own understanding of what I see in him. Nevertheless, Liam really made a great arguement. 👏

The thing that set Tekking apart from other channels (for me at least) is that he’s very welcoming, not trying to criticize other more serious KZbinrs but he doesn’t have an Elitist aura to him. Watching him reminds you that everyone is a fan regardless of where they experience it. I know a lot of other channels who try to be positive usually brings down some fans by shooting down they’re ideas or regurgitating how wrong they are.

Obviously this wasn’t made as a Tekking diss but it’s interesting to see how content creators plan their content.. the very metrics you use to determine your video length may be Keeping you from more growth. Just like how you said the “average” viewer watches 40 min a day. Well I have a 1.5 hour commute one way so his +40 min videos literally keep me going. The videos that lay 4-12 minutes almost will never get watched by me because I’m not gonna stop mid drive to select another 5 minute video when I could potentially have to do the same thing 14 more times. Just like how Dude in a room says there’s a niche for everybody but when I do have the freedom to scroll and browse I’ll watch GLR and DinAR but in my daily life may or may not click on shorter videos immediately. Of course I’ll go back and click later but a lot of them get lost

Liam, I started watching grandline review because your style was what appealed to me. At the time, a few years ago, I wasn't really into watching facecam videos of dudes in rooms talking for an hour. What i liked about your early videos was the 10 minute length discussion a single focused topic such as a specific devil fruit, while using screenshots related to what you were talking about. It reminded more of the old style of YT I missed so much where not everyone needed to appear with their face on video. I still like your videos and I understand why you made changes to your visual formula, but what you offered at first was unique and I may not have gotten into your channels so much if you started off as the generic facecam dude in a room guy.

If I was asked who my fave OPtuber was, I wouldn't be able to decide. My tastes are super flaky and whoever I watch is down to what mood I'm in. GLR is good for consistency and I come here to take in content to help me sort through what I read in the recent chapter in a more to-the-point manner. But my critique would be that I have to actively look at the screen to take in what I'm hearing, if I tried to do something like drawing or sewing, I stop taking in what I'm hearing. On the other hand Tekking might be a bit all over the place, but I can have his videos playing while I'm doing something and somehow I can take in what he's saying. It's like my minds eye can see what he's doing.

To me it’s more of a podcast type format where I can work on homework or play a game while listening in. While your videos are amazing and other content creators as well I feel like it is more required to look at the visuals that are put up as they add extra context to the video, while tekking is someone who can give you every bit of context that you need with his passion and knowledge of the anime he’s in. I think his format and his channel is unique and smart and definitely has a growing audience and will continue to.

GLR, Tekking101 and Morj are my top 3 One Piece KZbinrs I go to on the regular 1. Morj for his big brain analyses of the story, the themes, the characters, the subtext and the predictions/theories that come with them. However, it's safe to say that at this point the raid will not fail. 2. Grand Line Review for his awesome takes on the meta aspect of One Piece, such as how people consume One Piece, the reactions of said people to certain story decisions, AND, beyond all else, his invaluable input when it comes to calling BS on people's ridiculous theories. It's good to have someone who is so mature/level-headed/skeptical when it comes to One Piece and doesn't treat Oda as if he's the greatest all-knowing seer that he clearly isn't. Not everything is "foreshadowing", people 3. And last but certainly not least, Tekking101 for just being himself. I hated his cringe-y-ness to my very core when I first stumbled upon his videos back when he was mainly a Bleach content creator, but since he was the only one doing these stupidly-long talks about Bleach, I decided to just stick with him. Boi-oh-boi somehow I just got used to it and even came to love it. I guess this is because he has learned to accept his cringe, and perhaps even use it as his strength. Tekking101 is just so chill to listen to and I would just have his videos running in the back when I''m doing random chores/playing
