The reason your hinges didn’t feel right is because you forced them out when they were in the wrong position. They need to be pushed out while the hinge is in the open detent position so that both slots line up. They also need to be reinserted this way. You should also keep track of which is the left hinge and which is the right hinge since they seem to be colored differently in some systems. You can use the part that fits inside of a Bic Round Stic ink pen to retract the clips and push out the hinge. If it doesn’t push it out on its own, well, it’s hollow so you can still push through it with a screwdriver or something. You’ll have to trim off the cone part of the Bic pen to fit it in the left hinge because of a rib that blocks you but, once in, you open the hinge to the detent position and push with something that reaches all the way through from the right hinge. Alternatively you can use a 3D printed piece that Makho released a few days ago. It does the same thing to release the hinges without destroying a Bic ink pen. :)

Followed this and a couple other guides on re-shelling and thought I'd chip in a discovery that helped - I was having a really hard time getting the hinges into the new shell until I tried lifting up the front cover (as if opening the console) while pressing in (lightly) on the hinge cap - at some point just before the console would be fully open, I felt the hinge budge in a bit. Easing it back and forth over this point while gradually increasing the amount of pressure on the hinge was how I finally got the damn thing in, with way less pressure than my failed attempts to just force them in. Hopefully this helps somebody!

I originally purchased a boxed Pearl White GBA SP with Metroid Zero Mission from Circuit City (Black Friday 2004), so it definitely existed. I'm pretty sure they also had it in Japan as a Final Fantasy bundle or something. I don't know if the Pearl White color was a Circuit City exclusive in the USA (probably) but the Metroid Zero Mission Black Friday bundle certainly was (sticker on box for the bonus game). The thing is, my current CIB Pearl White GBA SP is actually an AGS-101 in a replica shell like yours. ;) I had no interest in the Pearl White GBA SP because I already had my launch unit (Cobalt), a Target Black Friday-exclusive DKC bundle (Lime Green), and a Limited Edition (Classic NES). I bought several that year for friends, family, and Salvation Army kids. One parent with a little girl insisted that I substitute a "girl game" so I gave Yoshi's Island instead (another awesome game) leaving me with a Metroid Zero Mission dupe. The friend I gifted one to threw away his box at my place, so I scavenged it. Months later another friend gave me a Pearl Blue AGS-101 in surprisingly rough shape with a broken screen. Crazy that it had been mistreated so much when they were still in stores! I had a huge setback where my Classic NES Limited Edition and Target-exclusive Lime Green GBA SP units were stolen so I got replacement parts for the broken AGS-101 and restored it with a Pearl White shell to complete my CIB. Because the Classic NES Limited Edition replacement shells recently appeared I have converted it to that to restore my other CIB. I may put my old Cobalt into the Pearl White shell/box but it's having strange issues with the sound (some sounds are much louder and the audio cuts out when I press Start or Select).

hey i think i may have diagnosed my problem and this seems like a good place to leave this: on my gba sp, all gameboy carts seem ever so slightly loose and the slightest bump causes the game to lock up, its 100% fine with advance games with zero problems. also occasionally it boots into "advance mode" even with a original gameboy cart installed in the slot. i got to looking at it and there is a switch inside the cart slot on the sp that is bumped "closed" when a original gameboy cart is installed. because of the placement of the switch and the shape of the original gameboy carts, it closes this switch which tells the gba sp to boot into original gameboy mode. sometimes mine even boots into gba mode even if there is a game boy cart installed. the switch in my sp seems to maybe have a broken hinge point on the switch because as i close it manually with a small pick i can see it cock and turn sideways as it closes completely as if its double hinged but their is no way they would design it that way. that slot switch on the sp, should move exactly like a door to your house, it should swing close on one axis, not start closing on one axis and then kick sidways as mine does where the top corner of the door ends up scraping the ceiling of your house. my guess is that this switch, when open should go into gba mode, when closed it goes into gb mode, when the hinge breaks on the switch i bet it can inadvertently "toggle" back between open and closed which flips the mode back and forth between gba and gb mode which causes the game to crash and occasionally even boot to gba mode when it has a gb game installed. sorry for long post, but i have heard no one else talk about this anywhere, i have made a video a video of the diagnosis, and upload but i suspect the only fix is a new pin header assembly and lots of fun soldering, which i may never do as it plays gba games just fine, buts driving me nuts knowing its malfunctioning

The reason you broke your original shell's hinge is because you attempted to remove it while the shell was closed. What you need to do is slightly wedge the hinge out so that a slit is visible on the side of the hinge's outer cover, OPEN the shell, and then use a small flathead screwdriver to slide the hinge out using the slit. It's smooth and requires very little force for it to slide out. Just an FYI to avoid breaking another shell as I see you're still not opening your new shell when you're messing with the hinges.

Hey Colin. I recently discovered your channel and have immense admiration for your know-how, thoughtful commentary, and the production value of your videos. I have a tricky situation I'd appreciate your input on if you'd be so kind. I have two second-hand Graphite AGS-101s I purchased (having great nostalgia for my long lost original unit). I did a lot of shopping around/homework/research before settling on these particular two. (One of them even came complete with the box & included literature, all in perfect condition.) So: one unit has a perfect (I mean PRISTINE) outer shell as it was used solely in a case.. but the inner shell is slightly scratched. The second of the two units has an utterly perfect inner shell.. but the outer shell has a few scratches. You can probably imagine where I'm going with this. Ultimately, I'd love to disassemble and combine the two: all four scratched up parts to make a scratched-unit.. and all four pristine pieces to make a fully perfect unscratched-unit. Your video on shell replacement was most helpful, and I've watched a few others as well. My fear is causing damage while removing the rubber nubs from the screen side of each case. Since I'm planning to keep both (with great deference to the pristine parts) I'm extremely hesitant to go to either of them with a craft knife. I'm stumped, and so far I just can't conceive of another tool/way to keep the parts safe as a result of this endeavor. At this point I feel like I have no choice but to leave the two units as-is and just accept the partial flaws of each. Any ideas?
@ThisDoesNotCompute8 жыл бұрын
I totally understand the dilemma. You could consider some alternative tools to remove those screw covers, like a fine needle, or you could pick up a cheap SP to practice on. Otherwise, you just need to figure out what would bother you more -- the scratches you have now, or the results of a mistake while removing the screw covers. If I were you, I'd go for it. The only thing I found difficult (and made a mistake with) was removing the screen hinge mechanisms. Good luck!
@RadamentsLair8 жыл бұрын
A needle actually sounds perfect - thanks for the suggestion. I've been thinking of getting a second hand unit for my nephew, so that may end up being good practice material. I'm definitely thinking I'll go ahead with the shell shuffle. Cheers!

Thankfully, it doesn't seem to have made any difference (the hinges seem to stay in place OK as long as there is something still there to hold them in). But if I were to do it again, I'd probably order some new hinges along with any new case. It's just too much bother and risk to try and retrieve them from the old shell.

I tend to do a condensed view, above or to the side of what I'm taking apart.

the best way to replace the shell on a GBA SP is to send it to Nintendo. You get the original shell, and you can also get Nintendo to check it for other issues in the meantime.

After I did my shell replacement my Left and Right buttons of the DPad stopped working properly. I need to press them really hard for them to work. I will try to put everything in the original case again and see how it goes, it might be the quality of the case but if not, how hard or easy is to fix those buttons on the board?

Does it matter if the shell is for ags 001 or 101?

The type of springs in the gba triggers are called torsion springs, and yes they can indeed stab you and leave a nasty gash, same with the one in the SNES eject button, moral of the story, torsion springs are annoying

I've recently completed a shell replacement on a couple gameboy advances non sp using kits purchased from ebay. Missing from those kits were the membranous buttons for the start and select function. I havn't been able to locate any sellers of this piece, without having to purchase a full console and remove them. Any tips on where I might find one?

Hi have you come across any 101's with inverted colors? Also, do you know what the little gold dial is thats adjustable from the battery compartment? Seems like a clarity control but not sure if it has anything to do with the inverted color problem.

Hello, I just picked up a GBA SP AGS101, I was wondering through your experience modifying GBA's, if the backlight on the AGS101 can be separated from the LCD (just like the backlight on the Gameboy Pocket and Original GB kits)? On mine it appears there are specks of dirt between the LCD and backlight. Pretty sure it's not dead pixels because it looks like it's on a lower plane from the LCD pixels. Just wondering how much can the AGS101 LCD screen be taken apart. Thank you, and your videos are very informative.

So a few years ago I had dropped my gba sp and the screen no longer works. There are no cracks on the screen, and it lights up when it turns on but nothing will display, just a white screen. Is there any way to fix this similar to the way you can fix the speaker by pulling up the metal "spring terminals" (11:00)? Or is this permanent damage and would require me to buy a new screen?

Do other functions still work? Might be looking at a bad ribbon cable or battery issues.

Maybe when it fell, part of the ribbon cable just got disconnected. That's happened to me before
