So Matt asks "when is the last time Nintendo introduced a new IP": Not only did Austin guess wrong (it's not Splatoon), he's using it as a point to argue all Nintendo does is release the same games. And sure, they have a lot of long running IP that get semi regular releases. ARMS was a new IP dropped in 2017, Ring Fit Adventure was a new IP dropped in 2019. Clubhouse Games 51 in 2020, Good Job! in 2020, Astral Chain in 2019, Sushi Striker in 2018, Ever Oasis in 2017... Buddy Mission Bond... No, not all of those games took off of course. But some absolutely did. Ring Fit Adventure has sold over 15m copies, Clubhouse Games 51 has been a resounding success, Astral Chain might be in line for a sequel... Nintendo actually typically publishes at least one new IP every year. Some years, multiple. Nintendo never stopped making new IP and new games, they just don't all have the staying power or blow up, like Nintendo's long running IP. Sometimes, they do - see Splatoon, now on its third succesful game in a row. But Nintendo is not the company to rag on for never trying new things when they do, indeed do. All the time. Yes, they reky on their big money makers (like everyone else does), but they don't only put those games out. Their last release was Pikmin 4, a series that's never cracked 3m in sales. Just saying, we need to respect that output a bit more than Matt is trying to do. He obviously is unaware of most of this and they aren't a Nintendo specific channel, but your lack of awareness doesn't change the facts. Anyways, as for Matt's arguments on why he won't buy a Switch 2: "They haven't done anything to make me want one" Matt my guy, they haven't done anything for ANYONE to make them buy one. They haven't announced it yet. It's far too premature to be like "I won't buy a switch 2 and Nintendo hasn't convinced me" for a platform that hasn't been announced/unveiled and all we actually know are a few scant rumors that don't even really give you a feeling one way or another on the complaints at hand. "graphics that look modern, power" - okay, well we don't even know any of these details yet. Just seems premature to even have a stance like this on a currently unannounced system. I look forward to the episode next year after it's unveiled and shows off something like Elden Ring to see how he feels.

@@destructodisk9074 Nintendo’s output is unmatched in the industry. The sheer volume of games dropped yearly and at a very consistent quality level. Look I game in all platforms but I try my best to not have ignorant takes when I dive into lesser known stuff for me. Matt’s comparison is kinda flawed in a sense that using his logic ps3 to ps4 didn’t have a big upgrade cause fifa 12 and fifa 15 doesnt look that different. I do understand why they don't take risks anymore however it's disappointing because when they took those risks they made some of the best gaming hardware/software they ever made. Like mario kart double dash was not terribly well received but I think it's a hilariously fun and chaotic game that actually takes skill to get to know and master. It's just that all the game reviewers and 5 year olds who don't know how to play games said it sucked.

The Switch can play PC games, PS5, PS4 and anything else over streaming as well as having great media performance in movies and music. It's runs thousands and thousands of retro games and has a fantastic form factor. I'm eagerly awaiting the new one to see how they can improve something that performs so well.

I buy Nintendo for the exclusives and the gimmick and Nintendo treats their products like it's crack. Gives you a taste of the good stuff every 5 years to keep you there then sells you the stuff cut with fiberglass the rest of the time. By all rights, Metroid should be on its 16th game. Mother 3 should've been out years ago, and Starfox should have every spinoff imaginable. Currently there are original Nintendo characters on the Smash roster that adults don't know because their last game came out 4 years before they were born. Nintendo is a juggernaut, they should be flooding us with content and they don't.

Matt is 100% correct Nintendo is a complete rip off they do it with Zelda. They do it with Mario and they keep selling you the same thing over and over again and I guarantee you probably the next Nintendo switch too. They’re gonna make you buy all the same games you already own by not letting you play them which is ridiculous. That’s usually what they do but I really hope the switch to is fully backwards compatible to the switch. That would be the best not only that I really hope Nintendo decides to do some new franchises because they never do that anymore and it’s kind of sad. But another thing I don’t really like about Nintendo is they always think their games are valued at full price other video games from other systems go down in price after time Nintendo usually only drop by 20 bucks when they’re on sale and they’re always usually full price

isn't ARMS there last introduced IP? I mean it flopped... but it was new and had potential. Also, the only way nintendo is going to compete with the power of the steam deck is if they are willing to sell their console at a loss, which they simply won't do. The gameboy was vastly underpowered in it's time and that thing lived a successful life for what? 10 years? Also, I don't think it is fair to blame nintendo this much for the travesty that is the current state of Pokemon games.

The only thing Nintendo has going for them is there literal brand name franchises but most of those sequels to this day could be just DLC. For graphical comparison the switch is just getting PlayStation 3 era games ported to it. That don't run fantastic if that's not a sign how behind Nintendo is in the horsepower department idk what is. It feels like when the Nintendo "upgrades" they're just catching up to last generation of gaming and that's being nice.

Splatoon was not their most recent ip, arms, snipperclips, ring fit adventure. While not as sucessful new ip are still attempting to be worked on. The same thing can be said about the competion. Where are sony new ip past the launch of the ps5. What ip do microsoft have but halo that they havent bought?. Switch players are the casual audiance, they dont mind the 30fps, it works for most people which is why people turn a blind eye to it. PC gaming that barely gets 30fps on hardware 4x more powerful is shamed upon because pc gamers are the power users and not the casual audiance, they spend way more to play and subsequently expect way more. Complaining about too many mario games is just being a silly sausage, People like them, with mario behind them you know its going to be a quality experiance with characters people like, its a no brainer. Splatoon nearly was launched with mario characters instead of inklings. Mario is so big, massive and easy to market that for less serious party games like mariocart and marioparty it just makes sense because it tells people that they are going to have a good time. I think if you are a switch power user and a lover for nintendo you propabaly should buy a switch 2 but for the casuals who dont need the extra power, sticking with their current model is more than enough for most people. Complaining about graphics to me is like compaining about the stylalised look of across the spiderverse, saying that if a movie isnt hyperealistic then you cant enjoy it. Not evrething needs to look like real life, games can still have an artstyle. If you are really desprate for lifelike graphics you definetly own a pc play on their. Saying that nintendo abandon their last gen consoles when a new one is released is just wrong. Watch some of the 2017, 2018 directs. You will see new 3DS games announced anlongside new switch games. Or better yet when announcing new DS games also relasing new GBA games. I will take the hit on the backwards compatability but how was nintendo going to make you put a WIIU disk in the switch. It will become just an utter mess. The DS lite can play all the ds games and GBA games. Futher GBA can play og game boy games. This just seems like a low hanning fruit. People that want to play the wiiu games on their switch, defo own a wiiu and the games without a doupt. The poeple most likely rebuying the games are people who have never played them before. I can kind of get behind the less than 1080p is unnaceptable, but in all honsetly people peopabally wownt know a difference if its 1080p if it has good AA. People who will see the diffenece is who the switch isnt for, people who demand that much quality are the pc power users who refuse to play anything that isnt 4k 144fps, which is rediculous for a console for young kids, they dont need that much to have a good time. "I dont think the switch will be able to play games like the steam deck, because it hasnt happened yet - matt" do you hear yourself ofc it hasnt happened yet because the new console isnt out yet ??? what ?? the steam deck is still very recent, the switch is nearly 7 years old, no shot it hasnt happened yet because it hasnt been released. That is literally what you are discussing, how did you mess up that bad. ong your switch online take is a W take, real asf, for 20 bones a year it can defo do more. I hope the switch 2 has more personality to it like the 3ds and wii and wiiu. Compaining that the jump to the ds to 3ds wasnt significant and didnt need to happen. Bro what. Look at super mario 3d land and super mario 64 ds and tell me that an upgrade didnt happen. You were arguing about needing a graphics upgrade for the switch 5 mins ago saying that nintendo dont upgrade. Nintendo intentionally invests in current or previous gen components to keep the costs of their consoles as low as possible, for two reasons: they always make money on their hardware (which is a rarity in gaming) and so more users can buy into their ecosystem. That's it. And that's why even though Nintendo does not have bleeding edge technology in the Switch, it's still selling more than any other console right now. Gamers may not compromise, but moms of casual gamers definitely do.
@PrimeTF

And another thing, Nintendo stopped competing against the other major console brands a while ago. Their whole pitch with the Wii is "we don't care about the graphical fidelity of our games, as long as we can express our design philosophy in the games themselves, that's all that matters." They don't need to rely on hardware specs to sell units, because they have a whole backlog of first-party exclusives of the upmost high quality (depending on which games you look at), and THAT's the reason you buy a Switch. There are some duds like what Pokemon is apparently doing, but there isn't anything else to compare it to, typical RPGs don't have you collecting a thousand party members with singular gimmicks with the idea of getting all of them. And even if they're glitchy to all hell, it's usually less often than offerings on other consoles (god forbid we talk about Cyberpunk 2077), and it only sticks out badly because it's being compared to Nintendo's other games that aren't nearly as broken. So comparing Nintendo to any other console manufacturer is basically like trying to compare a mainline Hasbro Transformers CHUG figure to a Masterpiece figure.

Where Sony, and Microsoft have significant, and noticeable, graphical leaps from gen to gen. The one Nintendo console that is arguable a pretty big jump in graphics is from the N64 to the Gamecube. I think a lot of people on this comment section are looking at Nintendo from a power perspective rather than from a developing perspective. Ask a Nintendo fan, Nintendo *DOES NOT CARE* about the graphics. The few times they did, Nintendo 64 and Gamecube, those consoles FLOPPED because they focused too hard on flexing muscles and NOT on making the consoles accesibles and easy to develop games for, a history that repeated with Wii U. This is why ever since the Wii they've been mostly focused on making gimmicky games or consoles, especially since they're an old fashioned game developer company that likes to make games or hardware based on a simple gimmick and exploiting it to its limit; The thing that Nintendo has *KIND OF* going on their field is that by being (somewhat) of a software-based developer company is that they deliver quality games. Sure they can give you 300+ Marios, but if out of all of those games 158-ish? of those Mario games are either quality titles or part of the hall of some of the most innovative and subjectively beloved games ever made, then that goes to show why they're still around and why people are both so defensive, and so forgiving about Nintendo. Thing is that Nintendo WON'T prioritize power or graphics because for them, even though the graphics look phenomenal and groundbreaking, that on itself doesn't equal to ensure constant quality games. I get you, I too would want to get the same experiences that Sony or Microsoft have because gamers shouldn't be blindfolding themselves to think that Scarlet and Violet just because it introduces a few gimmicks to the Pokemon formula, it might be better than Elder Ring; But there is an argument to be said in which Nintendo's approach is objectively the most focused one, is just that their execution more than not does not live up the the expectation of their fans and rightfully so, they might have the right approach but that has made them closed-minded to newer IPs, bigger stories, and more demanding presentation, which if that was that case like Sony's or Xbox's THEN they'd put power as priority for their games and consoles, but they know from history that focusing on that it can end on the opposite ground of backfiring. Is sad because is a pick your poison situation, you either have a company that focuses on good games at the expense of losing third parties due to their hardware not meeting the standard; Or a company that only focuses on power alone to sustain their longevity at the market, at the expense of their games meeting half the expectations hardcore gamers want, and disappointing the fandom they already have by giving them stuff they didn't ask for. Gamecube specifically taught Nintendo this lesson on a harsh way so much so it scarred them for life, according to Miyamoto. Would I want a Nintendo console on par to the PS5? *ABSOLUTELY*. But Nintendo has a track record of only delivering in halves, either you get a lot of good games and okay graphics, or good graphics and a few games, specially being basically a toy company at heart, which is why for them is so difficult to compete in power; They're the clickbait guys, the guys that use that something to draw new audiences and unless they can find a balance on both horse power AND novelty-based soft ware, much like the Switch, that might not seem like a viable approach for them. I hope to be proven wrong, however.

It's hardware is old, games run in 30 FPS, and graphics are well below other platfoms. But there is one thing that a Switch can do - give me fun. I bought it not for amazing hardware but for the original games (Nintendo has the best exclusives library in my opinion) that give me fun. That's the only thing that matters. "Nintendo does the bare minimum" who cares? Their bare minimum is more fun than a lot of stuff their competition does. If you don't want a new Switch don't buy it. But please keep those pointless and unhelpful rants to yourself.

Look at the price of the steam deck... That's 1 reason why the Switch's power isn't higher. Nintendo's systems are always lower than each generation's counterparts. They aim to be more affordable than the competition, but also improve to be where the others were. Playing on a DS and then playing on a 3DS, there was a big jump to me as a kid. Textures were nicer, models were smoother, gameplay was more complex on some games. The amazing Spider-Man game (apart from being limited in places) felt like I had a console game in my hands. They doubled the power from the SNES to the 64, and again to the Gamecube (and the Gamecube, by the way, was technically actually _more_ capable than PS2) The "gimmick" of having games fit in your pocket lived from Gameboy to DS to Switch, and all of them sold massively. The WiiU failed because they misread things. The console truly was gimmicky. The pad made no difference. So they made what people were expecting from the WiiU; something that could go from home to travel. And the execution was genius. So of course they let the wave of sales flow in rather than step in prematurely with some other thing, only adding a couple of slight refreshes, and providing a version for kids to have pure portability. But I hope they are reading the room, and see they are reaching the end of their sales road. They literally won't have anyone left to sell to, if they wait too long, and people _are_ wanting something better now. The Switch came out in the time of PS4. So give an upgraded version to be competitive, but below the $500 of PS5. The rumor of going back to LCD makes sense to compensate the price for upping the performance. You have to compromise on some things when it comes to this business. And Pokémon is a _terrible_ example to keep bringing up about Nintendo's quality. That's on Game Freak, not Nintendo.

I really hate bringing up piracy because it's still a taboo for most people but the sheer amount of games you can emulate on the Steam Deck/ROG Ally alongside the already gigantic library Steam has makes the argument just boiling down to Nintendo having their own IPs. The point Matt was saying in the video was that they're doing the absolute bare minimum to keep the majority of consumers happy, even if it means making the hardware 3 generations behind current options. The Steam Deck costs twice the amount of a Switch sure, but you get MORE than 2x the performance, compatibility and library of games.

I find it funny how Matt is saying Nintendo does nothing to push the envelope yet they're the only developer that actually has tried to innovate in the last 20 years and like others have said, Nintendo has never tried to be on the bleeding edge of graphics. You had the Wii, first mainstream console with motion control, I would argue the grandfather of modern VR, backwards compatible with the Gamecube, WILDLY successful. Nintendo DS, backwards compatible with Gameboy, dual screen, again WILDLY successful. Wii U, easily Nintendo's biggest flop, but introduced the Gamepad, really the first iteration of a hand held home console. 3DS, more powerful, native 3D support, led to the 2DS which I would say is the only incremental console Nintendo released, but it's what the market wanted, still WILDLY successful. And finally the Switch, the first mainstream portable home console. And I think paved the way for the Steam Deck/ROG Ally. He said they abandon their generational 'gimmicks', but realistically, what have they abandoned in the last 20 years? The Switch has motion control, and it's handheld, probably the two biggest 'gimmicks' of their last two consoles. Then the Nintendo DS family was supported for 16 years, 2004 - 2020. The only thing Nintendo really abandoned was the 3D effect from the 3DS. Meanwhile Microsoft and Sony ever only try incremental updates to their consoles, and copy Nintendo 'gimmicks' a few years later, i.e. Kinect and PS Move, and Project Q, which are subsequently abandoned. And just for the record, I'm not a Nintendo fanboy (PCMR). The newest Nintendo console I have is a GameCube, and Nintendo definitely has issues, but Matt is flat out wrong lol.

Matt is crazy. The Switch is a very old console at this point. Expecting it to have graphics that would wow people today is actually crazy. On top of that, it's a handheld. And it's still selling very well. Nintendo has pushed gaming tech more than Sony or Microsoft. Those two just put the best chip possible in a console and then they're done. Nintendo did that for three generations and the company was slowly dying because of it. Nintendo shifted their focus to games. They werent going to spend millions on R&D to compete in a losing battle against two of the biggest tech companies in the world, they simply can't. What matters to Nintendo when making a console is if it'll be fun to play games on. And the Wii and Switch have been big success because of it. They make games ppl want to play. Until Starfield, I had pretty much played Switch exclusively for 1-2 years. The Switch is probably my favourite console since the 360. I've been playing games since the C64/NES. At some point, graphics don't do it form me like it used to. With the arrival of HD games, the differences in graphics aren't that big of a deal any more. Does Starfield, for example, look good? Yes, it looks great. But at the same time, in my memory, it doesn't look that different quality wise to what I remember Skyrim or Fallout 4 from looking when i played them for the first time. If you put them side by side, you'll clearly see a big difference. But that's my point. Unless you specifically go into games caring about graphics, thers very little difference. What stands out to me is the styleof the game, the story, the gameplay and whatnot. Put an upscaled Skyrim Infront of me and I'd be completely fine with it. And that's a 12yr old game. The Switch still looks fine to me. And the games Nintendo are releasing are fun as hell to play. I honestly think it's kinda sad to be so obsessed with the quality of the graphics that you cant enjoy the game underneath. You would have thought this graphics obsessed mindset would have died off with the rise of indy games where gameplay has been front and center. If the Switch 2 is less powerful then it could be, i wouldn't really care as long as the price reflects that. I'd still buy it because I like Nintendo's games. Just like I buy the new Xbox, because I like Microsofts games. I actually held off a bit to buy the new Xbox because i felt it wasn't worth the money at first since everything was still coming out on the One X. It wasn't until games started to really suffer being on the One X that I upgraded.

Sony blew it with the Vita, mostly because of those special overpriced memory storage cards and a poor lineup of titles to name a few. Now, whose left? Sure you got Steam Deck/ROG Ally and the upcoming Lenovo Legion gaming deck. But Nintendo still beats them from a price for quality point. Nintendo focused on having the most cutting edge consoles with the SNES as well as the N64, the Game Cube and it ended that strategy with the Wii U. Funny how their most successful hardware never focused on cutting edge or bleeding edge graphics... Gameboy, Wii and Switch dominated and with good reasons for each that aren't purely Mario games. I don't think there would be the landscape of gamers being by far the norm without them actually. Using older, less expensive components in ways that they were never intended with thorough understanding and implementation of everything the hardware can do is what makes them wizards. This is what sells their tech, hands down. The Wii was not cutting edge, but they utilized the hardware of an overclocked GameCube and some IR sensors and instantly created a generationally inclusive device that even my 6 year old actively loves to play today. Graphics are second to the experience. And you only get that chance once. I wish the REST of the gaming industry would accept that.

And yet the PS5 and Xbox are just the same popular franchises being sold over and over, and even more egregious, as Fifa and CoD keep being sold on an yearly basis without any actual improvement. And don't get me started on SKyrim! On the other hand, it takes Nintendo 5 years or more between each major Zelda or Mario release, god knows how many years it'll take for Metroid Prime 4, Pikimin 3 came out 9 years after 2 and 4 came out 10 years later, etc. Yes, it's the same IPs over and over, but aside from Pokemon, Nintendo allows the time they need for each game to be developed. And they do introduce different IPs, but the market doesn't show much interest in them. There's only so many people they can hire and they have to focus on where the demand is, so they're not going to keep introducing new IPs every year and diverge the development teams' manpower to franchises nobody asked for (like Gamefreak did with Pokemon Sw&Sh and Little Town Hero). This guy is holding Nintendo to a different standard than the rest of the industry, where Nintendo needs to be better than everyone else while giving the pass for the rest to be bellow average.

It's a bad day in the gaming industry when you can skydive from the skyislands all the way down to the depths in zelda totk but in order to fas travel to inside a building in starfield you have to sit through 2 cut scenes 2 loading screens and a button prompt 😂. What is Matt talking about with Nintendo consoles not also coming with spec bumps with each iteration? The 3DS came with a higher resolution screen and more powerful chip over the DS. The DS needed a larger spec bump to be able to support 3D games and two screens at once over the GBA. The Wii U ran games at 1080p over the Wii's 480p, which is noticable to anyone who tried to play a Wii on a non-CRT screen. The only one mentioned here that has merit is Gameboy to Gameboy color, as it wasn't that much more powerful to support those colors, but every other example mentioned has quite a bit. All the other points make sense, about Nintendo always having a gimmick with their consoles that usually stifles their graphical performance, but it's not like they used the same chip for any of the transitions that were mentioned in this video.

Spec bump from DS to 3DS is totaly nothing and just a trick to sell old games. Cool you have more power in that chip but if you dont do anything with it, then its just a money grap. There was not that many games that used that 3D thing and you can even look it up that almost every DS game sold more than 3DS games. So people were playing the old games with the new system so the power in those system was just a get money. You did nothing with that power.

DS to the 3DS had some differences, I did enjoy Xenoblade on the 3DS. Also yes PS, Xbox and the PC has better graphics and such, but the handheld market is a bit different and only now have they made the more powerful handheld more accessible. Technology gets better with time, Nintendo did have a habit of sticking in the old ways as they have spent a lot of time to improve on it. I understand Matt on a lot of his points as well like the selling of old games again which other consoles also do just not to the extent that Nintendo does, which is optional. I do believe that Nintendo should make more IP, hardware improvement as well but the price will be a bit harder to swallow especially in third world countries like us.

Nintendo does the bare minimum and calls it innovation when other companies do the same but hundreds of times better and without overcharging when they eventually port it to a new system. Outside of Totk, which I was not as impressed with as Botw, they don't do much in terms of wow factor. I loved metroid dread but I have not thought about that game since I beat it. It was good, that's about it. There are so many other franchises that stay glued into my mind because the devs poured their heart and soul into it. Many nintendo properties feel like they're just holding back any actual work because the fans will buy it for 60 and soon enough 70 dollars every few months. Any price above 40 seems really hard to justify with most nintendo titles for me.

I get where matts coming from. Ive had this stance for awhile myself. Nintendos issue is their a massively profitable company with beloved ips but when they decide to release a new console we the consumers are stuck using typically outdated and under spec'd tech. Where as sony and xbox release a new console with the soul ambition to be one of the most innovative and in demand pieces of tech that so happens to be a console. I have great memories with nintendos games but i honestly gave hoping for something actually cutting edge from them. Ive said it for years but a metroid game with modern graphics would sell consoles all by itself, the remake actually made me hyped to play it sometime. Also nintendo acting like its fanbase never grows up by dumbing down titles is fucking painful.

I do see some of Matt's arguments and agree with some of them. The thing is, the Steam deck and the ROG Ally are not affordable for everyone. Nintendo have NEVER been the forerunners in terms of graphics (not even the NES) but I will tell you what Nintendo do better than most, fun, engaging and affordable gaming. Also Nintendo I feel needs to step up it's game with Backwards Compatibility. The practice of making someone pay for the same game every generation needs to stop. But in saying that, that proves that Nintendo are about fun content and games that people still want to play. The only reason why they still sell 40 y/o games is because they are still fun to play and because their fans wanted them. Is it in the way they wanted? Probably not, but hey, they have it none the less. To sum up Matt's not wrong but he is by no means right, Nintendo have always been about low barrier for entry, fun and affordable gaming.

Nintendo nevere has gone for the most powerful system. They go for whats resonably priced, but everytime they reinvent the way we interact with the games. Now they are just able to do it with 1 system. You had NES/SNES/N64/GC/WIi/wii U merging with GB/GBC/GBA/DS/3DS/ mergin to become to Switch. What Matt is trying to say in When the NES was out, if Sega never released the 16bit Genesis, Nintendo would have never develposed the SNES. Nintendo does milk everyone with their games. How many times have I purchased Mario 2/3, DS, 3DS, Wii, Switch 5x or so. If they dont make the switch 2 backwards compatiple, I believe it will hurt sales as people will see it as Nintendo Abandoning them. IF it isn't backwards compatible, still a hybrid AND on par at least with a PS4/Pro; then I won't buy it. However; if it checks all those boxes (not just two out of three, but all these boxes); then I'm in for at least one more generation. However; if Nintendo is smart; they will make backwards compatibility the standard starting with the current Switch and for at least 2-3 more generations after. Also; while the negative points against Nintendo are 100% valid; compared to Microsoft and Sony (who never cared about the gaming industry, and whose presence in this industry 100% contributed to all the microtransaction, DRM and all Streaming future we are currently worried about); I trust Nintendo more than those two any day of the week. Microsoft is more interested in selling streaming subscriptions and will probably not make another console after this gen and Sony isn't to far behind. Yeah, Nintendo is bad with renting retro games on NSO and other practices; but at least they are passionate about making games as developers themselves and making money from gaming, unlike Sony and Microsoft that just throw the money from their other business endeavors to make money from gaming; and leaving customers with NO options to buy or own games. This is where I would rather have Nintendo NEVER give us all the modern bells and whistles of online gaming; if it means I get to keep my digital and physical purchases.
