John Deere have been acquiring somewhat of a bad reputation as far as reparability goes. You should be careful about that if you ever intend to buy one of their product. The problem is that theses modern machines have a lot of electronics and you may need access when doing repairs to calibrate the machine. John Deere has been refusing to give access to non-certified technicians which basically forces owners to rely solely on John Deere technicians and approved mechanics. The laws are different in the UK, so I don't know how much of that would be an issue for you.

Can you add solar panels to your power grid once all the buildings are built in the new yard? That will give you somewhat of a cheaper cost in the long run and if you are there for 50 years that would be a huge savings too down the road! Even if you can only add one or four at a time to each building it would be a huge plus.

Daniel, I'd seek independent advice about the electricity service situation and paying for peak rates. Maybe you can stick some efficient batteries in a couple containers to trim your yard's peak demand draw from the grid. Ashville may be an attractive collaboration partner for some global battery brand. You already own a genny for power cuts. Add solar panels and charge those storage batteries off-peak to deal with peak hour needs. Don't subsidize the monopoly utility company's profits if you don't need to. What you spend on the consultant will pay you back over the fifty years of lower steadier rates going forward. Don't overpay for peak capacity to recharge EV heavy machinery. It's a total boondoggle right now. The main grid can't even support the amount of increased load if everything were to switch from ICEs to EVs in the near future. Stick with the assumption that heavy gear will continue to use increasingly efficient carbon fuels (perhaps as LNG or LPG) for the near term. There's nothing wrong with lining up limited self-paid charging spots for employee/visitor cars in your parking area.

Regarding the power, you’re missing a big opportunity for renewable energy, I.e solar power and air/ground heat pumps. You have so much space and land that you could install solar panels over the new roofs you’re building and before concreting the yard, you can install ground source heat pumps.

It would be really interesting if we got to find out what the very large power connection is needed for. A typical yard of this size would normally be more than fine with a supply of 400A/278KVA with 250KVA committed, I wonder if there is some battery electric plant or new processing machinery in the pipeline. In any case starting off with a 250KVA supply would mean you wouldn't need to pay for your own substation as the DNO would be able to supply this at 400V, and distribution boards for this size are off the shelf parts available at a fraction of the cost of a 1250A/800KVA board. You'd probably be looking at about 10% of the connection cost, and lower ongoing cost too. If this route was taken it would be smart to put in a second duct to the site boundary so that you could add a further 250KVA supply in future.

My old company had a 800Kv generator because of a power failure lost a lot of data, but the downside was it had to be tested every week and this was done by the security guards during the night. I use to chat with them, it takes just 15 mins for the whole site to be up and running and tested, you have to have your i.T servers up and running within a few seconds so no data loss. Everything you need should be on a control panel, hrs run etc.

Hi Daniel. Feel your pain with the rising cost of the new yard especially with the electrical system costs you shared. One idea that might be worth looking at is keeping the tracks area as a track ballast area but then focus on the concreting the rest of the new yard. This brings two benefits - 1) you have the option to do the additional sections of railway track at a later date when you are not paying out for all the other works you need to do in a limited time before you vacate the current yard. The new track areas are not going to be driven over like you are at the current yard so this will not be as important. 2) the focusing on the concreting of the new yard will help with keeping the new yard a lot cleaner addressing issues you have mentioned with the lack of long term lease in the current yard. This will be great especially when unloading decorative slate and you don’t want to contaminate it with other materials. This wouldn’t prevent you from concreting the track areas at a latter date when you have also looked at the best way to do unloading of containers. Naturally this might also be able to be used to help with the unloading of aggregate allowing versatility of equipment reducing wear and tear on the LH60 Daniel I never thought of you as a hoarder. Having followed you since 2020 I have seen how you have always been looking at the long game. Those purchases / acquisitions have clearly been prudent moves towards kitting out the new yard whilst supporting the expansion of Ashville. The timing of the John Deere loading shovel is brilliant as it also allows you an extra piece of plant to help maintain both the business as usual but also the new yard construction. I wish you and the team all the best for the move across into the new yard but will look forward to seeing the standalone video.

Know how you feel I have a lifelong back injury, I've had 9 MRI's over the last 7 years, nearly crapped myself on the 1st one, now I fall asleep and they have to wake me up, the clue is that in the background of the noise there's a continuous beat, I generally tune into that start tapping my feet and were off. There is another coping mechanism and that's breathing, but while you're counting, breath in on one, count to two in your head and breath out on three and so on. Hope they find out how to fix it. 👍
