I worked there as a security officer and manager in the mid 1990s. It was still called the White House Motel. The apartment on the second floor of the main building is where the owner's son resided. I've been up in that attic in the summer and you're right, it is hot as Hell in there. There used to be a clock tower above the attic. The main lobby was impressive before they ripped it out and turned it into a nightclub. The front desk was huge and there was a fireplace in the lobby too. It's a shame someone couldn't renovate it and make a decent business out of it. In the 60s and 70s, the motel was usually occupied by people travelling to Maryland to gamble. There were slot machines in the bar and lobby, but that was before I worked there. In the 70s, race fans would stay there to attend the car races at Budd's Creek raceway.

My father owned this motel in the early 70'S and it was a thriving business. He built the Bar with the padding, served dinners with great food . The bar was a busy place then, lots of Washington DC came to visit at times. The economy killed this motel. We had a pool then as well.It is a shame to see it this way. I do understand and was notified today the motel is being renovated as close to the 50"s as they can get it. Today is 8/25/2018, we can wait and see!

I remember when the creators of Homestar Runner were explaining why they'd never make a TV version. The TV station funds you & you make money, but they take away all of your creative control & censor stuff. I think Jhonen Vasquez said that about working for Nickelodeon too.
@nola14397 жыл бұрын
MrAkihiros well technically what he's doing is illegal. They don't enforce it, but abandoned places are still owned by people. The deed for the land doesn't just expire when the business goes down. So this is absolutely considered trespassing. Even if it's been foreclosed, the government still owns it. They won't enforce it on KZbin and such social media sites, but if you were to make a commercialized TV show with sponsors, chances are you couldn't get away with doing illegal things as the premise of the show, even if they're harmless unenforced things.
@thelittlepinkdino2347 жыл бұрын

You're not going to believe this but I actually stayed there sometime in the late 70s or early 80s. It was still American owned then. I don't remember a whole lot about it except the diner that was in the motel was cheap and it used to have screen doors on it. It's funny what a person will remember when they see something like this about someplace they've been. I remember how unusual the lobby was for this type of place. Old neon lit court motels never had a grand lobby, that's why this one stood out for me. Haunted? You bet it's haunted. There is not a motel in existence that someone has not died in. I've stayed in motels that housekeepers have went in to clean a room and found a guy dead or in the last case this girl ODd on pills because she was facing time in prison. Her boyfriend found her, they were 2 doors down from me. I had a bit of a strange experience that went along with that, so yes, motels are haunted and I'm sure that one was no exception. But thanks for taking me back.

It's sometimes difficult to find the source of unknown noises in abandoned places. Maybe it was "the wind" or maybe it was an animal, or maybe it was another person, or maybe it was something paranormal.

+Jason Phillips Paranormal, seriously? Paranormal is just wild imagination. If you are alone in an old and abandoned place anything can spook you. It is usually just the wind or you are disturbing objects and the building that hasn't been touched in years. Animals and squatters are also likely since I've seen a lot of birds and animals in places with open windows and doors. Not to mention it is probably very common for homeless people, drug addicts, or anyone looking for a place to hide to take advantage of abandon buildings for shelter or a place to not be found. This spoooooky ghost shit needs to stop.
@abandonedexploration44959 жыл бұрын
milkyways u sound like an idiot bc obviously Paranormal teams have evidence of haunted locations that they have investigated. Yea there is some things that can debunked and explained but then there are those places with high paranormal activity. So go tell your "theory" to The Ghost adventures crew or Taps or any paranormal team, also u can come with me to some of the haunted places that I've been to with experiences and evidence that can't be debunked .

@thisisdanbell , I stayed at this Motel close to 20 years ago driving back from Florida with my family. It was not a nice motel back then. (Pretty scary, actually.) You're my new favorite exploration youtuber, Dan. I've bipped around a few channels, but yours is the most interesting and LEAST SHAKYCAM of all I've found. :) I like being able to recognize what I see without having to pause the video and try to make out what's through that motion blur. Also enjoying your choice to narrate rather than comment on the spot. Kinda weeds out heavy breathing and sniffling and other obnoxious noises.

Boy I miss these kind of videos from Dan. There is plenty of urbex out there but NO ONE does it like Dan. It's the wind ambiance added to the videos, slow movement and panning of the camera. Literally no one has picked up on that ambiance effect that makes these so surreal.

I'm really surprised that no one else has ever made the connection of the chandelier in the main section of the motel, and the box of crystal bobbles in the attic (that go with it). Worth quite a bit of money if it were cleaned and put back together (which isn't difficult). Proof that thieves and vandals are stupid.

There used to be a similar hotel outside of Marfa, TX. Allegely built in the 1940s and in business until 1966. The whole place looked like the people just up & left. Rooms were fully furnished and the sheets were still on the beds. There were even brochures in the lobby, still. Very eerie cause the place was along a very deserted stretch of highway 90 heading to Big Bend. The sand and dust seemed to act as a natural mumifier for all the old stuff. As far as I know the place was torn down as of 2002. It even had a sand filled pool in the courtyard.

I just found your channel and subscribed, very good video. I had an unusual motel experience several years ago. I was doing a bicycle tour and came to the tiny town of Mt. Dora, NM, three or four houses well off the road and a six unit motel between the road and railroad tracks. The motel looked ready for guests but not a soul around it. A storm was approaching so I was glad to find shelter. The office was locked but none of the rooms. No water or electric so I rolled my sleeping bag out on a bed, spent the night and rode on the next morning, still without ever seeing a soul.

Considering legal concealed carry is pretty much nonexistant in MD, and the police would immediately assume he's carrying for offensive purposes rather than defensive on the offchance he got caught, pepper spray is generally a smarter choice in this type of urbex situation. I'm almost positive he carries pepper spray (or something similar) for those reasons.

Dan Bell, I love your videos. The almost liveable quality of this motel reminded me of one I stayed at when I visited my hometown on Long Island back in 1992. I think I may have been the only guest at the time. The owner was quite friendly i told him i missed Long Island and intended to visit until i got a job in Georgia. He gave me the me the room right next to the office. When I took a shower I felt very wary because the walls attached to the office. Not scared though. When I was leaving he told me two days later he told me to come back, even if I didn't have enough money. He said it would be on him. I never did go back. Years later I spent plenty of time in hotels, some really bad places. Life is not always a straightforward path, that's what I'm reminded of with some of your videos. Intriguing places. They hold memories don't they?
