5k is no small feat. Especially going from non-runner to 5k runner. For me it was the biggest accomplishment as a runner. And I just finished my first marathon two days ago. The marathon as an event is certainly harder on muscles and the Cardiovascular system, but the 5k was a bigger accomplishment. Going from walker to runner was a difference in type. Going from half to marathoner was just a difference in amount.

I’m 37 and just ran my first race yesterday (four miles) and did a run/walk combo the whole way. I I haven’t done much hill work so could only jog a small amount up the one in yesterday’s race. I finished the race in just under 51 minutes (could have shaved off a few seconds had I been more observant and seen the finish area sooner but instead I didn’t notice the clocks and mat at first so walked through the finish). Gym was one of my least favorite classes growing up. At my schools, it was mostly sports-focused and I’m not a big sport person. I like casual shooting basketball hoops and kicking a ball around but am not good with playing the actual games. I also love dancing and hula hooping yet we didn’t do much of those in gym. I didn’t even learn to properly hoop around my waist until I was an adult. I also hate jogging in gym class and usually walked the mile when we had to do that (would have been nice if my teacher played music more in gym class too). I’ve been overweight for much of my life so jogging and whatnot makes me self conscious. I am glad that I decided to do a reduction surgery over the summer as I don’t have to double or triple up on bras anymore. That makes exercising worse.

Hoping this will be the start of a wonderful, adventurous and motivational journey for Anne-Marie. At the tender age of 50 my wife entered me for a 5k run, as luck had it a parkrun had just started up locally so we gave it a few weeks to build up the courage to go and try to run as a tester for the forthcoming 5k finishing in 38 minutes 13 years later and after the trauma of recently undergoing treatment for throat cancer I am about to run my 500th. Running and parkrun has taken us to places we would never have thought to visit, races over distances up to marathon and helped us share unforgettable moments together and meet so many inspirational people ( not least my wife who is now knocking out 25 minute 5k’s for fun and recently achieved a GFA marathon time smashing sub 4 hours. Keep it going, stay positive and smile through the bad days and enjoy, well done.

Brilliant! Well done Harry and GB Louise for the fantastic support, training, and encouragement given to Ami, and most importantly, a massive well done to Ami for getting to this stage now. I remember being in a similar situation, doing couch 2 5k on my own, my first parkrun was also my goal, and to do it sub 30 minutes was such a buzz, and a moment to be proud of. I run 3-4x a week now, part of a club, join races, and my 5k PB time is now 22m07s since i started in May 2022. Fantastic achievement, i assume Ami has already completed the parkrun by now (unsure when these videos are filmed), however, i am thoroughly looking forward to watching the video. Keep up the hard work Ami, my fellow runner, you have my utmost support!!

Harry you are a legend and maybe don’t appreciate how much all your encouragement helps people. I am a returning runner and could easily give up, but using the 10% rule and walk breaks helps so much! Following from across the pond in lovely California. Ami, you seem like a natural. What no one told me when I started running in my 30's is how there is a hump and once you get over it, the maintenance is easy.
