Divinatory systems have been used for thousands of years as a source of help and direction to people wishing to resolve situations of personal uncertainty. Jung used the I Ching for 30 years before he met Richard Wilhelm and found confirmation of its usefulness in Wilhelm’s translation of The Secret of the Golden Flower. We explore the value of divination through the I Ching and the Tarot, and link this to the concept of a unified field that can facilitate a healing relationship with the Self.
The dream:
I’m sitting on a concrete ledge. A few feet below is mud. A loved, beaded bracelet slips off into the mud and begins to sink. I know I cannot reach it. The feeling of anger and frustration toward myself and the situation distracts me for so long that when I regain clarity I realize it’s late, and I am far from home. I also become aware of a family of brown bears below, a mother and two cubs, father some distance away. The need to get away from the bears and find a safe place to sleep takes over. I look behind me into a beautiful, green grassy space and see a metal fenced off area about the size of a basketball court. A cage with no roof! I run to it for safety, whilst the bears meander calmly in the distance. Although they appear peaceful, I know that if parents’ protective instincts kick in then I’m in danger. I find the gate to the cage and let myself in, questioning if bears can climb the fence. I’m terrified they’ll see and hear me, so resist the urge to move fast. I quietly, slowly slide the lock on the gate across. Feeling safe and relieved, I look around for somewhere to lie down. It’s all very muddy, which surprisingly doesn’t faze me. I find a spot and lie down, settling into the soft mud, although when I roll over I see that I have lain down next to huge, twelve-foot-tall gorilla, which I initially think is a bear who is asleep but rolling over and toward me, about to land on me! My final thought before waking is if that rolls onto me I will never get away. How did I not notice it was there?

I don't know about divination but tarot is an amazing tool for shadow work. I even got conscience about animus because of it! My unconscious communicates to me through the cards, especially if you find the right deck with the kind of images in the same wavelength as your unconscious. It is like smelling the right perfume, you just know deep down when you find the right images. But it is not about liking the images, it is hard to explain...

Having worked with the Tarot for over 30 years (once an extremely popular/successful reader) I wholeheartedly agree with the observation that there is a meeting of subconscious minds which "bounces off" an archetypal image (the mirror) between them to awaken intuition. However, this "mundane" aspect cannot be the only key to a surprising interpretation. (But it is definitely the crank handle that starts the psychic process). I have several recorded instances where my pronouncements, during consultation, were greeted with sheer disbelief yet proved devastatingly accurate a short while afterwards. That kind of knowledge always occurred to me completely "out of the blue". I never knew where it came from though I trusted my "intuition" enough to spell it out. Truly there is something strange and wonderful surrounding these systems so my advice would simply be: "Start your engines. Enjoy the ride." Regrettably, many people fear the unknown. The profane, superstitious and dogmatic will still persecute you for working with the "devil's tools". Thus a true psychic can lead a lonely life.

Min. 23.44 About the changing lines on In ching, these lines represent the "old yang" corresponding to 9 and the "old yin" corresponding to 6. You can see them as the culmination of expansion or contraction, and for this reason, they can't be sustained, so they change and transform the hexagram into a new one. They're crucial for reading the hexagram since they provide more insight and comments about the depicted situation. Some interpreters only read the changing line.

Approx. @23:08 Changing lines only exist when the "answer" is not straightforward. One knows whether they can have a second hexagram by the numbers generated during the throwing of the coins/sticks. Traditionally, there are rituals associated with consulting the I Ching that requires the person to respect its sanctity, which I don't think was mentioned here and that I feel is absent with things like an I Ching app.

I recently uploaded four videos that put the I Ching and Tarot together in a process similar to active imagination. This podcast has been helpful in helping me design and conceptualize quite a bit of my work.

Really interesting discussion. Probabilistically speaking, when you cast the I Ching using the coin method. There is only a 25% chance you will read 1 hexagram. 75% of time you will get at least 1 old yin or old yang line (a changing line) that will transform the hexagram.

This dream has a lot of layers...great episode! I wondered a few things...could the muddy caged sleeping area be a sign for the site of her intimate relationship with the "Guerilla"? There's something there about being in a physical relationship with a person that is highly sexual or bedroom dominated but not fulfilling otherwise so it doesn't end up being much. The bed is a cage in the middle of a beautiful field. The physical relationship is depraving her of less muddy possibilities...

The 20 major arcana of the Coleman Smith tarot images, are the same as the first twenty Hexagrams, and the twenty days of the Maya and others. The lesser tarot is the 36 decans, and the twelve sun signs. The hexagrams 21- 56 are the 36 decans known in many places, Hindu, Japanese, and Egyptian. The descriptors are not random and pliable, they are provable, trackable, and kept historically for thousands of years. The last 8 hexagrams are the eight masters. The 20 days, were globally known, and the I-Ching is actually proof of it. Today is hexagram # 17. these cannot be arbitrarily assigned meanings, that seem comfortable, anymore than we can assign random functions of the 20 standard amino acids. This simple and known point about the I-Ching is not talked about by anyone outside the actual peer group. Academia has not mentioned it, so we must assume they do not know.

I like the idea of the I Ching as a system that uses randomness to unlock angles on a situation that one might not otherwise explore (because of established thought patterns). However, uncritically believing that this system has divinatory properties opens the door to all sorts of other irrational beliefs and exploitation of such beliefs by cults and quacks. Believers usually talk about a handful of cases where the I Ching was "right" (without even discussing the a priori probability of the event in question, BTW), but fail to report the thousands of times when the results were wrong or simply inconsequential. Besides, if the I Ching is divinatory, then consulting it N times in a row on the same question should give you the same results. It doesn't, anymore than throwing 2 dice N times in a row gives you the same outcome. I'm sure there is an "explanation" for this :D If you are serious about the divinatory component, then you need to get some good statisticians on board to show that there is more than pareidolia, merely seeing patterns in random data.
