Hi all! Just wanted to clarify that 1. getting covid no doubt sucks and I hope everyone stays safe and healthy and responsible 2. we both absolutely know the severity of it and that you can get it more than once and weren't insinuating that we're invincible or wishing it on ourselves/loved ones for the sake of getting it over with 3. The intention was to be transparent about having it and how thankful I am for vaccinations, boosters and just plain science in general 4. though we were trying to offer some lightheartedness around the serious subject we’ll make sure we consider more deeply how this could be interpreted to others that haven’t had as easy a time. Thank you for your feedback! Also, does anyone have any new reality program recommendations? I need new suggestions to aid in my schoolwork procrastination!
@rc83303 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the clarification and being willing to take a beat to think about the implications of how you were addressing the bigger issue of getting sick with this type of virus. I am so happy you are doing well. At the same time, many people are dying as the US hits new records in this pandemic. There are also vaccinated people who do not do as well. There are those who cannot get vaccinated and are immunocompromised too, so when I first heard the podcast I was a bit disappointed in the "get it and get it over with" approach you and Mamrie took. I understand why that is tempting, but if we all took that approach, the amount of deaths and hospitalizations would be catastrophic. Hope to see you and Mamrie together again soon. Stay safe.

@@rc8330 no THANK YOU for your honest feedback! The severity of Covid is something Mamrie and I understand - we’ve managed to avoid it for this long bc we respect the social rules and science! We take great pride in our podcast being a silly, safe space for listeners and were only trying to keep things light with respect to everything we read/experience that is not necessarily that way. While hopefully encouraging the message of the positive effects of vaccines/boosters. But totally understand the frustration and will absolutely be more conscious of how we talk about things like this in the future! We’ll stick to more critter talk moving forward! 🙃❤️

We need to talk about what is happening in the world, even on podcasts meant to make us as happy as yours does. I think this could also be a great reminder for all of us. There is no playbook for this pandemic even after a couple of years in it. I am so tired of COVID. I want a reason to feel like I am going back to normal. I want it to be over. It is very easy to fall into talking about it in ways that downplay it because it is just so overwhelming and that's okay. You both are amazing and we all know you take it seriously. Veterinarian here: if you insert an organ with different DNA that does not affect possible offspring. Sperm- and egg cells are made with the DNA present in the ovaria or testicles, the DNA in the organ will stay in that organ and won't travel around the body or something because it's inside the cells. Hope this clarifies for anyone wondering after the pig heart story :)

Curious to know for a while now, esp after hearing the first bit of this episode: It seems like the people who know someone who's developed Long COVID (myself included) are the ones most afraid of catching it, no matter how asymptomatic it might feel initially. My understanding is that it hasn't been ruled out for asymptomatic and/or fully vaxxed individuals to develop LC - with any variant - weeks or months after testing positive. That said, does anyone here feel like they're slowly getting better after having LC for a while? Would love to know what's been helping you recover if so!! Truly asking for a friend.

because pigs don't have the same life expectancy as us, does that mean the heart will die on the pig life span or the human's life span? I'm curious
@TheFeather473 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting....cells die for many reasons but the big driver for aging is the shortening of telomeres at the end of our chromosomes...cells die all the time and are replaced...I would assume the cells in the pig's heart would replicate using their own chromosomes....fascinating question
@ashleyarvay3 жыл бұрын
@@TheFeather47 so does that mean eventually the pigs heart would become human? Per say? As the cells regenerate would they in turn mutate, or are the cell make up of muscle fibers similar being both are mammals?
@jemmamay22183 жыл бұрын
Hey Grace and Mamrie! I’m a scientist finishing my PhD in veterinary microbiology and wanted to give some insight into your pig heart transplant hypotheses. An organ transplant does not change the DNA inside any of the cells in your body. This means that the sperm and egg cells necessary to produce offspring* are also unchanged by the transplant. Therefore, any resulting offspring would still be half you, half your partner. (*Caveats here include the fact that we can fuse egg cells together and we have the ability to produce clones from one “parent”, although that’s ethically dicey in humans). Consider the fact that every plant and animal product you have ever consumed also contained DNA specific to that organism - if your cells changed because you had eaten a salad, we might all look like Elphaba from Wicked and have the ability to photosynthesise! Similarly, consuming genetically modified plant or animal products cannot fundamentally change your DNA because your DNA simply does not change in response to every other bit of DNA you encounter. There are few ways to modify the DNA in your cells (radiation, chemical mutation, removal of individual cells and adding or removing genes as seen in the pig heart!) but adding “foreign” DNA into your body (be that through pig heart transplants, eating literally any food or you poke yourself with a carrot?) does not change your DNA, or the DNA in the cells that could eventually produce offspring. Idk if that was interesting - I enjoyed your theorising re a part human part pig child, but had to say this wouldn’t be the case here, particularly when cutting edge and world-changing scientific advancements like these often are misunderstood and then feared rather than celebrated. Get well soon, Grace! Mamrie, I hope you managed to avoid Ms Rona!
