Great advice, I've realised that the 20 min euphoria is not worth the 2-3 days of absolute crippling anxiety and feeling like s**t!

It was walking into a grocery store and smelling the liquor aisle across the store about six weeks inn that i finally admitted to myself i had a problem. . 3 years later still no whiskey i will on occasion sit in front of the liquor store oh 2 or 3 minutes.... i pause think about the consequences and then go home and do it sober. It's nice being sober a struggle at times but it is easier now then ever. I'm 47 drank for 20yrs AA and a good therapist. Have a great day thumbs up stay awesome everyone.

yep this is definitely me, "how am I going to live without the buzz"... but I'm slowly learning that it's not worth it because I know everything will feel much worse afterwards ! and that every craving I get is because I consumed alcohol in the first place, not because I don't drink. If I stop the cycle I won't have to feel the itch ever again

Thank you Annie, you’ve turned this 20 years long drinker into a teetotaler! I believe you saved my life. I tried everything and everything failed until I found your podcast and book. I give a copy of your book to anyone who mentions they want to stop or cut back. Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart. I have a real life now.

if i could just get back to pre covid, i could have one with dinner, or whatever, and get that first buzz, and then chill back, but covid and other stressors from all that ended up sending me into a ridiculous nightly habit that i finally just broke for 20 days. Don't plan on stopping fully but holy shit, i can't believe what i did to myself this last few years.
@jdssurf2 жыл бұрын
but yeah, i miss getting the initial buzz, need something else that gives me a healthy head change for when i play my instruments and such. I know ppl say just smoke weed but eh, too different. It's not healthy either, though much better than alcohol.

You don't have to decide your entire journey now. Focus on how you want to feel.

Thank you. I have thoughts of drinking but it's not worth it. My body or mind. I traded my wild oats for quaker oats & I'm ok with that. I accept I've changed & I welcome it. I need to feel the best as I can & drunk is not it.

Yip, this is me! Had a lot of ‘life’ thrown at me past couple of years so the ‘numb’ aspect is something I’m always chasing, always. But these problems are definitely worse after that ‘buzz’, completely.

This is so fascinating to re-watch now that I've started drinking Kava and other adaptogen drinks. A criticism of them is that the 'buzz' of these new drinks doesn't last long (maybe 20 minutes) but apparently alcohol's buzz is the same length. What happens afterward is VERY different. After kava, I feel relaxed but not itching for another. The science is sketchy at this point but I'd love to get your take on those at some point as well! Thanks for all your insight, Annie!

That was so helpful, thank you! Missing the buzz was my biggest concern about not drinking. Your answer helped me quantify what I'd actually be missing: 20 minutes of feel good while my brain is hit with a sledge hammer - metaphorically of course, but wow! That knocked the concern right out of me.

Euphoria/buzz followed by anxiety? Never noticed it. I just get sleepy. I can't drink enough to get drunk, because I fall asleep. It's probably a function of aging. When I was younger, I would wake the next morning with the room spinning. But I can't do that now.
