When I was 4 years old my dad gave me a tin tag off of a roll of barbed wire that had a thin wire coming off of it. Imagine a dogtag with a length of wire on it. I was so proud of it that at the end of day before I went to bed I wanted to put the tag somewhere special so I wouldn't lose it. I looked high and low and voila I saw the perfect spot, an electrical outlet. I shoved the wire in each of the prongs and was immediately treated to quite the lights show. It really looked like I was welding in my bedroom, on my bed. I was in shock and froze but my dad came quickly, grabbed my shirt and pulled me back. I wasn't shocked much because the current was going through the wire. The outlet was melted. My parents put outlet caps on all the outlets in my bedroom after that but really I didn't need them lol. The best part is today I'm an electrician coming up on 20 years in the trade. Of course that story comes up whenever the topic of electrical around the house is discussed lol.

Good tips but a few things I would change up. Only use those adhesive cabinet locks if you can’t use the ones that drill into the door frame and door. Little ones will constantly be rattling them and trying to get in. Also, it only takes one adult who doesn’t know you have it installed and that adhesive thing will come off. You’re better off installing the ones that you use small screws to put in and you have to slightly press down to release the latch if the door frame allows you to install it. Also, I would not put that janky mesh barrier at the top of my stairs. It looks weak and super easy to open and I can guarantee the kid will eventually figure out how to use it. Little kids are like solid snake and are constantly being more clever than you think! Or an older kid, like a three year old could easily open it and leave it open and there goes little Kelly down the stairs. We have the summer infant deluxe and it’s stood the test of time for three kids banging on it from age 9 months and older like a riot at Attica. I’m surprised they didn’t mention about your hot water temp settings. Also, make sure you don’t have long pull cords in your blinds. Put some covers over your stove top knobs

My son was a climber so I just put his mattress on the ground. I’ve been reading up on lead in older homes . One needs to test the paint, but also dirt in yard, and the water. Lead is air, water, dirt. It’s in clothes, ceramics, food, vintage toys. It’s not just your house to worry about. It’s his cousins home, the neighbors home . His school.. I saw a video of a child who had lead poisoning: it’s frightening . Don’t know how accurate these figures are, but a public health official said in Michigan, 1 in 3 kids are positive for lead

A lot of houses built in the sixties, seventies, and early eighties where built with aluminum wiring. This old house has never discussed this.

In the house shown, it was copper wiring. At least for the outlet in the nursery. If it were aluminum it would be a silvery color. A silver color could also include tinned copper wiring, commonly used before the 1950s, and sometimes mistaken for aluminum. Tinned copper will have a tar/asphalt coated cloth braid with rubber insulated conductors, aluminum will almost always be the thermoplastic sheathing that we're all familiar with today. Aluminum will also be 12awg for 15 amps, and 10awg for 20 amps, because it's less of a conductor so they have to size it heavier than copper for the same load. Aluminum wiring will also have AL, ALUM, or ALUMINUM printed or embossed along the sheathing, easily seen in attics, basements and crawlspaces. Aluminum was common from 1965 to about 1973, but was sometimes used until the late 70s or even the 80s. because aluminum was never recalled dispite the many home fires it caused, and existing stock was permitted to be used. I've ran into it a handful of times and it was always from the late 60s to early 70s.

Tamper-resistant outlets are just terrible. Half of the time when I'm trying to plug something in legitimately they prevent me from doing so.

That’s good though, right? If you, an adult, have trouble getting past the tamper resistances, you should have good piece of mind that a child can’t get past them either.

There's one brand that makes it difficult, because they expect a ground pin, which is what unlatches the upper two shutters. Then there's the other brand that knows not every plug will have a Grounding pin. Then there's my mom, who thinks she's plugging things in at a straight angle, when in reality she's off by 5°~15°

Tamper resistant outlets are just awful, the design is so unrefined. You have to forcefully jam plugs in you feel like it’s going to break, just all around bad at this point. My grandmother had an addition put on her house, she is in her mid 80s and it had all tamper resistant outlets put in and she is unable to use them. She doesn’t have the strength to put that much pressure on them due to arthritis. Just an awful design.

I was a new Dad and the time I decided to " child proof" my three story home my daughter was walking at 9 months. She learn to crawl up and down the stairs and mastered climbing out here crib. It's a waste of times and money. I feel she learned more about the house and I'm glad I wasn't a helicopter dad. She's 10 and in gymnastics and coming up to her black belt test in martial arts .All is good so don't be those overly protective parents. Kids need to learn what is safe by instruction and not by locking down your home.
