Think about how unlikely this video would blow up, 9 minutes of a guy in a wheelchair rapping over an acoustic guitar about mental health. He did this A) because it was cathartic to document the agony he experienced and B) to provide comfort to those suffering in silence, that they are not alone (he has stated this many times). It's so authentic that it took off, almost everyone can relate at some level.

There’s a line in his lyrics - at the end (before the spoken words) - “inspire the meek to be strong” which answers a part of why he put himself ‘out there’ actually. So not just for himself.

The artist always talks about himself, but at the same time gives the world something that the world needs most. And this is not always nice and convenient - sometimes we need a shake-up, discomfort. We are more understanding about this in literature or painting. Although I remember that when I first came across Picasso’s Guernica, I also couldn’t understand why it was necessary to paint this way, and not beautifully, colorfully and clearly. Now I consider this one of the brilliant works that forever changed the world of painting. Among the many admiring reviews of Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, there will always be people writing “I read the first page - it’s terrible, too many errors, where is the editor looking.” I'm glad that for this song you and I were able to go beyond this first page. It seems to me that this is a very precisely calibrated work that brings us exactly to the state that the author intended. The melody here is more likely to place accents, showing the two sides of the coin in a slightly different way, but without dragging attention to itself. And damn, the way Ren gradually reveals these two sides is insanely cool. My sympathies shifted from one side to the other and the overall impression of the song changed several times. There are so many interesting solutions here, so many topics to think about! A very interesting artist, definitely worth attention. Thanks for your reaction.

I wholeheartedly agree with you 100% that Ren’s backstory should not be important when deciding if you like his music or not. Ren’s music needs to stand on its own merit, which I do believe it does. And his backstory and his willingness to share so much of his personal life & ongoing struggles with his fans just makes him all that more loved. It is because of his character that he will forever have a loyal fanbase.

Yes, it does stand on its own. Vast majority of the thousands of Hi Ren reactors go into it blind, and love it. Knowing the backstory just gives it even more meaning, including his some of his other songs. But his stuff is incredible without that knowledge.

'Hi Ren' is not music you listen to every day. It is a work of art. It is a testimonial of sort based on real life experience. It is an amazing individual performance; Ren sings, raps, plays the guitar throughout, acts out the various characters and provides a heart felt performance. I think altogether that is what throws off many people. The same goes for 'Tale of Jenny and Screech' and 'Money game 3'. They are stories performed by an amazing individual. I do appreciate the fact you tried 'Hi Ren' again, Roscoe. I think you are absolutely correct in your interpretation of what the ultimate meaning is of the piece. I believe, Ren did this for himself. I believe he did not expect it to be so powerfully received. It was as much as shock for him as anyone else. He has aluded to this in interviews after the fact. I challenge you to react to 'Tale of Jenny and Screech (full)'. You will be shocked but mostly right at the very end where the story is resolved. You then sit there and think-holy hell that was a ride. 'Money Game 1, 2 and 3' are similar. However, the first two are actually sung/rapped; they provide a basis for understanding the imagery and content in 'Money Game 3'. The latter is a 09:19 long video just like 'Hi ren' but well worth experiencing it till the end.

There is a lot of music in this world today that helps us to shut off our minds. A lot of popular music does this. The special thing about Ren’s music is that it forces the mind to wake up and pay attention. Most of Ren’s music is meant to be uncomfortable because he sings and raps about the wrongs of the world and mental illness. He wants us to think so that we change. We as a whole can make this world better but human selfishness gets in the way. I am glad you gave this song a second chance, because you would have missed out on something that is worthy of being seen. 💜

Great reaction. So glad you gave it another try. I understand where you're coming from saying it was more for Ren then for the listener. That may be true from your perspective but there are many of us with mental illnesses and/or chronic health issues that have been living in the dark with little to no hope, feeling misunderstood, and in many cases, feeling forgotten about and to those of us like that, this song has a healing power unlike any I and many of us have ever felt. I've felt it myself as tears streamed down my face during the hope part and I was left in awe by the end. I've also seen it lift other reactors from the dark and some that cried but couldn't figure out exactly why it made them so emotional. Then, as we each took our journeys through more of his music and found out how diverse he is & that he has even more songs that we connect with and find healing..whether he's making us laugh, cry, or whatever. Many of us have found others in the comments that we relate to or in his fan pages on Facebook which makes us feel like we're not alone in our struggles. The Renegades are one of the best fanbases you'll find imo. Welcome to the team. You got a sub from me. I look forward to more. ✌️&❤️

Beyond the deep message, also think about his musical ability in this. The hard almost grinding chords mixed with the soft ones, showing what is to come in the lyrics. The different pace of the playing for each character, while rapping seamlessly on top of it. All while literally acting out the movements and characters. AND ALL THAT LIVE! ONE TAKE! Notice the mic on his collar. The performance is a masterpiece. Also notice the lights and when they are blinking when bad Ren is present.

Likewise. I started and stopped the first time or two and then I watched it all the way through. And I sobbed. And I went on to watch it again , and again- literally every day , at least once. And I cried, I sobbed, I chuckled, and each time I watched it I felt less anxiety and more sheer amazement and awe… because I felt seen, heard , understood- by Ren, who I had never met,let alone heard of before. I take my time with his songs because they are SO much more than songs. And while I often feel utterly broken at first I somehow feel much less so afterwards.

Most reactors eye roll for the first 20-30 seconds and you can actually see them thinking ..."crap, this is 9 minutes long". Ren makes a lot of 1 take videos and I think the greatest compliment you could give him is it made you think. He often goes deep, or dark and can make you cry but he also has funny and naughty that makes you laugh. He is the proverbial box of chocolates.. I would suggest Crutch... with Bibi. I immediately connected with this the first time I experienced it. Maybe it was the timing. I'd seen 'Hi Ren' in my feed for a while, then I decided to take a listen. Glad I did. It resonated deeply with me. The experience perfectly describes, for me personally, just how insidious, menacing and, obnoxious, that inner voice can be. The thing is, that inner voice thinks it's protecting you, keeping you safe. In reality, it's keeping you stuck. This performance is at times chaotic and disjointed, just as the dialogue with the inner voice can be. And as Ren expressed, it's a dance, a balancing act. I'm attempting to come to grips with my own stuff, instead of pushing it down, trying to pretend it doesn't exist. 'Cause that's exhausting! I appreciate this because it's opened up a dialogue between people in a time of divisiveness. Oy, that sounds like such a corny Hallmark card, eh? 😂I remember spending a good part of a day watching reaction videos and other people's perspective. I've gone down the Ren path, and I enjoy most of what he's created. He puts it all out there. He's introspective and makes you think. He puts forth critiques, and admits he doesn't have the answers/solutions, turning the mirror on ourselves for accountability and how we individually contribute to the muck and the mire. He also pokes fun at himself and can be mischievous and naughty. I appreciate that! 😁

There is so much more to Ren's art and performance abilities than the two songs you've listened to. He produces all of his own music (including making beats) and most of his videos are one-takes. Some of his work is incredibly beautiful, as you've seen with "Chalk Outlines," but some is super good, fun, and upbeat. Some are a mixture of message and music. Here are some I think you should explore next: "How to be Me" (hauntingly beautiful), "Money Game" (parts 1, 2 and 3), "Hunger" (incredible rapping), "Murderer" (both the video and the live version - each are incredibly different) and listen to his busking. To really see something phenomenal, "Jenny's Tale", "Screech's Tale", and "Violet's Tale" - masterpieces of performance art - live and one takes...you haven't ever seen anything like it, I'd guarantee it!

he was treated for psychosis before his real illness of limes disease was discovered. This took years, all the while the lime disease was taking its toll on his body and brain. His sharing of what we all have an Angel and a devil in our mind pulling one way then the other, this can be overwhelming when a mental illness is taking a hold. As one reviewer said, “this is an opera, not just a song”.

First time I heard this was January, 2023. It came up in my recommendations... I guess because I watch a lot of busking stuff and maybe I've seen Ren before playing on the street? Dunno. But I watched it with half attention while I worked.... I knew I needed to see it again but knew I needed it to be a focused viewing. I have a kid, and heard some language on the first viewing, so had to have quiet, private time to see this again.... And fell in love with it when I finally did. This isn't a one and done viewing, everything this man puts out is worth multiple listens where you start to see the Ren-iverse pull together. Modern day musical genius with a flair for the visual too.

First time seeing your channel. You are a very passionate and expressive person. I really liked the fact that you turned Ren off in the first 30 seconds or so the first time. It added to the suspense this time around and I was all in for the ride knowing what the end result was going to be. Yeah your are entertaining to watch as a person and as a reactor so yeah. Sub here and check out Money Game 3 if you want another 9 minute mini drama master piece. Looking forward to more Ren reactions from you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Exactly! Money Game 3 is a masterpiece! Ren is a poet - a lyrical genius! Not to mention, he writes all his own music, drops all his own beats, is a phenomenal guitar and piano player (all self-taught btw!) and has an amazing voice! To really hear his beautiful voice, you need to listen to him busking with his old band, "The Big Push" singing "I Shot The Sheriff, Road To Zion mash up" and "War Pigs". These truly show the amazing range of Ren's voice! Also, people tend to forget that most of his songs are done live - which truly sets him apart from other musicians! "Crutch" is one of my favorites! The first time I watched the video, I was blown away by Ren's vocals! The cinematography is breathtaking as well. It literally gave me chills!

Even though Money Game pt 3 is a masterpiece on it’s own, you should definitely watch all three Money Games in order. There is so much in the first 2 parts, that is tied together in pt 3. It will not give you the full insight without them.

If you loved "Chalk Outlines" you must react to "Crutch". It was done at the height of Ren's illness and is amazing. It's hauntingly beautiful and the cinematography is breathtaking! The fact that it was done with zero budget will blow your mind. Ren's vocals in it will surprise you. Trust me, you'll want to react to it!

Part of the genius and beauty of this song is very much the same as “chalk outlines “. They are one take videos. Everytime anything went wrong, anytime he made any mistake… they started from the top until it was seamless, live, one take perfection.(many of his video are one take videos, he says he loves the challenge)

This was a bit ago now so it doesn't even matter, but when it comes to knowing his story is not just about him having lyme disease. It's about his insane journey where he was chronically misdiagnosed and subjected to medications and treatments that actually put him in a state of psychosis. It's an insane story.

I didn't see your initial reaction to this piece of art. I'm glad you revisited the song and I saw this reaction. Ren covers many hard topics to discuss in his songs. However, and this is the point I took from your thoughts, is he is doing it for himself. He is letting his demons be known because it is cathartic to him. When he released this video I think he had maybe 300k followers. I don't think he anticipated this video was going to be seen by millions. It was him letting out frustrations from his life. Being signed by Sony and starting a music career at 20 years old then becoming extremely ill which caused Sony to drop him. He couldn't finish the project. Following that were years of misdiagnoses of what ailed him. He's 33 now. He released this song just before going to Canada to have treatments for 5 days a week to help his health after stem cell treatments in the states which helped him and someone finally figuring out it was Lyme disease. Lyme disease left to its own devices will ravage the body and mind. Much of his music speaks of the years of frustration he experienced. A majority of his hip hop/rap album he just released was written in the last few years and he was putting it out because he, as you said, he wanted to get it out there for him. To know that he could do it while battling illness. Again, I certainly don't think when he made this video it would lead to the views, followers, and his album debuting #1 on the UK charts. For additional context of what Ren has been doing during 2023- here's a quick short of his typical day in Canada: kzbin.infoW6jKUMTlfW4 Subbed not because you liked the song after the second viewing and giving it a chance while still not liking some parts. Subbed because why you decided to give it a second chance.

Glad you came back and gave this another chance. I tell everyone I send it to that they need to be in an introspective, but open, almost melancholy mood to really dig in and experience this work of performance art. Would love to see you react to his band the Big Push, I think you’d really appreciate them. Their cover of War Pigs is next level awesome to listen to! Second, TBP’s guitarist Romaine Axisa is fantastic and Romaine’s song “Goodbye Good Days” is fantastic and for beautiful guitar 🎸 check out his video in the stairwell called “75 bpm.”

Best reaction to the Ren Shakespearian story telling, and breaking 4th wall (and 5th and beyond, to which I believe his in) because, in my opinion there is no genre this masterful man will fit. Ren a genius that stands out along.

Wonderful point, thank you! I read somewhere that Faulkner would use such broken language and stream of consciousness to force the reader into thinking differently and, just maybe, understanding the character for a moment. I believe Ren is doing the same thing, not merely with the voice but every facet. And yeah, I think he's right: he IS a genius :) Also really appreciate your humility. This is what I like about reactions. Subscribed.

His art ties together if you’ve explored his whole catalog. For example, the pig mask on the nurse in the opening scene, “she sells seashells on the seashore”. It’s a cohesive piece in multiple genres and delivery. Don’t judge at first glance. Do your research and realize this man is brilliant, gifted, and a gift… and it’s not just the message or sound, but also the production of the video… watch the lighting and the camera angle. He’s brilliant!

From someone who lives with a chronic situation... This wasn't about catchy hooks and melodies (even though if you get into Ren, his guitar skills are phenomenal for real and you would dig it wholeheartedly)... But it's about either learning to try your best to sit with always being uncomfortable and trying to understand what it's about or basically screw yourself over and resign yourself to struggle with being uncomfortable... Life can be mad uncomfortable sometimes and life can also have meaning in the uncomfortable moments because their is no true growth without experience... And Ren basically says that when you have to sit in something uncomfortable and have no choice but to live with it, you cannot run away from it or turn off the situation because it feels some type of way... So you either become some sort of friend or at least cordial roommate with the uncomfortableNess or fight against it and resist things... You either choose to be miserable in your miserableness or choose to embrace things that are uncomfortable and not ideal... People who don't have a choice cannot walk out of the room and forget... If people who don't want to face the tough things in life don't want to face it...they don't have to...they have the luxery of choice... Some people don't have the luxery of choice and need to figure it out one way or another... I think to me, that's at least some of Rens message in general.

This performance is about Ren communicating his experience living his “Eternal Dance”. And you are correct that he created this piece for himself first. Then putting himself out there being vulnerable people are able to relate to on some level at the very least dealing with your inner critic who know all you flaws and able to push your buttons. This is basically his calling card, a way to introduce himself and his art to the world. Also people can relate to him and empathize with what is has, is, and continues to go through. Obviously, we are not experiencing his daily struggles in life but those of us dealing with chronic diseases, symptoms, and conditions can certainly appreciate what he has been going through and continues to go through.
