@@SamJohnsonVoice ah man. That's too bad. I hope you'll give it another try. His discography is so vast and scattered across genres. But he has a few "real" live versions of his own songs. Their collaboration "How to Be Me" is great as well. Their chemistry is beautiful and it's another live performance. For a solo song from Chinchilla, "Fingers" is probably the best, but only the Live version. She has a uniqueness in style and vocals that is really showcased in the live performance.

Oh man, Christmas came early!!! I second everything already said about Ren and Chinchilla ( Daisy Bertenshaw ) … How To Be Me and Fingers Live! Ren has referred to Chinchilla as his musical sibling - and it’s evident in their “blood harmonies “ and the trust that they have in each other vocally is evident in their eye contact. Ren is self taught and a multi instrumentalist and all of these live performances are done in one take.

Thanks for a great and detailed reaction! I echo the chorus -- more Ren, please! Here are a few that showcase his vocal skills IMHO: Humble (featuring Eden Nash), Ready for You (he does all of the extra voices and vocal sounds), Freckled Angels (about a close friend who committed suicide, in which he sings while crying, or cries while singing?), Murderer (the genre is rap, but Ren sings rap, and sings it well, though he does swear a bit if that's an issue for you), Uninvited (a simple pop song that he crushes). There are a ton of other Ren songs which include quite a bit of actual (and amazing) singing. I hope you check out more.

Sam I started watching your vocal analyses a while ago, before REN came on the KZbin scene but once I discovered REN I became a diehard fan. When I saw that you analyzed Chalk Outlines it was like different aspects of my world coming together. I really liked the things you pointed out in their performance and, of course, your conclusion that they are both excellent vocalists. REN master of choosing locations that give a lot of reverb to his live performances. Check out his busking videos or him performing with his band The Big Push if you are curious to hear more.

Believe me, he can go powerful on all his notes and he has a wide vocal range. Ren has immaculate control. Anything you hear is very deliberate. It may help to know that his vocal hero is Jeff Buckley and that other commentator have made that comparison, without knowing that. It would be worthwhile watching some of his live busking performances, or some of his live, 1 take videos, like this one, to understand his full range. He's vocally capable of multiple voices, styles and tones. He can go from all out power, to the most delicate of touches, full of subtlety and nuance. A sublime voice. He's actually quite reined in here, providing a platform upon which Chinchilla can shine, which she does, of course! :) He's a very generous collaborator. Another masterpiece composition from Ren, with that emotional rawness, that's pretty much one of his trademarks and probably explains why so many of his songs/videos are recorded live, in a single take. I wish more modern music took this approach, rather than the very generic, controlled and ridiculously over-produced vocals that dominate the industry nowadays. This real and holds your attention because it's real and Ren's lyrics hit home, as always! :)

Although Ren does a lot of rapping and I'm not sure if that's something you really dip into (though, tbh, it could be good for discussions of breath control and why/how his rapping is more melodically dynamic than the typical rapper), Ren also does plenty of singing that I think you would enjoy and would give you good stuff to react to and break down. A few suggestions for more sing-y Ren, should you decide to check out more of his stuff: "Humble" - Ren x Eden Nash (I absolutely LOVE his vocal on this one) "I Shot The Sheriff/Road To Zion/Hip-Hop" - The Big Push (Ren's band, busking on the streets of Brighton) "How To Be Me (live)" - Ren & Chinchilla Btw, Sam, as I commented on one of your videos forever ago, I always love watching your reactions and analyses to songs because your way of describing what's going on internally and how to utilize it properly jibes perfectly with my brain for some reason when I often find myself struggling to interpret what other vocal coaches on YT are saying or how to put what they're saying into practice. In fact, one of your early videos was the one that clicked and springboarded me into my first big breakthrough in my learning-to-sing journey and really made me believe that I didn't have the limitations I thought I had on my voice. You really are a great teacher and I'm stoked that you've put out a book. I can't wait to check it out! I already know I'm gonna level up from what I find inside because your teaching has already enriched my life more than you will ever realize.

Being a speed rapper, he is extremely articulate to pronounce words we can hear so fast. But he is showing he can do it just as slow with a more dynamically acceptable range than rap typically allows. And he dulls his voice with that raspy tone to change his natural accent. Much like he does when replicating his Marley voice.

Accent obviously plays a major role in where they place their vocal expression. Idk I don't get specifics I learned music by ear over 24 years ago and have learned how to proficiency play numerous instruments without the technical knowledge but I promise I can play along with anyone and offer creative highlights just don't ask me what key we are in because I can find it but don't find it particularly relevant and often it's a limiting factor to creativity. Art isn't something easily described with category of rule it's something nuanced and only impactful when it's difficult and creative that's why ren is so mind blowing same with the fuzz monster chinchilla 👾👹😋

Love your analysis! ONE OK ROCK, Japanese band, has a phenomenal vocalist, Taka, he covered *HELLO and Easy On Me - Adelle, he can sing it in original key* check them out!! I guarantee you'll be surprised by his unique voice!! Also check *Take What You Want - LIVE Tokyo Dome 2018!* their LIVE performances are always top tier. I'd really appreciate it! Thank you, and you'll thank me later

Hi Sam 👋 I'd be interested in a reaction to Natalie Jane. She is really good, but wondered what you think on the sustainability of her voice. Thanks 🎉

Well like any You Tuber in the 500k+ range, you probably have to give a pretty big donation to move your artist up in the queue. The bigger the donation, likely the closer to the top they get. Otherwise it will be on a list with hundreds of others in the line. Ren was likely on the waiting list for a bit and his turn came up. He said he did another Ren but the video was ruined with poor sound equipment.

Sometimes the words affect how you sing what you sing its easier to stop focusing on technique if focusing on the words gives emotion and that emotion leads to style. read the lyrics watch it again at your leisure you might see it in a whole new light.
