Today I take apart the 1275cc A-Series engine that is going into Barn Sprite #5. It has been sitting around for years outside the car on the ground. What will I find out about it when I take it apart?

What a great shop.. I noticed all of the equipment you have in this video.... How nice that must be to be able to do most of your projects yourself.......

I love these videos. Please do more! I would especially like to see the installation of the new bearings. I’ve never done this task and was always confused by the Hayne’s manual instructions for using crush tape to set the torque and spacing. Would love to see you demonstrate and explain the process. Thanks!

You sir have the personal shop/garage setup that I dream of. My sand blast cabinet is made out of a clear tote bin and my wife can't be home for me to use the "parts"washer. Man even got the stud removal tool instead of 2 nuts, you're living right lol

On those older engines they had what we called 'scroll' oil seals on the rear journal which worked fine when new and when running but when older and the engine stopped oil just leaked by and into the clutch bell housing. There is a conversion kit available to change to a modern oil seal arrangement. Very common fix on Morris Minors. But you have a bit of a production line going there ..... 👍👍

It's terrifying to see a three-bearing bottom end!! On balance, however, they sure were simple engines back then, easy to work on...

Love to watch those old BL engine teardown and rebuilds. Back in the day I worked for a British Leyland dealership and was a factory trained mechanic, 3 weeks in Abingdon near Oxford in '75. Brings back a lot of memories.

Very interesting to watch a tear down, brings back memories. I have used the larger stud remover but not those smaller ones. They might be useful in tighter spaces and as you say studs that are not too stuck. Looking forward to the next stage Merry Christmas Steve. 👍👍

The big one is very good but not in a small space that doesn't have enough room for it to turn and sometimes the stud (or broken bolt) doesn't stick out far enough for the big one to grab onto it.

I have rebuilt a number of the the 1.8 litre MGB engines, (5 main bearing) but it's cool to see the 1275 little brother torn down. I have two 1275 engines also which may need rebuilding in the future so thank you very much for sharing. Oh if only I had room for wonderful parts washer in my garage. Looking forward to the next installment post machine shop. Any idea how much overbore these little engines can go to?

You can easily go +.060 but I prefer to keep it no more than +.040 because they will start to get hard to keep cool if you go larger.

Hi Steve, why was there an MG sticker on the valve cover. Should it have an austin healey sticker instead? Great videos, always enjoyable. Thanks

Those valve covers could say Austin, MG, or Morris depending on the car the engine was from.
