But the education system isn't monolithic. It's not like when I was studying engineering there was "left" or "right" education, there were neither. He's likely referring to everything related to business and finance, which if you've been paying attention to the world generally has influence on many issues and laws through lobbying, bribery, and back door deals. So....yeah, if you've ever read Naomi Klein you'd learn about Friedman's "Chicago Boys" and their influence throughout history, it's not good stuff in the way of Newton inventing Calculus good stuff, it's good stuff in what 99% of the world would view as diabolic. So sure, humanities studies are likely what you people refer to as left leaning, but Chomsky is correct in that the education system leans in favor of status quo, and again, if you've been paying any sort of attention, that stuff isn't good for almost anyone over the long run, and we're probably all about to witness where this is leading in the next decade considering the events of the past two years. And people who study humanities are likely to do things like employ their writing skills, so it might appear that the world is being veered by their cause, but it's not in any way and you'd be a fool to think it was.
@dribblesg2
@dribblesg2 3 жыл бұрын
Studies five years old have the ratio of Left : Right in the universities as between 10:1 up to 30:1, depending on the department, and the overwhelming disparity grows every year, as the last remaining conservatives get squeezed out. These studies include self-identification data from professors themselves. It's been this way for decades. The problem is Chomsky is an ideologue. In order to maintain his world-view, he uses a ridiculous metric for classifying what is on the 'right', and in his mind it is anyone or anything associated with power, finance and/or hierarchical organization. (As if the Left exists for anything besides seeking power). So for him the Soviets, Harvard, the US media, international finance etc, are all 'far right'.
@yoza3116
@yoza3116 3 жыл бұрын
@@dribblesg2 Chomsky doesn't tend to use the term far-right to describe any of these institutions. The Soviet Union he generally describes as totalitarian state capitalists, Harvard and the US media as establishment propagandists and international finance as a coercive instrument to subordinate foreign state policies to serve the interests of concentrations of private capital. He generally uses the term far-right to describe the Republican party as this is how most of the rest of the world view these people.
@craigdaurizio686
@craigdaurizio686 3 жыл бұрын
@@dribblesg2 Ahhh there ya go, depending on the department. Can you link these studies you're referring to? It's probably not conservatives being squeezed out, it's more likely that people have less unfettered market ideas in light of where we're at. It sounds like you're suggesting that there are a vast amount of people with conservative leanings, but for the majority of the 99%, they obviously don't and it's not cause they're lazy, it's because they work 40+ hours a week and if they come up short they're advised: Just get a higher paying job. Obviously their response is: wow why didn't I think of that. I get it, I used to do shit work and moved into engineering, but I know plenty of very hard-working, intelligent people who simply haven't landed solid paying work. I would think your comment on grabbing power is somewhat ironic no? Political leaning has nothing to do with how much you want to grab power, everyone does, including everyone you believe who doesn't. If you argue that the "left" (lol you must be American or one of the newly whiny Canadians) is trying to grab power through government, then you must also concede that when the "right" grabs power, it's effectively the same as mafia - unelected, opaque transparency, violent and ruthless at times, and involved in who knows what to keep their racket running, sure as shit they aren't aiming for an open market.

The most important and indubitably true statement in this video is Thomas Sowell's statement that intellectuals never do anything but write books and therefore are never responsible for anything. This is undeniably true no matter what your politics. I should know. I'm a retired humanities professor. I was a member of a small circle of academics in the same field, and for fifty years I had been the only one who had done something or even proposed doing something related to our field. They all criticized everything American, including its foreign policy. For what I had done I received only scorn. For what I proposed doing they said I had psychological problems. Now the oldest of our circle has died and the rest of us will follow him in the not too distant future. And nothing has changed.

US foreign policy is imperialistic, there is no arguing that.Arguing against imperialism is not only moral, but ethically necessary. The US had NO reason to be in Vietnam or any other country where they have had interests. Not only has it been bad for those countries, but bad for america, whose population has essentially always been pretty isolationist to the point of not even knowing where most countries are on a map.

Whether he's Right-Wing or Far-Right is up for debate, but it's clear that Peterson considers anyone to the left of the Nazis to be excluded from the Far Right, so we can't take his word for granted when he excludes himself from the Far-Right. Peterson obscures reality of most things. He is a paid propagandist on most topics. Take for example basic classical liberalism. At its core classical liberalism and its primary proponents were against concentrated corporate power. Adam Smith, Jefferson, Paine, Franklin and many others actively fought against this. The fact that Peterson perverts the classical liberal ideals. But of course classical liberalism was in reality the left wing of early liberal democracy. Would Peterson fit into the federalist frame. The answer is no for multiple reasons but primarily is he is in support of international corporate power and not protectionism. So he doesn’t even make it into the federalist frame. He is for far right international corporate power. And both federalists and classical liberals despite their differences both supported enlightenmentism. The fact that Peterson is willing to lie about philosophical ideas is evidence that he cares nothing for the enlightenment. His positions on social issues is really just a thin veneer of bullshit.

@LovingLiberty76
@LovingLiberty76 Жыл бұрын
@@alexb9969 You are aware that Sowell was not always conservative, aren't you? He changed his views as he studied history. He doesn't dismiss slave revolts, but he also doesn't overstate them--slaves simply did not have the ability to end slavery, and in fact, the effort to end it came predominately from people in the West (e.g., Britain's West Africa Squadron trying to stop the Atlantic slave trade). Chomsky, on the other hand, is rarely right because he ignores facts that contradict his preferred view. For example, his thesis that the U.S. (and the West in general) "colonized" other countries to take their resources ignores the fact that "colonizers" always poured in more money (infrastructure, etc.) than they extracted (see: Barrington Moore, Jr.--and he wasn't exactly a foaming-at-the-mouth capitalist). (The exception to this may have been Belgium and Congo, an appalling history). Yes, it is likely that most in the West felt superior to the people they were dealing with, but those feelings were the basis of believing in the importance of imposing such principles as the rule of law, ending such barbaric practices as suttee (sati), etc. Chomsky, on the other hand, ignores Castro's brutality (political imprisonment, show trials, etc.) because Castro gave lip service to lifting up the peasants (who continue to live in desperate poverty--ain't communism grand?). And his stoking of class resentments by pretending that prosperity is a zero sum game in which if someone makes a bunch of money, they are stealing it from those who make less, is incorrect and immoral. Of course, we all view history through a lens of how we think things should be, but we do not have the ability to know how they would otherwise have been had people done things differently. The best we can do is try to understand human nature and do our best to predict based upon what has been done in the past--and that requires looking at the results as objectively as possible.

Sowell is a scholar ie above and beyond academic and is an excellent example, and exemplar, of an intellectual. 2. @@njm2699 did u even pay attention to what Sowell said. He starts (in the previous video, giving a few examples of how and why soft (b.a. versus b.s.) intellectuals always get it wrong on foreign policy. The product they produce is ideas, which rarely get field tested, therefore cant be proven wrong. Your take on this, shows a rather limited understanding of history , foreign policy and Sowells views. The vietnam war and the Tet offensive is the perfect example of how soft intellectuals on college campuses and soft professionals (again, b a.'s vs. B.s.'s like chomsky) in the media got it all wrong regarding the tet offensive which was a huge military defeat for the vietcong, but a huge Public relations victory (cuz they wrongly said we lost) thanks to the agenda driven liberal media, which is a guarantee of defeat in any democracy. BTW, the war in vietnam was very much justified and served its purpose. We could've and should've fought to win, but the 12 year war stopped the communist chinese expansion it its tracks. Were it not for the sacrifices of our 50,000 soldiers. China would have gobbled up All those tiny asian counties and beyond with no resistance. We would be living in a very different world had that happened. Our surrender in 75 brought a horrible genocide in s.vietnam, as well as Cambodia etc. 3 Million Cambodian lives and millions more in S. Vietnam and surrounding countries. I think protecting those lives (for 12 years at least) MORE than justifies our efforts. The only shame is the same shame Biden has now reenacted in Afghanistan. Pulling out after twenty years of peacekeeping with virtually no loss of life. Yet we bail like scared rabbits leaving behind 85 billion in state of the art military equipment, (which the Taliban is selling to IRA bv to use against our allies). Peterson declares a big chunk of his lectures on shi*ting on communism, although the only left-wing book that he read was "The Communist Manifesto" (as he admitted), a 40 page pamphlet made for people who don't read often, I dunno why he didn't read Das Kapital at least. And he read it while he was preparing for debate, so I don't know what tf he knows about politics or economics, but he sure as hell makes 200 lectures on Gulags and how bad it was because of communism and communism never worked, and I don't see him either understanding politics to know that the USSR was not a communist country, or blaming Afghanistan, Indonesia, Syria, Latin America, and pretty much the millions of killings by capitalistic countries like the US, on capitalism. Chompsky based the topic of his anti-American speech that evening, on articles which he quoted, all from Spanish American news sources. I sat there, probably the only person in that audience, wondering how naive such an intelligent man could be, to accept news from Spanish American newspapers. The answer is that Chompsky is a believer in his anti-American stance, and so he takes for truth the news articles that support his belief.

He speaks the truth... The same can be said of him. As an intellectual, he has produced nothing but books. No matter what the books produce as a result of reading, he will bear no responsibility or consequences.

Sowell's brightest idea was to leave the Academy, which has become depleted of perspective, sense of proportion and filled, instead, with sheltered, opportunist profs like Chomsky and Said.

Chomsky comparing JBP to Attila reminds me of an anecdote: the founder / chief editor of the most (in)famous leftist magazine in my country called Stalin a RIGHT-WINGER because he was authoritarian. That’s how far they are willing to lie to others and themselves to twist the reality to fit their ideology.
