Downtown Oakland BART 20-25 years ago, in and out during my commute. Every workday I encountered scores of lethargic, blank and dull babies; agitated and bawling toddlers lolling and squirming in strollers with their unschooled teen mothers, themselves neglected, angry and alone, feeding their tots soda, juice, chips and candy, while they idled, preened and gossiped, ignoring snotty noses, gummy eyes and tiny hands reaching upward. Worn out from noise, no naps, no teddy bears, no quiet place, no shady patch of grass on which to discover your first dandy lion or ant; no structure or solace; no Beatrix Potter. It troubled me then. But even more so now: where are those babies today? How many of them have survived this long? Those little people packed with potential, optimism and brains whose destinies should have been: historians, clergy, lawyers, dentists, economists, actors, contractors and business owners with all the perks and self-satisfaction that goes along with. To witness that tragedy was a pre-occupation, especially since I could not have a kid of my own. To mention my concern then, I'd have been labeled a racist. But it was the opposite of racism. It was heartbreak. It was dread and worry and grief for those little kids, already consigned to a universe of personal misery and urban tragedy.

I raised my children as a single parent and as long as the marriage is not a toxic or dysfunctional structure, two parents are always better than one. On so many levels. It also gives kids a healthy model on how adults ahould communicate and resolve problems without resorting to violence.

But I have unbelievable respect and admiration for guys like Loury, Sowell, McWhorter, Coleman, and many others. They're 100x the intellect I could ever hope to be. They could save their people? You speak as though the individuals you’ve mentioned are the only ones within "their" community thriving, while implying that the remaining 99.99999% are consumed by belligerent arrogance and madness. Your words come across like those of someone who judges Black people first and later adds, “Oh, but you’re one of the good ones.” While it’s true that there’s a noticeable portion of the Black community that struggles with a moral compass, the issue is nowhere near as widespread as you might believe. My circle of friends and family consists primarily of Black professionals, most of whom are upper-middle class. I live in a predominantly Black community in Buckhead, Atlanta, surrounded by countless Black professionals. Let’s not get it twisted.

This is true but the victims go along with it so it is 2 sided. Internal.and external. Black America has never rejected the social engineering they have been under since the end of slavery. Even if the system stopped its' machinations, that is no guarantee that the internal problems will cease especially since many are considered as part of the identity/culture of the community itself.

Awesome interview I have said it many times; the over all failure in many communities, no matter the race, usually comes down to the people of the community. The people of the communities have stopped holding people ACCOUNTABLE; people started relying on law enforcement and let the flow of violence start, now it is going to be hard to stop the flow without the people of the COMMUNITY taking a stand. I don't see that happening in todays time; back in the 1980's or 90's, yeah the people of the community take a stand when the bullshit would begin and law enforcement was a savior for anyone that pissed off my community. My community included White, Black, Spanish, Asian and Native American men and women; we had a diverse all star team of Florida cowboys that could get very creative when pissed off. That is what is needed now; the people of the communities need to take a stand, easier said than done, yet still very true.

Majority of teachers are NOT "ideologically driven." is it "ideological" to want their students to NOT BE HUNGRY ---so, they can focus on learning? Is it "political motive" to want inner city students to have access to school libraries, smaller class sizes, the arts and other "amenities" that SUBURBAN middle-class & wealthy students can take for granted? All those who bash our public school teachers should SPEND TIME IN CLASSROOMS and try to do the job of teaching.

A fine interview. I've always felt that this interviewer is the Johnny Carson of serious topics: his interviewees seem to feel at ease and are able to clearly express their opinions in a supportive and attentive environment. While I agree with Murray's theory that welfare is ruining the West (and not just black America, white America, particularly rural white America, has fallen apart in ways quite similar to urban black America), an intriguing addendum to the theory is to point out (as many have) that the way welfare is doled out, giving less to two parents living in one household than to the same two parents living in two households, is an important factor in the decline of the American poor. Children benefit enormously from having a father and mother living together raise them; and it seems obvious that the welfare system--by giving less to two-parent households--has strongly incentivized children having only one parent present. And, yes, as you say, there is room for doing a (way) better job of teaching children morality. But, of course, in addition to an important role to be played by the church and similar institutions, a present father can help enormously with this. Also, imo, the government should do nothing to "help" the black church or the black man, for that matter (shout out to the late great Frederick Douglass).

If young women would simply USES CONTRACEPTIVES and focus on finishing high school and education/trade school beyond, focus on SELF-DEVELOPMENT, mauturing emotionally, intellectually and establishing stability. We are Americans point blank period
@alexbaum2204
@alexbaum2204 20 күн бұрын
I can’t speak as a public intellectual or as a black man. I’m a white man. I’m a merchant marine. I happen to live and work with black Americans for months at a time. I depend on them just as they depend on me. I socialize with them and break bread with them daily. My own experiences with life in America and especially my daily interactions with black Americans is pretty much all I have to go on when it comes to this topic. This is a highly nuanced issue. There are historical and economic factors that go into this. But I believe this is far more closely related to an issue of culture. And I do not simply mean an issue of black culture. That is painting with too broad of a brush. I believe that this is a generational issue within black culture. Generations can blend into each other and there can be many interpretations of what one is from another, so it’s a bit of a vague concept. But I basically mean that there seems to be a very clear connection to the violence plaguing a city like Chicago and the culture of black Americans born from the mid-90’s and onward. To avoid going on too much longer, I’ll just say that my experience dictates that this culture seems to celebrate some of these figures. You can ask a point blank question like “what do you think of the situation in Chicago or Jacksonville these days?” They’ll quickly tell you that it’s bad and sad and messed up. But it’s not uncommon for it to be a mess hall discussion of who’s going to jail for what and who killed who or who insulted whose woman or mother. It’s to the point where there’s almost an obsession about this type of celebrity gossip. There seems to be some kind of pride in it if a neighborhood they were raised in comes into the story - as if they are somehow validated the more dangerous their hometown is. And this simply is just not the case with the black men and women I live and work with who are in my age group and above - 35+. Family is a huge topic of conversation that we can all laugh about and commiserate over. Our vacation plans. Pay scales and unions. Music, sports, movies, some current events. They’ll also heave a sigh over places like south Chicago and exclaim how horrible they think it is. But it stops there. It doesn’t continue with mythical tales of how these thugs are essentially ruining their communities. I don’t think it’s simply a job for the police commissioner and the mayor to vehemently call out these crime waves as deplorable human behavior. I think it’s time for those types and elder black Americans to begin vehemently calling out a culture that has become trash. Time to start calling hero worship of these gangs as despicable. Time to start calling out the culture around it - from rappers to ball players to the street soldiers right on the ground - and anyone who glorifies it as part of the problem. I think that’s the way to solve a lot of this. The goal is really to see black children grow up in a safe and productive community where they can have options, opportunity, access to success, and a full understanding/experience of genuine love and care. It’s to see them grow up to reach their potential instead of being gunned down before they even finish junior high school. So no time to waste and zero reason to sugar coat things. Their lives hang in the balance, so we ought to get this right. Sorry for the rant.

All of this sounds great and speaks to a lot of what we all know is the problem - but it still will boil down to people getting into these communities and doing the work that is necessary to lift these people up. It's great to point out the problem, but if all is being done is pointing out the issues and not addressing them - then it's a waste of time and could be better used in other areas. Plato said this, "Any city, however small, is in fact divided into two, one the city of the poor, the other of the rich; these are at war with one another". Let's fix the problem and not the blame.

Spirit-filled life, (ESV) Galarians5: 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

Church and Family are not the only options. Glenn seems to have arrived at that fact some time back. Both can be good or bad. It depends on the goal of the individual. If they begin with a focus on Truth and Love, they'll be fine. Yes, God and Family seem to be a very simple and direct path. That said, everyone is not born into a strong loving family, and religion can be confusing once you go beyond "love God and love your neighbor". Truth must be the foundation that everything is built upon. As for the State, it has been an abject failure with regard to supplanting these Truths.

The state has been a great success. It set out to destroy the family and did so in many areas of society. The myth of progressivism, that society is always moving in a positive direction, closes off the liberal elites ability to stop and reverse the direction of travel even when everyone can see we are going the wrong way.

In the late fifties and into the sixties they built the Cabrini-Green and Robert Taylor Homes. This took the least productive citizens out of communities where they could learn decent behavior and values and concentrated them with each other. Those projects may have begun as better physical conditions, but the incapacities of the inhabitants and their mutual interaction destroyed the morals of the inhabitants (if they had any). That and the civil rights movement generally made improvement impossible. Conclusion: there will always be some worthless people and despite our good intentions, we can't fix that.

If there is an economic collapse in America like or worse than the great depression and the government had to cut off all welfare and public spending because of insolvency....80% or more black Americans would starve to death or end up killed in desperation driven violence. There's no such thing as a healthy community that depends this much on government handouts. Of course other communities would suffer as well but none will suffer more than black Americans. Its sad but since they have allowed themselves to be so tied to the government their fate and the government's fate is inextricably intertwined.

Where do all the postmodern ideas lead? That’s always what frustrates me. It’s such a dark path; we actually have no idea how dark, but we know it’s not good for anyone. There’s little to no concession about this from proponents of these ideas, when these Marxist ideas have continually led to utter misery.

There's an enormous logical gap that postmodernists leap over. They claim, essentially, that there is no truth. Then comes the leap: therefore we must pursue our natural instincts, which all lead to communism.

The lack of faith in religion and american institutions is an American problem not just a African-American problem. Money & Power are America's God. When you lack those things you'll do anything to attain it. Don't blame those who lost faith in the System without looking at the System itself.

It must be a bewildering thing for poor single parents trying to raise children, to witness that more well-to-do young adults are declining to have children "because we can't afford them." I'm not saying I'm an expert, but I'm also not wealthy, and I believe "no income tax on families under X amount of dollars with X number of children" might be appropriate..

Going to have to disagree doctor Lowry on his initial presupposition. As a theologian and Bible scholar it is clear all human beings have a sinful nature. And at base of a sinful nature is greed and selfishness. This was clear in the murder of Abel by Cain, and it's clear as Jesus underwrites the foundation of the royal law of Christ as loving God and loving your neighbor as You Love yourself. The ability to be able to act in a selfless nature as opposed to a selfish nature. Now of course this does tie to right living but there is also a serious economic portion of this. Black people in Chicago and other areas aren't having more murders because they are inherently more sinful than anyone else or genetically inferior to anyone else, there is a significant disproportion of poverty that exist in high concentrations in these areas. To ignore those primary agitating factors is to potentially ignore the whole problem.

Your premis that poverty = violence is frequently disproved in communities around the world where poor people are not murderous, murderousness is a cultural thing & not economically driven. Read Thomas Sowell, his work is great at disambiguation of data that, viewed in isolation, gives the appearance of correlation. E.g., 6 of the 10 poorest counties in America are almost 100% white but not nearly as murderous as Detroit, New Orleans, etc. It's not skin color nor economics, it's black gangster culture born of the results of enticing Black women into fatherless welfare dependence.
