I like him, but he's connecting dots with a very broad brush. There's a strength in that but he's limited by his perspective and seems not to notice he lacks specific knowledge because of this style. He puts American history and American perception of history into perspective by looking at Britain, through an English lens, and for example ignores the fact that Scots often consider themselves to have been ahead of England for a large part of the Middle Ages, before the English started to dominate them. And Britain is only Britain, there was a lot more going on in the world.
@Kipperbob
@Kipperbob 2 жыл бұрын
@@DenUitvreter when you dig deeper into Sowells writing he does back up his claims fairly well, and it's hard to argue with the fact that the cultures with the greater technological advancement have always brought greater and greater prosperity into the world as they spread their influence, being Irish it's not a nice thing to have to admit after all the centuries of cultural oppression my own ancestors went through, but the British influence in Ireland including the English language has enabled Irish people to conduct business all over the globe, I wouldn't wish to see what Ireland would be like now if we had never had the evils of the British empire, because we also inherited a lot of valuable assets in the process. It's just a shame that our ancestors had to be enslaved for centuries and suffer so much in order for us to get to here and now. But in the end, the here and now is a pretty sweet time and place to be. Better than 800 plus years ago before we knew about England or Europe living in small tribal groups constantly at war with each other over stolen cows sheep or women.

Sowell has read Karl Marx's Das Kapital on his own and decided that the capitalist do not exploit the working class among other things. Petersen was a Social Democrat as a young person. Like Sowell he travels in the world of Western Intellectuals he must of liked Gorbachev since he named on of his daughter after him. Gorbachev though rose in the party because as a child he wrote the most slavish praise of Stalin. Sowell is quite boring and predictable as a neoliberal. Petersen seems to be someone more like Trump who has struck on some nerves, bashed some ruling class figures, institutions and been under attack for it.

Becoming an amateur historian and collector of Greek and Roman antiquities led me to the path of critical thinking and historically informed views. So you don't realize it is repeating.

I would disagree, and point out how far Critical theory itself has caused academics to try to build civilization from the ground up. I've always respected Thomas Sowell for his intellectual integrity. He began as a communist, but then changed his views. One of the most influential (to me) things he said was that when he he was in government. His bosses would make certain decisions designed to help the poor, raise academic standards, etc, mainly based on their ideology. As an analyst, he assumed that they would want to find out if those changes had the expected results, so he created studies to prove or disprove their methods. To his surprise, he discovered that they didn't care to know if their methods worked or not. Sowell's thoughts are based on empirical evidence and the historical record: what happened, what worked, and what did not. The left is firmly stuck in ideology and feelings, and facts be damned.

Capitalism and the system of private profits can not stay out of wars and economic crisis. The logic of profit spells the end of the system of profits since the increase of capital in production lead to an inevitable decline in the rate of profit by which capital judges success. Greed drives investment and only investments that expand production produce real profits investments in fictitious capital inevitably lead to crisis when the price collapses. The success of the bosses produces the inevitable downturn. To exit the down turn the debts must be increased or capital destroyed. Yours is a system that can only march towards war and fascism.

Yes, and social justice leaders profit from the continued ignorance - never heard Sharpton or Jackson share a biblical gospel or truth as deep as Sowell. BLM, a communist organization wore a great label and made their money - no agenda to help blacks other than themselves; agenda is to tear America and capitalism down, but loved buying themselves those million dollar homes. Democrats are the real pros - just like Ronald Reagen warned, "We're from the government and hear to help". Democrats have been helping themselves on the black people's dimes. Hillary Clinton's hero in 2016 campaign should tell you something - Daughter of the Confederacy, white supremacist, Margaret Sanger, mother of Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood's intended purpose? Women's rights? Not even close! Extermination of black babies in the inner city. What percentage of country is black? What percentage of aborted babies are black? Gocernment-sanctioned, Democrat-supported, tax-payer-funded annihilation of black babies. No more black babies = no more black adults in the future. Vote Obama, vote Clinton, vote Biden. Trump was the racist? Orange man bad - and you just kept believing them. If you're looking at someone else they demonize, then you're not looking closer at them - the way they like it!

Thomas Sowell is a genius! Its always interesting to hear him talk, about everything- from his past as a Marxist when he was very young to his transformation as he was exposed to.. in his words: “FACTS!”

I am grinning from ear to ear, because I heard the emphasis you used on the words "hard copy". You are a closet book lover like myself, Van!! I am enamored of the beautiful bindings of old books, I'm thrilled to own the hard copy of any book as opposed to the cheaper paperbacks that is mostly what I could afford until I discovered used book sales at public libraries! Most of them have them every month or so to make room for new arrivals! I now have a nice collection of books, mostly hard cover that I bought for between 10 - 50 cents! I discovered before I even started school that those pages could take me far, far away from the poverty and abuse that I grew up in. So I read every single book I could get my hands on. I was probably the only kid at my high school that was skipping school every day (the boring classes) to go sit in the treasure chest of the library and explore and read. And they never did find me, by the way! And I do love Thomas Sowell, but I want you to draw your own conclusions about the man. 🤗

First and foremost, Thomas Sowell is an extremely logical thinker which is rare in our society (world wide). He not only stops at the "easiest answer"; he looks beyond the face of issues to find the true sub-issues which in turn directs him towards a logical understanding. Beware the person who panders in panic, while also selling a cure.

We're never too old to learn things and I only discovered Thomas Sowel and Jordan Peterson a couple years ago. If only the schools and universities had more teachers like these two men we'd all be so much better off.

In a more perfect world, Economics would be taught in High School ....rather then to a tiny sliver of college students. Example: Zero sub-Saharan countries never colonized are better off economically, and structurally, than those colonized. Obviously, Liberty matters......so it's just that colonization ended. Disastrous self-rule is always superior, in terms of Liberty and sovereignty. Although, as a Puerto Rican ....I'm sure glad the U.S. beat Spain, then controlled PR, and ultimately made residents U.S. citizens in 1917. No disrespect, without the USA, PR would be at best the Dominican Republic.

7:37 Slavery is extremely old. Our modern word for it "slavery" does come from the Slavs who were forced into slavery in the Middle Ages, but slavery as an institution is at least thousands of years old, likely older. In fact, some interesting words you use refer to slavery in some way, without you ever knowing. For instance the word "family" ultimately derives from "Famulus" meaning servant or slave in Latin, to which later in Rome the word "familia" would refer not to just your blood kin, but _also_ the slaves that lived with you. This term was not what it is today, necessarily. Unfortunately subjugating our brothers and sisters has been a hallmark of humanity for a long time.

Sowell, he brings up stuff that I certainly never realized. He has done extensive research on not just our western colonization but also referenced ancient Rome and its conquest, which makes sense , it just repeats itself . Mankind is mankind, one race. Those who prosper and those who do not.

The main thing about this man other than his intellect and his knowledge, is the very fact that he speaks to you in a reasonable manner. He’s not trying to browbeat you into thinking a certain way, he’s not demanding that you think exactly like he thinks or else he ostracizes you, he gives you information explains it and then allows you to make your own decisions. That is a true teacher.

Thomas Sowell is one of the most knowledgeable people on this planet. I believe his knowledge forms his position on issues rather than politics or feelings. I believe Thomas Sowell to be an honest man and like you Van, i would have loved to have sat in his classrooms. I think that would have been a privilege. When I was of college age and he was teaching, my school records would not have allowed me to study at Cornell. I learned in the Navy in 1967, instead.
