I'm 54. I live in Atlanta. I was in grade school when black history month was first started. I think it was 3rd or 4th grade and then every year after that. Why was Thomas Sowell not included? Oh that's right. He's a critical thinker who is not a leftist shill. It's a shame I didn't learn about him until 5 years ago. He's a national treasure.
@fuzzywzhe10 ай бұрын
I don't think Thomas Sowell had made a name for himself back then. When you were in 4th grade, that would make you about 9, and being 54, that means you were born in around 1967, so I don't think Sowell was around in the late 1970s, I mean he was around, but he wasn't incredibly famous. Sowell was in the Democratic party until 1972. Sowell I think began to rise to prominence in the early 1980s.

He then went to the libertarian party and again he was rejected. Of course, the liberals rejected him, so he was left high and dry to only write books and become more educated. He would have been a good governor, senator or even president but the parties bases are not ready for a black man. My God, the stupidity. I'm a retired doctor, with 45 years experience on the front lines, and 2 years as President of the board of the most successful IPA in California. Our insurance corporation-centric system is the worst conceivable option. We currently spend TWICE what the other 17 Information Age democracies spend, roughly $12,000/year per capita, vs $6000 for Norway, New Zealand et al. For that, we get the insurance industry duplicating services that We, the People already provide, for which they skim off hundreds of billions of dollars. I worked through the mire for decades, and it's a MESS. Single payer systems are more efficient, cover everyone rather than just the affluent, have better outcome measures (we're dead last of 17 countries), and 70% of their citizens are happy with their systems, compared to 28% of us. Obama had visions of moving us to a European style single payer system, but the Republicans blocked him. They're owned by the insurance industry. The ACA (ObamaCare) was the best he could do. Yet it has been revolutionary. About 5 years ago I had a family in my practice, 32 year old parents of 8 and 12 year old kids. He drove a truck for a gravel quarry, made about $4500/month, and had excellent benefits. They were happy. And Republican, supporters of Rump. Then the Republican owner of the company eliminated the retirement and health benefits. They priced private policies, and the best bid cost $2400/month, with a $40 copay for doctor visits,, $30 copay for each prescription, and a $5000 yearly deductible -- for EACH family member. They were frantic. They came to me and asked what options they had. I suggested the ACA, but they were horrified. "OBAMACARE?" They had issues with his being half and half. They left, sad. 3 weeks later the husband came in for something minor, and mentioned they had enrolled with the ACA, and their cost was $800/month, with FAR lower copays and deductibles. That's still too high, but a vast improvement. Currently the ACA is the largest payer, I believe, after Medicare. THIS is what Rump worked so hard to repeal, all because Obama had humiliated him at the 2012 White House Correspondents dinner.

@@jimweir6500 Nope, you wouldn't think that 15 years ago. Although, culturally, I take your point that a US citizen, regardless of whether a system is far superior to another, he simply wants the choice of whether to pay in to the system in the first place. But an example, The UK health service before 2010 cost a negligible amount compared to the US system, waiting lists were similar and outcomes were also similar, you could also get cutting-edge treatments in both.Unfortunately, the stupid British people have elected a right-wing government four times in a row, so that the current party is extreme right wing and each party in turn, has been under paying year upon year, for 15 years, to put the system on its last legs, now now. The extreme right wing party, the Conservatives have been in power, which has increased waiting lists exponentially, but for the 40 years before that it was recognised by several independent studies is the most cost-effective and high value health service internationally EVERY YEAR. Bulk purchasing definitely kept the price down and there was no incentive for pharmacies TO TRY TO MAKE YOU SICK, in order to provide other medication to heal you again, in a vicious circle and there was also no incentive to only do research on medications which make a profit.

In Australia many young people leave school at around 17 and I think in America you get the label of a drop out. These people usually do an apprenticeship. So one day a week is at something like a trade school. The rest of the week they are at work in that trade. They get really low pay doing this for 4 years, so businesses like having an apprentice working for them. By 21 they are fully qualified. In the past when house prices weren't so high they would own a house while university students were still paying off their loan for a certificate that they may never use. I think in the world of A I a trade is a more stable way to keep a job before being replaced by a machine.

It's less amazing when you consider the "education" that everyone is receiving by force. The public education system was originally designed to breed conformity and pliability in the unwashed masses. At the time, that wasn't considered anything to apologize for so (lucky for us) everyone was quite explicit about their intentions. Nowadays, the self-anointed philosopher-kings who run the show know better than to say the quiet part aloud. Those people speak very (VERY) loudly about the social importance of what they do, since that's the best disguise for tyranny. Also notice how our graduates are innumerate, practically illiterate, ignorant about culture and history (especially if they've majored in those topics), and mainly want to pursue a career instead of starting and running a business? It's no accident. When I was young, I thought absolute political freedom was the ideal. Boy, was I wrong! Political rights are what people pursue after they've lost all their economic rights, and that's where we're at in the West. It was fun while it lasted, back in the 18th century.

In my childhood family there were only two out of four children that had any interest in or academic ability to get a college degree. Two were very socially adept and had ppl skills among other talents and abilities but absolutely no mental prowess when it came to booksmarts. ... therefore it is ridiculous to say that every family should be able to put all their children thru college & higher education.

@Rowlph888810 ай бұрын
Nope, much of what he says is bollocks on the economy.. Enforced taxation in some industries is clearly more effective - competition does not ALWAYS bring the price down. That's been proven in the last 5 years. In many industries companys simply communicate and partition the market into separate market shares for each, but virtually the same price for the lower quantity that only one company was providing the entire market share for previously, leading to much higher charges for the consumer Thomas has some interesting stuff to say, but ultimately his entire narrative on all topics, is just a race to the top, with everyone except the most hard-working and Skilful group, getting very little, but still giving everything - What kind of quality-of-life is that!

He supports trickle down, the reason wages are stagnant and inflation is through the roof. The rich don't need to be taxed because all their money is tied up in their corporations whose taxes have been slashed to almost nothing and now we can't even afford to balance a federal budget and there's no longer even a middle class anymore. Sowell is correct.... Not everyone will prosper from a college education. We told our kids there are two kinds of people in this world, you are either "Book Smart or Back Smart", and either one is perfectly fine. In California the average plumer and electrician make over approx $115,000.00 which is more than many people that have a college education, and who will spend 20 years to pay off student loans. The same can be said for many construction jobs (General Contractors) and state and government jobs. So once again Sowell is right on point! There are so many good paying employment opportunities that pay more than people with a college degree. I hate that school officals only present and push college to high school kids and not trade schools as other options.
