March 1983, Atlantic City, NJ. Current WBC Super Welterweight champion Thomas 'The Hitman' Hearns and top ranked ranked contender Mike "The Body Snatcher" McCallum take part in one of the most heated GYM WARS in KRONK history! This masterclass of boxing action took place in Atlantic City leading up to McCallum's bout versus Tony Suero. 🔥 McCallum would leave KRONK to join the Duva stable a year later as he felt he was passed over when Hearns was awarded an upcoming fight with Roberto Duran, after Duran vacated his WBA Junior Middleweight title rather than face McCallum. McCallum's rivalry with KRONK continued to burn hot as he went on to a record of 2-0 versus KRONK boxers, David Braxton and Milton McCrory. 🥊

It’s crazy that Haggler had to legally change his name to Marvellous Marvin Haggler to get people at the time to genuinely call him that. No one acknowledged his greatness back then for whatever reason. Homie is lowk imo one of the most techincally proficient boxers OAT. He understood boxing, nun of this “technical” fighter bullshit that’s all running. Nah he was a real technical boxer and threw some genuine hands. I study him hella often esp him in southpaw since I’m left handed. Funnily enough I’m built more like Hearns tho so my style kinda a mix of them 2 but I’ll admit shit leans to hearns style more often 😂

This was awesome to watch and yes, they were giving each other some light work, but Kronk gym was known for absolute it's brutal sparring wars like nowhere else. It's boxing folklore and no gyms today train like this today. Emanuel Steward was a believer in fire forges steel, and this is how you had to train at Kronk.

I remember Emanuel talking about how Tommy struggled with tough sluggers, but he generally handled expert boxers quite well (beating Leonard until he was stopped, beat Benitez, Virgil Hill when he was much older). A lot of it is his size with an amazingly educated jab. Tommy's jab was really a thing to look at... but it was so fast you couldn't see it haha.

Which makes me further believe that he wouldn't have had much if any problem with Floyd Maweather if they had ever fought in there primes. Floyd was a classic BOXER, and Tommy had the easiest time with those style fighters, mainly because of how greatly trained a BOXER he was by the late great Steward.

McCallum was every bit as skilled as those guys. The only thing he lacked was the explosiveness & athleticism of the aforementioned boxers (except Duran) He was more skilled than Tommy Hearns: Better footwork, better defense, more versatile in range, better stamina, and slightly higher IQ. Tommy was prone to get in unnecessary trade offs and completely abandon technique & get sloppy. As in the case during the Hagler fight. Watching these two legends duke it up really makes you lament over the current state of boxing: all the class, honor, and technique of the yesteryears seem to be gone in the sport. Salute to these legends. Peace on the souls of Marvin Hagler.
