I use the SMSL SA300 for over a year now for my desktop setup and really like it. Do you plan making a separate review on that comparing to budget full size amps and recomanding suitable speakers? You mentioned the internal DAC to be the weak point. Would something cheap like the Topping E30 make a noticeable difference?
@ThomasAndStereo4 жыл бұрын
I don't think I will make a review on it since there are already a few good one. Already with the AUNE X8, I hear an improvement and Mr. Vintage loves it with the SMSL M400. Of course, it is ridiculous to add a DAC like that to his SA300. I would say, don't spend money on upgrading the SA300, if you you want to move up, just get something else completely instead for a true upgrade.

Really a bargain at $140. How does it compare to Sprout100, a $700 class D with roughly the same output of 50W into 8Ω? I knew you reviewed Sprout100 some time ago.

Nice comparison!I have a pair of The Fives and am quite happy with them. Like you, I am less worried about accuracy than I am engagement. I am using them about 50/50 music and TV audio. I am using them with a subwoofer and I think that made a significant difference for me. I really feel like this made it more tune-able. I also think it improved the midrange noticeably. . I already owned the sub so it did not increase the cost. I was primarily looking to simplify my life by having a system that my wife could operate. Now I have that plus I like the way it sounds.
@ThomasAndStereo4 жыл бұрын
Yes, from my understanding, once you plug in a sub, it will send less low frequency to the woofers in the speaker so it allows the midrange to improve.

Great review Thomas as usual! The Fives are so much fun. I'm not a true audiophile, (but I am a musician) and I absolutely LOVE them. Best money I ever spent. I connect a subwoofer when listening to music but keep it off on TV. I think they are an outstanding value for money and the sound quality and they really save space, since not only are they small - you don't need a receiver. PS - I also can't thank you enough for recommending (in another review) the Uberlight 4200 TL LED lamp! I recently lived several days with these Fives vs the Kanto Tuks. Important point: I like my speakers bright. For example, my Sony headphones are set to "bright." I liked everything about the Fives (including their $200 discount) EXCEPT the highs on the Tuks just blew them away. So I returned the Fives. They sure were beautiful, though. If treble isn't what floats your boat, these are very desirable active speakers.

One thing to keep in mind is that the Klipsch Fives have something called "Dynamic Bass" enabled by default (bass boost). This can be disabled by holding the sub-woofer button on the remote for 3 seconds. So if you are complaining about "too much bass" you should give this a try. Personally, I like it with it on, but I typically listen at a low to medium volume.

I own these and have tested the bass boost several times and can hear NO difference. And, on either setting, the bass seems “normal,” to me. Yet the 5s are universally reported to be very bass heavy. I wonder if I’m missing something.

@johnbishop68904 жыл бұрын
So nice to hear a reviewer who doesn’t adhere to the neutral is God in music. Every speaker has a flavor of it’s own, and for many, neutral is B-O-R-I-N-G. Listening to live music rarely sounds neutral, yet so many are ecstatic with hearing it in its fullness in a live setting including me. Regarding the review itself, the Fives might provide “fun” bass in a small room, but the pair I had were woefully inadequate in a medium sized room. The solution though is sooo freeking simple. Get an 8-10” subwoofer and these speakers really come alive! The midrange/woofer can concentrate on the mids without having to pull from the mids to try to get to 50hz or so. So u get great lows, nice mids, and highs without asking a 5+” speaker to do everything and shine yur shoes too. The Fives are neat gizmos with all their wireless connectivity and dsp, but get real. These are NOT speakers for audiophiles. Serious music performance requires serious movement of air, and all the dsp tricks (handy I’ll admit, especially at low volume) in the world can’t make a 5” speaker sound like an 8” speaker of similar build. There’s a reason the Fives with all of their electronics only cost $799.

I run these via a tv/nvidia shield setup. The dynamic range of films means that the bass can’t get a little out of hand at times and take away from the clarity of the mids and highs they can produce which makes dialogue a little light for my taste. A simple solution is to insert a rca into the sub out which puts in a 80hz hpf and then place them a little closer to wall to compensate. For music, just take out the rca and they are great. Not a very neutral speaker but fun to listen to. The bottom end is pretty impressive for a 4.5inch.

Klipsch the Fives has bass that is bloated flabby and overwrought, until you plug-in an RCA jack to the sub out which cuts it off at I believe 70 Hz. PHEW, what a relief! Those little drivers we’re just working way too hard to do a job best left to a bigger driver. And then you are able notice how weak and hollow the mids are. Boy did I want to like the speakers. I boxed em back up and returned them. The treble was nothing special either. Pretty though.

Whenever I thought of Klipsch, I thought V-shaped sound. Owned a pair of RP600M, while I enjoyed the dynamic, punchy and detailed sound, I felt there’s something odd about the tonality. I didn’t know what the problem was until I ran a track by Bryan Adams (“Cuts Like A Knife” in MTV Unplug album), when the flute solo came, I could hardly hear the sound of the flute. Apparently there’s a big dip at around 1.7Khz in the frequency response. Sold the speakers and bought a pair of LS50. The LS50 has a more natural midrange tone.

The Rp500m has a 6.5 driver. The klipsch sixes also uses the 6.5 drivers. Can you give me your thoughts?
@ThomasAndStereo3 жыл бұрын
Never heard The sixes but I would expect the same kind of subwoofer feel type of bass with that speaker while the RP600m would have cleaner and more nuance bass.
@bradhuskers3 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasAndStereo But the sixes have the same size drivers as the 600. 6.5 The fives, which you tested, only have a 4.5 driver. So wouldn't the sixes sound cleaner like the 600.? Both have 6.5 drivers.
@ThomasAndStereo3 жыл бұрын
@@bradhuskers I don't think so. I am not sure they are made of the same material. Also, we know not all 6.5-inch woofers sound the same especially since one has a crossover and I think the Sixes does not. Either way, all this is speculation and until I actually hear The Sixes, your guess is as good as mine. Just for me logically, this active speaker is going in a different direction than their RP series because it is targeting a different audience.
@bradhuskers3 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasAndStereo The sixes are active. I was told that active speakers may be the future of speakers going forward because the amplifier is directly made for the speaker. Well, anyway, thanks for your help. If you do get a chance to review the sixes, I would really be interested in your fair and honest review. Thanks again.. Brad
@ThomasAndStereo3 жыл бұрын
@@bradhuskers I would say probably true for the masses. However, for audiophiles, it might not be, after all audiophiles are really picky with the sound and they spend a lot of time fine tuning it to their taste. Active is either you like the sound they are voiced or not.

I have both the The Fives and the rp600m and as usual Thomas nails it. Be careful turning them up because the woofer will run out of excursion. It moves a lot. The big sound out of the tiny Fives is actually shocking but of course not audiophile by any means. I had them in my bedroom for a while, but the low end is a bit much for low volume listening. Right now I have them as desktop speakers. If you keep the volume in check they are not too forward. They actually create a nice desktop soundstage.
@ThomasAndStereo4 жыл бұрын
Cool, I am so glad you are able to validate my observations. They do have quite a bit of slam. Yesterday, my daughter even came down to the basement and told me her chair was vibrating upstairs because I was playing these speakers loud.
@WhiteBubblySoup4 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasAndStereo Haha I don't think your opinion needs validating. The Fives are the first thing I recommend to non-audiophile normies looking to upgrade their home audio because of the all in one price, and the ease of use. Someone who is a total novice is usually wowed by these and is happy for quite some time.
@ThomasAndStereo4 жыл бұрын
When I had it on my desk, at low volume, I find the bass round and soft. It does create a pretty good soundstage nearfield and that surprised me because these are horn speakers. Not the same level as the SMSL Tabebuia but still pretty good.
