Man, is Popeye the Sailorman really that unknown these days? I'm a 90s kid and I still knew him growing up thanks to Cartoon Network's re-runs of his classic shorts. He did for spinach what Bugs Bunny did for carrots, and even what Mario did for mushrooms. And he's got one of the most iconic theme songs. I wouldn't be surprised if Mario's mushroom power-up gimmick came from Popeye's power boost from eating his cans of spinach. Anyway, I'm sure grateful for his contributions to Mario's creation.

Miyamoto originally called Mario Ossan, Japanese for "middle aged guy", it was the American localizers that came up with Jump Man.

Another unused prototypical name Miyamoto considered was "Mr. Video." He also got the name Mario from the American Nintendo workers too, as they got the name from the landlord of Nintendo's first warehouse supposedly. So they used the name for the demo screens in Donkey Kong Junior.

I like to headcanon that Jump-Man is Mario's father, because it better lines up with the Donkey Kong timeline. Mario and Luigi became plumbers in New Donk City, before moving to the Mushroom Kingdom looking for work (they heard it was full of pipes).

Jumpman's design always came across as a mascot for a pizza chain or frozen pizza brand imo. His limited color palette actually reminds me of Little Caesar's own mascot!

Good video, but I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of any mention of his design and model in Luigi's Mansion/Super Mario Sunshine towards the end. There's definitely notable differences between N64 Mario and GCN Mario, which was the real point where Mario's design stopped changing in significant ways.

I really like this video it's really interesting how certain things about a characters design can make or break a character and become instantly iconic and recognizable take mickey mouse for instance also another most recognizable character on the planet his head and ears and pants and shoes being instantly recognizable to everyone. Stuff like this I find really fascinating so thanks for the video👍I would love to see more like this like one for sonic even I already know the history for most of these characters bit I think it would be cool for other people to know too

The one with the long hair looks a lot the one that Captain Lou Albano played in the 90s.

The only thing that has also changed a bit is the colour of his moustache. From black to dark brown.

Another game that seems important: Super Mario Kart. Mario's color scheme varied from game to game before that, whether his shirt and overalls were red and blue or blue and red. The covers and in-game sprites didn't seem to agree yet, and the blue overalls are too light in Super Mario World. Super Mario Kart is the first one that seemed to finally decide on the red shirt and dark blue jeans, which then continued in Super Mario RPG and 64.

I love that in Super Mario Odyssey’s New Donk City pays homage to the original design.
