Its impressive data, but the height for the Zelda characters seems extremely off. Link (even as a teenager/adult) has always been fairly short compared to other characters (OOT Link being around 5'5 seems pretty accurate according to everything you see in the game and TP/BotW Link not being that much taller) So either the data is off or everyone from the Zelda series are giants lol. Like I said, still pretty impressive! :D

I figure that in game having the distinct difference in heights between Link and someone else like Ganondorf makes sense and looks good, but flat on a wall as part of a mural or decoration it probably looked off to see Link look shorter than what people expect. It's one thing to be accurate and another to be pleasing stylistically. I also thought Pikmin where supposed to be only inches tall, not over 1ft.

Nintendo should have kept the Pikmin small and hid them about all the other characters! A blue one peaking out of Ganondorf's armor. Another holding onto the hem of Peach's dress for dear life. That sort of thing. It woulda been cute and felt more accurate.. P.S. - There's NO WAY Link and Zelda are over 6 foot! (Though Twilight Princess' Zelda alway felt very tall to me.)

If you consider a few other characters, Kirby stands at around 2/3 of a foot, Pikachu stands at just 1', while Samus Aran stands at over 6'6", which if you compare this to her appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee, is actually taller than Zelda or Peach.

The Tokyo Store banner was always funny to me because all the heights are obviously wrong lol. Quite a humorous and fun video because of that though! Did you forget Koopa Troopa? I don't remember seeing him in the video. Although he _is_ driving a kart, so that might've made things too difficult to measure. In a video by The Bread Pirate, he calculates BOTW Link to be 158cm, which is super short! And it makes sense if you compare Link to a lot of other characters and NPCs in the game. I think they scaled up the Zelda characters to look more natural alongside Mario characters, who have very different proportional styles. A cool thing about Mario's height, is that, in a commercial for Mario Tennis Aces, with Rafael Nadal-- if you use pixel measurements to determine Mario's height based on Rafael's actual real world height... you also get around 155cm! Nintendo has been very consistent with Mario's height recently. I believe they even make him stand at 155-ish units in their game engines!

Olimar and pikmins' official heights as provided by the original Japanese booklet: Olimar, top of head - 19 mm - 0,75 in Olimar, top of helmet - 23 mm - 0,91 in Olimar, top of antenna - 38-40 mm - 1,50-1,57 in Pikmin, top of head - 13 mm - 0,51 in Pikmin, base of leaf - 22 mm - 0,87 in Pikmin, tip of leaf - ~27 mm - ~1,06 in Due to how the antenna glows in the image, it's hard to determine exactly where the end is. At 38 mm the glow starts fading, suggesting that's the actual top of the "ball" that glows, and 40 mm is the end of the glow, but we can't count glow as being part of one's height? The leaf is also uncertain because it bends into the background and doesn't stand straight up. Pikmins are said to be 3 cm and Olimar to be 4 cm.

Of course there’s gonna be a margin of error. I’m thinking the lack of a Z-axis is to blame here. If Ganondorf was closer to the “camera” than Mario was then that’s why he’d appear taller. It’s not like the image you studied was a side by side mugshot of each character. They’re joyfully strolling along the window. If you could imagine seeing the parade from the front I don’t think you’d be seeing everyone in a straight line.

Pixel measurements are exceptionally difficult and have a pretty big margin of error. When I was trying to measure my character height in Elder Scrolls Online (a max-height Orc), I wasn't able to accurately do so until housing was introduced, and mods allowed me to figure out in-game height accurate to within 1 cm. This allowed me to determine accurately that orcs are 226 to 240 cm in height (or around 7'5" to 7'10.5") -- which is pretty tall, but I'm not sure was actually canon for that race. This led me to the conclusion that in-game scaling might be very accurate with the right tools, but may need to be scaled to fit the lore. If it's possible to do so, you might see if there are modding tools or in-emulator tools that can grant a similar in-game measurement for 3D models to work with. Also, there's a trend to make bad guys (especially bosses) significantly larger than the protagonist to make them easier to track and target on screen, which might skew some results (but may still be interesting to track).

Thomas, in the Hyrule Historia, there's actually a somewhat official height chart made by Nintendo that I think was made during the early 90s. Mostly contains Zelda and a few Mario characters though and there's no unit of measurement. But it's something!

Yes, it's good that he uses metric as the basis, because the Nintendo developers are from Japan, and Japan is metric. Then also doing the conversion. But it was jarring when he switched the order. Metric first because Japan is metric made sense, but then when he listed all the heights, it was metric second. Even though he is also a metric user.

There's literally no way the characters on that mural are actually in scale. The Pikmin alone are hilariously oversized. 5'1" is almost an acceptable height for Mario. Taller than he looks like he ought to be in literally all games and adaptations, but much more reasonable than the alleged 5'10". Really though, no, this mural can't be used to scale characters against each other. There's still no meaningful context it provides.

It's always sad to see people claim Kirby to be 8 inches when he's "about 20 cm". But I have two critiques still, aside from the first about switching the order of units: 1. Using Mario has a reference when he varies in height. You should instead use the different characters with official consistent height, and then average out the result. 2. When simply measuring the height of a character walking, doesn't that affect their height? Aren't you shorter in the middle of a step?

Yeah, a pikmin is 13 mm to the top of the head, 22 mm to the top of the stalk, and about 3 cm to the top of the leaf/flower (this measurement was hard to confirm due to variety).

If you take link from breath of the wind's model and put it into a 3D modeling program (I used Blender) you get that he is around 5 ft 8

What does it say in metric? I'm curious if it's a whole round value of 10 cm, since the game is developed in metric after all. Just so we're clear, I don't care what 5 ft 8 converts to, I want to know what the original value in metric in Blender is. Plus as a modder myself, extracting models and importing them to Blender (or any 3D editing software for that matter) doesn't give their true sizes anyway. Some characters that are taller in game have smaller 3D models, and small characters can have large 3D models. Just as a warning.
