I really appreciate the fact that you allowed your viewers to see a not-so-perfect day. It certainly helps me to relax and just go with the flow in my photography rather than try and strive for perfection, which I'll never reach anyway. I love your black and white image most from this outing. It really helped the tree stand out. Keep on just being yourself, Tom, you truly are an inspirational photographer.

Those ever shot on film: - who had never opened the camera when the film was not retracted? - who had never shot a roll of film twice to get back from processing an unexposed role and a twice exposed role? Just I never filmed myself doing those mistakes, so this vid opens a completly new dimension of professionalism :-)
@adamsmith6594
@adamsmith6594 2 жыл бұрын
It has happened to me. Slack at the end of the roll where several images were overlayed and of course the inevitable sticker from the developer across the film telling you what you already knew had happened. But there was also a technique using the film release catch. Take a photo on half the values with you in it. Then hit the release catch. Then take another without you in it. Fully exposed you came out as a ghost. Then hoped you could re catch the film again.

I am 25 so digital photography has been the norm for most of my life where I have been old enough to take photography more seriously. I shoot a lot of film and haven't made this mistake in any recent time. However, I had a point and shoot 35mm camera when I was 7 and the amount of times I opened the back and exposed all of my images losing them all... its a pretty rough feeling!
@tudora5498
@tudora5498 2 жыл бұрын
Ok, while I definitely opened the camera and exposed film to light (several times - I apparently never learn), how on earth could one expose a film twice? In my experience, once you retract the roll back to the cartridge, the whole film goes in, so that you cannot replace it in the camera under normal circumstances..
@c.augustin
@c.augustin 2 жыл бұрын
@@tudora5498 There's an advantage in not totally retracting the film into the cartridge - easier to get it out for development (if you do it yourself). But I always mark my films in some way (ripping off a piece, or making a sharp crease into it).

Great video Thomas. I can tell you one of the most important lessons I learned in 60 years of photography and making mistakes like these, is to have separate bags for each process. I had one bag for film landscape, one bag for street, one bag for sports and now one bag for digital landscape. Everything I needed for each process was in each bag so nothing ever got forgotten or left behind. Also keep up the film photography. There is always a sense of accomplishment with film that you don't get with digital. Given the myriad of things that can go wrong with film, its always so great when it goes right.

Hello, Thomas. I am from the Midwest USA. I have been watching your channel for a year now. I want you to know how much your videos inspire me. Your honesty regarding the want to's and the failure at times to find compositions, helps me understand that it isn't just me. Your zest for your work comes through in your videos. I haven't had a decent film camera in years and my son bought me my first digital camera earlier this year. To see your passion for photography using film makes me smile. Having ancestry from England, Scotland and Ireland , on my mothers side, drew me to your channel so that I could see the beauty of the places they lived. I absolutely *love* shooting on film, but I think I can only do so by completely embracing all the uncertainty and risks of that process. With digital, you're much more likely to spot something going wrong while you're shooting, so as long as the subject isn't really fleeting like wildlife you can correct things and retake the shot. With film, there are so many more things that can go wrong, and so many of them can be things that you'd have no idea about until after development. I have so much respect for you for putting all of it into your videos, not only for the personal honesty it takes to not sugar-coat your online appearance, but also because it makes the beautiful shots you took all the sweeter knowing all the challenges and hardships it took to get them.
