I drove my camper van to Sweden to buy a Hasselblad Xpan II panoramic film camera. In this video I collect my new camera, explain why I drove so far for it and shoot a few frames of Kodak Ektarchrome E100 slide film. I hope you enjoy this landscape photography video.

Hi thomas Some advice from a long time X-Pan II user. The 45mm lens hodd fits also perfectly on the 90mm lens A Canon jack electrical release fits the X-Pan II You should definitely find and buy the special Hasselblad center filter for the 45mm. It remove totaly vignetting on film, and so you get better quality scans. Luigi in Italy makes (even today) fabulous fine leather half cases for different X-Pan models, with diffferent options. Often changing format on the same film draines massively the batteries (film has to be wound and rewound at each change), so you have ever to carry 2 sets of spare batteries when mixing a lot panos and classical framing. Enjoy your X-Pan

For your next trip to Sweden - book in advance! You can often get a discount when you book both the ferry between Denmark and Germany as well as the crossing over the Öresund bridge to Sweden. I suggest maybe a trip to Öland and a visit to Stora Alvaret (the great Alvar). Unique nature and a good excuse to go camping!

Love this mini series! 📷 Since I'm from southern Sweden, let me guess the locations from the two photo shoots in Sweden. The first two pictures I guess were shot at Odensjön near Röstånga, in the middle of Skåne (Scania County). It's a truly magical lake surrounded by steep hillsides covered with trees. The last shots could be from any forest really, but given the steepness in the last shot I guess it could be shot at Skäralid National Park a few miles away from Odensjön. Anyway, great shots! Looking forward to next episode! 😊

Man, I've had my XPAN for about 1,5 years now and I totally understand your excitement. And I can assure you that the feeling still holds up. You start seeing the world in panoramic images every time you hold this camera in your hands. It feels nice, it's a beauty to look at and the lenses, while they are not the fastest, are so freakin' sharp that it blows my mind every time. One thing I recommend doing is shooting vertical panos every now and then in certain situations. They make for some nice prints!

It irks me to no end that Fuji (who collaborated in the building of the XPan) don't have the 65:24 TX-1 crop on their APS-C cameras. That'd be delightful. Sure, it's not hard to crop in post, but it's not as easy to compose. Getting that aspect ratio as black bars on the EVF would make the experience a lot nicer. However, I've recently been experimenting on my new X-Pro3. If I stick my TTArtisan 17mm lens on there, but tell it that I've put a 26mm lens, and then tell it to shoot in 16:9 aspect ratio, the frame lines in the OVF are very close to where they ought to be for the 65:24 crop, and the full width of the OVF is pretty close to the field of view of the lens. Makes composition a lot easier. Not as much as proper XPan aspect ratio in-camera would be, but better than nothing. I still really want the crop in-camera, though. Again, Fuji helped build these. Honor that legacy on the FX line as well as GFX.

@@nicokremers7150 I'm too invested in other systems to switch, alas. I just feel really passionately that far more cameras should offer more in-camera crops. Like, is even a custom aspect ratio impossible? Swap between 67 or 617 at will, or maybe 16:10, which shows up some places, not just 16:9. I know some folks like 5:4. There's so many options, and it seems like it should be trivial for the camera, but yet...

My current GAS fixation is on a Kase system similar to yours (although I haven't completely ruled out the Wine Country system) and a proper set of legs that will get my heaviest camera & lens up to eye level and above. And don't get me started on film. I'm an old Mamiya guy so beyond something like the X-Pan there's a must acquire compulsion for an RB67 and a two body small press kit (Super 23 & Universal) with 5+ lenses and at least a half dozen backs including the polaroid back for the Universal and ground glass/sheet film setup for the Super23.

What do you think of vertical panorama as a concept? I've used this on my phone camera for castle interiors and this produces quite a look, although there's a risk of some distortion around the middle if the image. This could be seen as a feature rather than an issue.

Far too self critical Thomas, any one of the photos you showed in this video would make me very happy to have taken. I really like the b&w jetty photo 🙂

Another great video as usual, Tom. However I cannot believe you missed the opportunity to use 'it will all *pan* out' at 7:04 🤣

So you've spent the money saved on the purchase of the Xpan II for your trip to collect it (and get the opportunity to do some video and shooting) - sounds like a perfekt deal … 😁
