I dived into macro...and made my landscape giant. I found it slows the walk, sharpens the eye and rewards in unexpected way showing you things you never saw before '')
@freetibet10003 жыл бұрын
That’s a great tip! I like to play tricks on my on mind sometimes and put the “wrong” lens on in order to force myself out of the comfort zone.
@zeballos57573 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting. I am feeling the same way as Thomas. I took a break. Told a friend I was in a photography slump and she said well why don’t you shoot things that you normally wouldn’t, like macro. So I did just that. Taking a break and not trying so hard when you are feeling that way helps too.
@paynescaping89573 жыл бұрын
2020 has become my macro year too. I bought a slider and extension tubes and have been doing stacks of like 80-100 images. Patience and sometimes you get the most wonderful results. I have discovered that there are macro subjects just everywhere if you look hard enough.
@Dug66666663 жыл бұрын
Its good to have alternate subject matter when inspiration or circumstances fluctuate. Mine has been urban, particularly industrial areas. In fact I have yet to go back to landscape. It would be hard I imagine to stray too far though when you have established a landscape viewer base. I bought a macro lens for the same reason. I think its a huge bonus to photograph what your eye naturally wonders towards, its not fine detail as it turns out for me it seems.
@will93573 жыл бұрын
I did the same and finally bought a long macro lens, and it took my local environment (I live near Houston, TX) from 'near unshootable' thickets everywhere I look, to having pretty decent potential. This area still isn't the easiest landscape to shoot, but I tend to get a couple shots everyday, even when I'm out doing other tasks.

Tom what l like about you is that you walk the walk, as well as the talk. You get out there and take pictures. To many other KZbin photographers lately are just talking the talk. Their whole video is increasingly becoming some sort of philosophical monologue about photography, and their photos are increasingly becoming bland. Talking the talk, but no walk. When most people go to galleries its the image that captures the eye, not the little note beside the image explaining the 'philosophy' behind the image. Keep taking photos Tom it's what you're brilliant at.
@freetibet10003 жыл бұрын
I agree! For the audience it’s always about the image itself. If it speaks to us, or not. Unfortunately, with the Internet we have all been bombarded with millions of images by now and it’s a real challenge to come back to that “fresh” look on an image again. For me, photography have become more of a tool for me to bring my mind back to be in the moment again and the outcome has become less important, as a result. As a result I still thoroughly enjoy my photography because its more of an exploration than bringing home just another “trophy”. Does that make sense?
@vincephillips43313 жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong in explaining a journey, and what motivated a photographer to take an image, and this is what l like about your channel is that you do that beautifully, but you don't try to dress up your image if you're not happy with it. No matter how hard it was to be obtained. The trouble is it's when bland images are coupled with some sort of motivational philosophy on how it was created. For me if the image is bland no amount of philosophical chit chat about the image is going to fill the cracks in the photos weaknesses. The image is the bottom line, and not the words.

I’ve been a watcher and then a subscriber to your channel for a few years. Love your videos, tips, but mostly your dedication to the craft! Photography can be a mind-game... in fact I think it is a mind-game for those of us who practice it as a craft - professionally or amateur (that’s me). Just when I think I can find nothing of interest to shoot, I take a walk in a nearby familiar forest or hiking trail and try to open my mind to the endless possibilities around me like I’m seeing it for the first time. More often than not I do what you did in this video - I find something I like and I feel grateful for the simple privilege and experience of shooting it. That recharges me and reinvigorates me. Happy New Year, good riddance to 2020!

As you showed, beauty can be found anywhere, anytime. In Canada, I am pretty lucky to be surrounded by abundant, beautiful, natural landscapes, but even here lockdowns have restricted me a great deal. No travel is tough....on millions, if not billions of us. I very much enjoy your channel Tom, in part, because you “keep it real.” Describing your ups and downs is a strength of your content. Happens me every year. The days are short, the skies are grey and the light is flat. I’m lucky to live in a place with loads of varied scenery (beaches, sand dunes, mountains, woodland, lakes etc.). During the first lockdown, the weather was lovely and I spent every evening out and about (within 2 km). I also got back into doing some wildlife photography). The only day I went out this month was a day with heavy fog (snap!). Got 4-5 photos I liked. Happy with that. Now I have nothing to post on Instagram and I really can’t be arsed. But I know there’ll be a day coming soon where I wake up and the sun is shining, the clouds are fluffy and my car is full of fuel. And I’ll be happy as a pig in sh1t. Chin up, Thomas. The sense of “struggle” may come from the fact that you want something that you don’t have at that moment. For me, a feeling of creativity arises when I leave my mind completely open and don’t expect anything specific to happen. My way of photography is to just put on my rubber boots and walk right out and see what happens! No expectations. If something appears that intrigues me, I take picture of it. If nothing intriguing happens, no big deal! I think, sometimes we are afraid that maybe we will never be able to feel that creative rush again. But the human mind is so changeable that I’m pretty sure it will happen again. The problem only comes when we want to experience a certain thing “on demand” sort of speak, isn’t it?

I like what you put out and I know I will watch your videos. Happy New Year!

Time to give ICM a second try? Can often make something out of nothing. Having said that, I've not made an image since early November... 🤔 Tier 4 isn't going to help creativity in the slightest though 😬

KZbin keeps your regular? I hadn't heard that before. :-)

Maybe you should stop selling out and doing stupid sponsors and your business might be doing better? You are now a KZbinr and not a photographer

Why not try and change up what your shooting, try some night star shots instead and try to perfect that, winter is a great time for seeing the stars in the UK

Nice images. I'm not sure the second one works - perhaps you need a macro lens to show off the texture of the lichen more. The highlights on the edges of the lichen feel a bit too strong and the focus seems to be hit or miss on some of the lichens (easy to understand given the subject). Overall, I like the subject and the comp but perhaps the lens choice/processing lets it down a bit.

I laughed so much after I read your comment about the gloves in the hat. - I struggle with my mental health sometimes. I am a professional wedding photographer and 2020 hasnt been very kind to many of us in the industry, I feel your pain bud. Its tough out there, but you got this, keep posting videos for you, not for anyone else, its your channel and you do what you want, if people leave its up to them, you are in control... Here is to an amazing 2021 ;)

Hi Thomas - I think this is a crust fungus, rather than a lichen, but I'm not a good enough mycologist to tell you the species.

Both photos turned out fantastic, love them both! Funny I had a similar moment. Was out the other night to see the moon and taking the dog out for a bathroom break and noticed wicked fog had rolled it. Grabbed a small light and my camera and spent a good half hour in sub freezing temperatures dinging around and came back into the house stoked. Inspiration comes from random places, and we have to grab it when we can these days since it has been harder than ever to find :)

Be careful, I got so fussy I pretty much stopped, good to see you pushing through it.

I feel exactly the same. I struggled a lot to go out 3 days ago. And struggled a lot to find some good point, a real motivation. But then I just enjoy the fact I'm out in the middle of a wood. The sound of nature. Is that I miss the most

Hi Tom, you videos this year have really helped me with motivation to get out there. Working a full time job while trying to grow at photography has been difficult. Sometimes just watching your videos during a lunch break has really helped me push myself. Also got your book and absolutely love how personal the intro was while also got me thinking about my own situation. During 2021 I am hoping to grow further and try and get ready to take the leap and just give photography and go full time in 2022. Especially with you being fairly local to myself has shown what I can accomplish without having to travel far. Wish you all the best for the new year.

Haha your waffle around the 16.00 mark made me laugh “Subscribe for more depressing content”😂 Hey Thomas.. There are a hell of a lot of us with you and have the same thoughts at the moment. Keep your chin up, press onward and suck it up. That’s what I keep telling myself anyway🤷♂️ We will get through this time and we will all be stronger for it. Great video and honest thoughts. Well done fella👍

Hi mate great video!! 👍🏻 . . Random question lol... What gloves are those you have? Looks like you can pull back the finger and thumb ends? That would be very useful for me when out and about trying to vlog and adjust certain things on those colder days. Thanks dude and Happy New Year 😊👍🏻

OK, comment #2 on the subject of not. being able to stop when needing to take an image. Yesterday, I was up on Bodmin Moor, (temperature 2C) on a single track road with passing places looking for images and wanting to take pictures of the twisted Oak Trees there. Unfortunately, there's a vehicle coming the other way about 200yards away and it has pulled in, so it wants me to pass. Bugger! So I drive all the way past it, then turn round and drive back (sigh) The pics were OKish, but I need to go back when the light is a little less harsh. Postscript: for me 2020 has been great photographically as I am motivated by trying to become a professional. Less good however in many other ways.

I feel you man. Used to run out no matter what with my camera but to be honest this year has left me feeling unfulfilled and been looking for a change myself.

Never apologise Tom, I think the reason you connect with so many is due to you being authentic and genuine. Therefore we are here for your lows and your highs. I completely empathise with your current predicament and experience similar feelings, I recently took a break, partly new job, mostly frustration! I discovered your channel just I started in photography and it's been incredibly inspiring and helpful. Whichever direction you decide to go! Do what's best for you!
