Hello Everyone
+This is Part Three ( of Three) of a start-to-finish drawing and watercolor painting demonstration recorded in real-time. In this video, I cover intention, composition, value design, atmosphere, and color scheme - as well as interpretation, formatting, narrative, drawing, sketching, perspective, etc.
+The subject is a winter view - based on memory - of my childhood home. The root lesson here is a way to paint from personal experience rather than simply from visual observation
Thanks for watching!
Tom

Thank you so much for allowing us the opportunity to watch you work, very educational. The final glaze looked so terrifying but it worked out great. Interesting that your naples yellow looks so different from the one I have (van Gogh). Good to know.

Loved watching the final part to see it all come together. I was holding my breath when you added that final glaze, but I knew it would work for you. For me.... I would have been starting again!!

I always wondered how you achieved such straight edges; I see that you use a small flat brush. Why didn’t I think of that!

Thank you for posting this Thomas, it was a fascinating watch as always! And a beautiful painting. I noticed that you wetted your whole palette. I recently watched an interview with Hazel Soan and she advised against wetting pigments unless absolutely necessary as too much water (or water applied too frequently) breaks down the gum arabic and ruins the paint making it crumbly and unusable. What’s your take on this if you don’t mind me asking? Also - I just read that Daniel Smith lunar black can be manipulated with a magnet. How cool is that?! 😁 I wonder if it’s the same with luner violet! I’m going to try it! Best wishes, Laura

Yes - i usually wet the whole palette just to be certain I have access to all pigments as long as possible. It is true, that over time pigments will separate from their binders . But in my experience, this only happens after a great many months and if they are not used regularly. So I tend not to work about it

I learn so much from your dialogue, I wondered: Do you talk to yourself while painting, when the camera isn't rolling?
@thomaswschaller
@thomaswschaller 2 ай бұрын
Thank you - And it's a great question. No. I don't at all. I prefer silence But after teaching and giving public demonstrations for so many years, I've developed a little skill in painting and talking at the same time. But it is still a little awkward. and I am not convinced I do either particularly well
