A start-to-finish lesson on interpreting photographic reference into a communicative watercolor painting. The subject is The Lake in NYC's beautiful Central Park.
The goal of the painting was to show ways in which the painter can design a work based on a combination of physical real-world observation, memory, and pure imagination.
+This painting was done on Baohong Watercolor Paper - rough surface - 300gsm :
+15X22 inches
+Pigments by Daniel Smith
+Brushes by Escoda and Neef
+Palette by House of Hoffman
+Sketch pencils by Blackwing and Faber-Castell
+Sketchbook by Stillman + Birn
Thank you for watching! Tom

I like your brush work on the trees and you color choices. The El Dorado towers create a nice focus and unity to the work. Thanks so much for a thoughtful approach.

Not only are you an amazing artist, you are a great teacher, Thomas. Thank you so much for sharing. I will be watching your tree section several times as I have struggled with getting the organic shapes you demonstrate.

Wow, thank you so much for this video. I have watched so many watercolor videos and tutorials over the past year or so, as I try and learn. And while many have been really good, I can say that I learned more from watching this than all the others combined. Something about the way you described your process as you painted, really made certain things click in place for me. Your paintings are incredible and you have such a great way of explaining and teaching

@@shereenzaky4126 My work is represented by Gallery 71 here in NYC. There are not too many galleries that I know that show primarily watercolor art. Thank you for being the best watercolor artist in the world. And the teacher too. I actually painted this painting, following your instructions..), anyway I didn't even have rose madder (which I have now :)), but I used Quin Rose instead, and just today I added lavender, which I ordered after watching this video. .In the beginning my paper got all swollen :), and I thought none of it would be good..but when the paper dried I continued..I even got these beautiful green colors like you..I'm very very happy with my painting, I can't believe I did it..Best regards from Croatia.

Thanks so much. Glad you're working through it! Quin Rose - if used lightly - could be as good or better. But to be serious, in my teaching, I urge us all not to use terms like "best" - I do appreciate the compliment but we are all different and it is not a competition in that way - We should mostly be concerned only with competing against ourselves

My favorite comic book artist was John Byrne. Someone asked him why he doesn’t do teaching videos and he basically said “ I don’t know how I do it, so I wouldn’t know what to say”. Being able to do what you do ( teach) is a very different skill and you do it super well. It ain’t easy:) Thanks, these videos are a treasure

First, John Byrne is a badass! Love his work, too! But more to the point - Thank you so much. That means a lot. "Teaching"... Well, I don't really think that what I do is teaching. I'm just sharing with others what it is that works for me. I don't have answers. I just have questions that - when I asked them to myself - I saw my work improve. And I'd like to help others do the same

Thank you for making real speed tutorials! I just finished painting this one and will definitely attempt the other ones you uploaded so far. It really makes a big difference to be able to see how wet your paper is, how you apply paint to achieve the final effects. I could not learn it from a book.

Thank you so much for this. Once again, I’m just blown away by your ability to express yourself in watercolor. I remember the last time I watched you ..I bought the paper you’re using. In fact I bought two of them in block form..thinking that at some point in time, I might be able to use them in the same way you have used the paper to bring out beauty in your work. I don’t think you could paint on any kind of paper that would be bad, the painting would be good, no matter what ..in fact it would be excellent. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this video series together. I intend to watch it a number of times today Blessings and successes your way!

I would like to know what colors are in your palette (like here for example)? Perhaps a good idea for a "Palette video"?🫣 Because you said, for example, that the big yellow area on top right is Naples Yellow, but my Daniel Smith Naples Yellow looks so very different, it has a kind of reddish touch, but your yellow here is very bright "yellow" 🤔 Or I wonder what all these brown colors are or the blues and the 3 darks at the bottom 😅 ... sorry for this probably stupid beginner question 😢
