The original reason the Army carried 12ga #9 shot cartridges in the inventory was for riot use, where the manuals specified firing them into the pavement in front of the rioters to pepper their legs with birdshot. The technique was taught well into the 1970's. These submachine gun cartridges were designed for the exact same purpose.

+Dor Aran OK... So, there's no corruption in the USA, and it's armed populace protects it from beeing entirely taken over by corporations, funding both sides of the political chessboard, largely ignoring the wishes of the populace, force fed debilitating propaganda through tititainment... And that doesn't predate tititainment at all, after all, the so called "robber barons" got their name purely by accident!! I do believe a populace that's able to resist is a good thing, but come one, the USA is a place as corupt as any, if not more... The ability to do so is nothing without adequate information, the ability and willingness to organize beyond the individual or familial level, with decent opsec, and it's a last resort thing, having close knit social links, a rugged and resilient supplies of food and water, not for a few people, but for the vast majority, etc, are prerequisite conditions! The fact is,, even in so called developped countries, if our economical overlords cynisism towards us, the populace, turned from apathy to overt hostility, we would be fucked... Now, food is in the hands of a few corporations, water is mainly that thing that comes out the faucet, all our social relations are displayed for every agency to see, etc... IE if it turned from ugly to worse, from the choice between mindless work or poverty for the masses, to for example, a neo malthusian society who's elite thinks, that we're too numerous, and for the sake of themselves, and mother nature, ut would be so much better with far fewer people (not hard to see that coming) Attrition of the "surnumeraries", ie the poor that are replacable by higher efficiency processes, not manning the military/police, or replacable by drones, not actively producing food for the elite, or replacable by some automation, wouldn't sadly be that hard to do... Even if these madmen where quaint enough not to eradicate them manu militari, just turning off the supplies would do the trick, famine, anguish, chaos and violence, while standing from afar, watching the horror, and if need be, finishing the few survivors... In a way, such types of situations allready exists, in warzone that aren't popular in western media for geopolitical interests disguised as humanitarianism... Many of those warzones have an affluence of weaponry, shoddy or not... But the main weapon that would be in dire need would be knowledge, and understanding what's at hand! And that happens to societies that are fare more agrarian, and thus resiliant than ours... For example, take Biafra, in the 70's! US, British and French Petroleum interests couldn't get to a pleasing resolutiuon between them, in a place that was mostly peacefull, where ethnical divides where relatively calm, and lines rather blurred, some where animsts that where suposedly christian, but mostly animists, others where "sort of" muslims but mostly still animists, and all went well.. Oil companies and their governemental backers pumped in weaponry, and trumped up the tiny divides, up to full civil war, while our media, when it talked about it, played dumb as to why the fighting erupted, Now, 40 years later, we no longer fuinnel money, ammo, and weapons, it's stilla low intensity warzone, It came back to buisness as usual for the instigators, Shell, Total, etc, have reached agreements on how to cut the cake, the only worry they have is that the damn locals don't behave and try to steal oil, or take hostages, from time to time! Why? Strangely, they now have REAL reasons to hate each other and avenge the bloodshed, still 40 years later... in fact, way more than when that travesty started! Had they had the knowledge of what was planned against them, how they where about to be manoeuvered for political and economical goals, maybe they could have reacted apropriately, and driven off the envoys that came to sow discord, "hey, yes, we believe they stole great grampa's donkey, but fuck off and leave, we don't want any trouble with them anymore, it's settled, now go, we see what you want! Leave, or we pump you full of lead!" that could have worked, and they'de be happier, that coast wouldn't be destroyed by constant war and continual oil spills from crudely diverted pipelines, but it was far too easy to fuck them over. And that's if the war is waged covertly, at least it's starting... If, overnight, the people wanted more than a parody of democracy, be it it Latin America, or in the US, or elsewhere, with a political power firmly believing that it's their way, or the highway, even if everyone's disagreeing with them, if the army follows orders, how would the people fare against it? A well organized army, with it's communications, mobility, immense firepower, etc is something tremendous! Especially if it is fucked up enough to follow orders of maniacs that do not to care for a single soul! The only hope rests in having military personnel and police thinking in solidarity with it's people, instead of following totalitarian orders, but sadly, throughout history, times and times again, Enlisted or Conscripts fired upon their brothers to protect interersts far diffrent from their own! It usually is as easy as combining the learnt obedience from basic indoctrination and a wee bit of geography, pick a regiment from place X to supress events from elswhere.... Not to be pessimistic, but huge hegemons don't usually actually work pro bono, and the social structures of South America had little to do with how bright it light United Fruit's greedy eyes! Even places that have high education standards, high literacy, access to decent food and water can turn into shitholes pretty fast is a big bully, or two, toys with it enough! (For example, did you know how good Afghanistan ranked in the 60's, in healthcare, overall literacy and scholarization, girls scholarization, infrastructure, etc... It was the leader in those fields in the region, was a mostly secular society, that was on the verge of industrializing. It also was a society that traditionally valued military prowess, and was far from hoplophobic, look at the good that did to them, once the US and USSR decided to sacrifice them on the "cold" war's altar, to, to quote Brzezinsky, "give to the russians their Vietnam"! The responsability is well shared, the west recruited nutters to precisely do what the USSR wouldn't tolerate in that state, and what intelligence said would provoke the Afghan govt in demanding "aid" to the USSR Then financed and funnelled in more and more religious zealots/nutters, to "fight the soviets" that where drawn in precisely by the actions of these nutters! The USSR provided the niceties of a modern army going after a militia hiding amongst a civilian population that hadn't asked anything! The USSR got their vietnam, bravo Brzezinsky,, and look how that population, AND the rest of the world had to suffer for it! Then the tide reversed, it became the US and it's allies that provided the dose of airstrikes, ground assaults, etc, against the monster they helped form! Wars are most often fought on lies, the ability to resist armed action, with weapons if need be, is good, but there won't even be resistance if well enough crafted lies have been sown beforehand

It might be more conmfortable to reject criticism "en-bloc" and pretend it's hate for a country, where it's just one will derive if he looks at the past century's history, from a modicum of diverse viewpoints! By the way where do I say that the US is the sole problematic country? nowhere, you self centered brat! (the X is a red excuse should allready appear ridiculous imho, now that the wall 'ss been torn down since quite a while!) What I do say is Corporatocracies and huge hegemons that feel the right to do whatever, no matter what their population or the rest of the world wants are the problem, currently the US are the Banksters Ace in the deck of cards, before, it was the British Empire, tomorrow, China, maybe! Plugging your ears and singing lalala won't change the fact that the same top tier banksters that fucked your granpa during the 30's crisis, and fucked either you or your relatives during the subprimes crisis will fuck you over, again if there's a buck to make, as they do anywhere else, and no "american exceptionalism" will protect you if your hometown becomes the next hotbed of corporate/police state fuckery. Read what Ret. Gen. Smedley Butler had to say about how he got used! Discard my opinion all you want, but before you do so, read what a Major General of the U.S.M.C. had to say of the wars he was ordered to fight! My oh my, Socialism and Communism seem to be your pet obsessions! You do know McCarthysm is a bit passé, right? Forget that you define them in a way the rest of the world doesn't concurr, in a way, Crony capitalism, to you, is socialism... The codependency of "big buisness" and might to defend it, even unfairly is quite an old affair, and has nothing to do with Socialism, it predates the concept! It has often gone hand in hand in enforcing unfair trades, prices or wages, For example, take The East India Company? It had it's own army! It needed it to undertake extreme and oftentimes unwelcomed buisness... That company was incorporated in 1600 Now, if socialism was theorized in the 17th and Elizabethan England was socialist, be my guest! Bit later, Dickensian England, how the poor got poor, not through state mesures, but because early industrialists prefered to invest their profits in India instead of keeping the production machine up to date in the 19th century, win win to them, high labor costs in the united kingdom dropped, and costs in India where laughable. The state then had to pick up the pieces and protect those that destroyed a society where wealth was relatively distributed among the commoners, and dug a huge gap between themselves, and factory workers... That wasn't because state tried implement socialism... That was because top tier financiers and industrialists laughed at what they did to the workers that did cost a pretty penny 30 years earlier, whilst the rest of the polite society was either gesticulating with charity, or blaming the poor for their situation through so called" Social Darwinism" Ife "if they're poor, it's because they're dumb, and biologically inferior" was an often printed line of thought, nevermind that all those "idiots" fathers weren't poor and lived quite well! Through massification of production, work that was high pay was now paying just above starvation... So market price fair price... on the paper it's nice, IRL, once an actor is big enough, it's easy to rig! Back to United Fruit Co. et al.. That was the text book definition of Crony Capitalism! If you really want to play Limbo to the point of having the head stuck in your arse, you could say "It's socialism for the rich, and tyranny for the poor" But you should note that both in the US and in south america, wealth redistribution through State was at an al time low! -> ie not socialism! I could just as well call what happened in USSR and Cuba "State Capitalism", as instead of responding to shareholders it answered only to the nomenklatura, wich wiped out and replaced the bourgeoisie, No worker had any more say in it... It's on the same level as your way to call everything and anything "socialism" it would be derisive isn't it? To have some more fun, you cite the medical system in Cuba, please, bear in mind that it had to function under an Embargo, for fifty and some years, and then go see W.H.O. data! See how it compares to other Health systems in the region, Compare to the situation of former US backed dictatorships, then and now, now that you pulled THE former USSR backed dictatorship out of your sleeve (without taking the slightest care to see if what you supposed was true!)! Life expectandy there? higest in the region, at UNDER an EMBARGO! Life expectancy at birth, In 2007, (World Bank data): Cuba, 78.26 years; World, 68.76 years; And for comparison: Latin America and Caribbean, 73.13 years; high income OECD countries, 79.66 years; United States, 77.99 years Infant mortality in Cuba, for the 2000 - 2005 period: 6.1 per 1000 in Cuba, and, for comparison, 6.8 per 1000 in the United States! I could go on and on all day with data! I guess that for example, The Lancet, The British Medical Journal, or the BBC, along with afformentionned international organizations are lying just to spite you, as do UN, the World Health Organisation, the World Bank and nearly all data! Fact is, you are liable to be better treated in CUBA under embargo, than say, in Columbia, or in Brazil, etc... If not of the wealthy minority, it sucked, and still sucks, if "indio" in some places of central and south america, you won't ever see an hospital! As fucked up as it is, It's still best to be ill in Cuba, than in a Rio slum, but worse still, you've got a better life expectancy in Cuba than in some places of the great US of A!... Not saying that life's great there, but when you pick up examples, test their validity! Now, Quote me where I recommand a communist system? YOU CAN'T What I say, IS, pure laissez faire capitalism, on paper, paradisiac, to you, at least, nearly ALLWAYS result in Crony Capitalism, to you known as "socialism" No mistery there, who has the means to fund political campaigns and lobby accordingly, on both sides? (usually not the working poor, nor mom and pops store owners, craftsmen, small buisnesses and the rest of the middle class!) You don't obey to people that cash in several hundred bucks to your campaign, but to people that cash in millions? You bet! What happens when these wealthy contributors fund both sides, and are mass media owners? Cosmetic and artificial divides, plus tittytainment drivel to keep the people occupyed, while the legislative process is utterly rigged in favor of those wealthy contributors!

Looking at data from the world health organization, not Mother Jones, or whatever, makes me an apologist? Pull your head out of your Arse! What I'd' concede to your doctor friend is, he'll probably make more money elsewhere, but are we looking at health, or at professional statute? Refute the data! (if you can) by the way, look at what the rest of the world had to say of the US embargo strengthening of the nineties, especially on Health... Despite that, the life expectancy there is what it is (better than in some parts of the States (or, than in Glasgow, Scotland, so that you see I don't have beef with the US per se, but with aritificial poverty, poor education and the like) By the way, your beef with Cuba, as 'murricans is a bit laughable to the rest of the world, I'm based in France, To troll a bit, I'l just say Boohoo, the mafia lost it's casinos in the fifties, and since then, their US congressmen friends can't sleep till that travesty is corrected! Now, as a point of comparison on purely South American medical situation. I'll tell you that, while your doctor friend had gone to the US to more freshly painted clinics and way better pay, Things I can sort of relate to, a good friend of mine is the son of a Colombian physician, why is he in France you might ask? You might think for the pay too, you'd be wrong, mainly because he met a French Wife, while he had to FLEE Columbia, because armed thugs, under the protection of the US backed government, firebombed his practice, not onece, but thrice over the years, and began to be more insistant, to teach him not to treat the Indians! So yeah, in a place there's healthcare for anyone, but the Doctors only get paid 1,5 time the (low) median salary, boohoo In the Other, there's enough racist fucks in the institutions to cover up for thugs that want the peons, poor, hardly paid, AND DEPRIVED of ANY healthcare, and are ready to consistently use violence to further those goals in some places... That's not Mother fucking Jones that told me that, that's life, confronting reality, and searching for data before going for gut feelings! I'm not defending the political system there, I'm just stating facts, on the health situation, It sucks waaaaaaaay less to be cuban than say, Haitian. Or way less to be Swedish, instead of Kurd... It's data that comes from all the relevant, non partisan institutions, the UN (through many of its arms, World Health Organisation, the UNDP,) Add to that data from the World Bank, The IMF, British Medical Association, the Medical Press at large, You can even read info from the CIA world fact book if you like! For medical data, read page 2 and 3 of the Cuban chapter from the most current PDF edition! If they are "Castro Apologists", who the hell isn't! Now, if in this you see rampant communism in that, Learn to READ, you fail at analysis and logic, that's a bit sad, not final though, just try harder! I don't feel this Channel is exactly the place for such a silly discussion between the parody of a conservative that you are, seing everything that isn't himself as a "red" according to a thought grid that was propagandized in the fifties! It's a place ripe with interesting videos, technical curiosities and rarities, and the occasional dark humor, too bad you do think The United Fruit Co. was either Justified to open fire on a disarmed populace, as some seem to do, (yet, they might be trolling), or was "enabled by socialism" wich was inexistant both in the home state of that Company, the USA, and the countries it operated in! Drown in your own bile, or have a nice day, it's your choice to make, I won't loose any sleep on your lunacy, it's not only the "leftist" media you despise wich by the way I don't regularly read, I mostly don't read the american press as a whole... In the meantime, go take a hike, breathe, watch how the nature still looks nice in some places!

The original Riot Act, in the UK, required that it be read aloud to the crowd both to indicate LEO's authorization to enforce it, and as a warning to the crowd. If the crowd did not disperse, force could then be used. US riot laws do not need to be read out loud to be enforced, so someone at some point likely associated the sweeping of riot rounds across the ground as our equivalent 'warning' for the crowd to disperse or get a bunch of rubber shot to the shins.

They are basically a normal 40x46mm grenade with a rubber top instead of an actual grenade. They are meant to be fired into crowds blindly to knock some people out and disperse the crowd. Turns out that actually hitting someone with that directly is pretty much deadly...
@Gakulon9 жыл бұрын
+Mirdarion Don't forget they would also use tear gas and rubber bullets, which went at about the same speed as regular ammo, to disperse the crowds as well.

Interesting. I knew a few old labor activist steelworkers at J&L Aliquippa Works who told me about Pinkertons and the the Cossacks ( the Coal and Iron Police, who eventually became the Pennsylvania State Police) using Thompsons on the streets of Ambridge (American Bridge, obviously a company town), Pennsylvania. Incidentally, Ambridge once had the highest per capita number of bars in the USA. Coincidence?
@WildBillCox137 жыл бұрын
Henry Frick was ordered by Carnegie to evict striking workers/vandals from his premises in Homestead. He engaged the Pinkertons to the purpose and death by ballistics ensued. Strikers, union organizers . . . these were systematically Blacklisted and prevented from working forever after. Men who agitated for better worker conditions in the mines, in the steel and paper and textile mills, and in packing plants, were beaten in the streets by gangs hired by company owners; It was an age of small minds with large appetites. Not like today . . .

Rustless didn't start appearing on Peters Ammunition until about 1930, maybe a bit earlier, with the development of commercial non-corrosive primers. In the 1926 Peters catalog, however, the Thompson .45 Riot Ammunition was assigned the telegraph ordering code "THUG". That's hysterical!

thanks Ian, another great video! thanks to your in depth looks at guns I now understand how a bolt works! I just have one problem, I really don't know a lot about guns. I enjoy their technical aspects, but I find I often get confused by some of the terms you use. I was just wondering if you'd be able to do some videos for people like myself, teaching us some of the basics and the terms we might need to understand (my most recent problem was 'belt revolver'). otherwise I just wanted to say I enjoy these videos a bunch, and thanks for the work you do.

+Blathilzar The presenter, Ian, got those words into his head by reading books =) So you can do the same. There are a lot of starter books on firearms function, often in the form of illustrated popular encyclopedias. Although they often contain some nonsense (popular firearms publications sure as hell aren't peer reviewed), you can get the basic vocabulary in less than a week. Oh, what am I saying, Wikipedia more or less got you covered (although not all articles answer the beginner's frequent questions - for example, one on shotguns is a very short one).

Reference your notation, back in the stone age when I worked at Brinks we were taught the same bounce the shotgun blast off the pavement to bring someone down. Supposedly that also worked well on bad guys taking cover behind cars. You aimed at the ground under the car and took out their ankles when the buckshot spray bounced.

I believe RCBS used to make a set of dies for reloading the M15 shot cartridges for the M1911 pistol. Since it was introduced in the heyday of surplus 308 and 30-'06 ammo, it was designed to remanufacture those two cartridges. The 308 was preferred, because the extractor groove was a better fit for the 45 ACP extractor. I recently looked for the die set, and found out it is not available as new production any longer.
