For what it's worth, saying Hela "wants to take over Asgard, so she does" is still one of my favorite Pitch Meeting lines. It's up there with Gandalf's "breakdancing incident" and "my Physics teacher filed a restraining order after reading the scene I wrote."

Ryan George is a genius at this thing. The infinitely variable catch phrases are the framework (the bones) on which the movie review process is built. It's so good as to really be comedy classic. And it's his. Nobody else can do what he's done with Pitch Meeting. That's great for him but it does force him into a one trick pony. His other videos are fun but Pitch Meeting is comedy GOLD! Hoist on his own petard.

Film school support tech here. We cover both journalism and documentary (also used to do dramatics). We teach with everything from big studio cameras that _require_ a tripod, to shoulderCams, handiCams, to DSLRs to phones, with a bit of drone work on the side. All are valid, some better for certain situations than others, of course. "The best camera is the one you have on you when you need it" and all that.

I love that you do these. Wrote a novel a little over ten years ago and published it, but I was looking at it last year for the first time since publication and was embarrassed by how bad it was. But then I saw you do these and literally rewriting your old material that doesn't quite meet your current standard. So I opened the old file and realised that my novel could be saved with a bit of tweaking. I don't have to burn it to the ground and act like it never happened.

Hi Ryan, kind words kind words. I'm currently a film student at the University of Michigan. To answer your question, no, we don't typically shoot on our smart phones. Usually we only use our smart phones as cameras when we're in preprod (location scouting, rough storyboards, etc). While the camera on phones are great now, they don't teach you some of the important things about filmmaking that an actual DSLR can, so almost every production focused course will use Canon XF605, Blackmagic 4k and 8ks, occasionally RED cameras (I can't remember which specifically off the top of my head), and sometimes legit film cameras using actual film reels. No other real way to learn about depth of field, f-stops, and filming techniques! I totally love this series, btw, after I watch any movie that's come out in the past decade or so I always check to see if you've made a pitch for it yet and it's always a happy surprise to see you have 😁

Love this. The points you pulled out in editing are exactly what I noticed, watching this Pitch Meeting after having watched several more recent ones the last couple of days, the bit of mean-spiritedness and the repetition that kind of slows things down a bit. Seeing you actually edit and improve them with the skills you now have with this was great. Writing concisely without losing anything, making every word pull as much as much weight as it can, that's such a tough skill and it was just great to see you using your own real life examples for editing. I do really appreciate that while these are critiques in a sense, they feel like more or less "loving" critiques. It's almost impossible to make a movie that doesn't have some contrivances in it, for the sheer need to tell a complete story in a short time span. You can't show the guy knocking on 50 doors before he knocks on the right one. Nothing wrong in calling movies on such stuff, but it's a fine line to walk to be critique-y but positive and you have learned to do this, too, very well, and I for one really appreciate it. I don't think the videos would be as fun if they felt like they were genuinely "meanly" insulting people.

@@jcabassi I don't know how much work goes in making podcast, but the way I imagine it it's at the opposite of what you need to progress quickly. In short videos like this one, you do multiple takes up until you get it right, and when editing you put the spotlight on the parts that worked the best, and maybe even reshot the parts that didn't worked as planned. Said otherwise, during a single video, you are expected to make progress and to improve on your first try. And "scrapping everything you did and starting back from scratch" is a possibility that you might take multiple time per episode. On a longer format, you usually can't afford to iterate as much. And it's even worse if that's live (or if you're interviewing someone), then you simply can't change what was said.

I really liked this google doc breakdown. You took the time to read the portions you were editing or removing, whereas last time, things got highlighted and deleted too quickly to follow without pausing the video constantly. This hits a good rhythm and I didn’t feel lost, nor did it drag out too long. Please keep doing this! I actually DID get the feeling you didn’t enjoy that movie, so it’s interesting to find out that you did (I hated that movie specifically for the reasons you pointed out-the heavy themes that were completely ignored in the interest of making a comedy, even though that meant that Thor became a terrible friend and a terrible character).

Loving the rewriting part, I feel like there is a significant difference in general between talking about how you'd change the pitch and actually going through and showing us how that would really look.

Just realized I missed a word in my super smart question... I am gonna leave it as is, because honestly I would like to see Ryan explain what " favorite food " is and therefore give me a better answer the original question would have elicited. 😂

When my brother went to film school in the mid 90’s, they were still learning how to cut film. Like, actual physical 16mm film that they would need to cut and splice together as they edited their film. Digital cameras basically didn’t exist outside of the largest Hollywood productions. It’s amazing how much has changed in the past 30 years.

Film student here: We still use big bulky cameras with tripods. Phone cameras are good, but the amount of things you are able to do with them aren’t. Accurately changing aperture, ISO, etc. is much better on proper cameras.

Am I the only one that finds this behind the scenes video just incredible. I do some things and I’m not here to promote any of that but a hearing somebody’s spell out their process and looking at their old work and explaining what they would do different now is Incredible and I know I use that word twice. I’m gonna need you to get completely off my back. I’m hoping your fans that want to move forward watch this and understand if they don’t have that kind of self reflection, then they need to start looking at everything. Post is gold.
