@@damian01061973 Luckily, I don't have to look up antipodian. If you substituted the word bipolar, you would have my problem. The extreme shifts in tone from scene to scene don't work for me. A certain actor is putting in a performance better suited to the Shakespearean underpinning of the original Thor, and then immediate farce. I think your assessment is generally accurate, however I would like to note that additional photography, or reshoots, do not automatically indicate problems with the production. ALL MCU films have additional photography budgeted, which is fairly uncommon to see, and most directors will tell you that they LOVE having that available because sometimes you find something good, but unplanned, in the edit, and it lets them go back and shoot more scenes to flesh out that new part of the story. Having said that, this was easily the most troubled Marvel Studios production up till that point in time, with them actually switching directors after shooting began... and it definitely shows.

I saw a comment from a review on another channel that I thought was pretty spot on. Someone said that the problem with this movie is the same problem that every Phase 4&5 movie has suffered from--they're following Infinity War and Endgame so people are expecting that caliber of a movie. And with Dark World, it was coming off the heels of the first Avengers film, so Dark World just couldn't live up to the high bar that it and some of the other MCU movies before it had set. It's not terrible. It just happens to be a 7 in a movie series that has 8's and 9's.

But like you said, it's not exactly 'fresh' and it's not going to challenge you as a viewer, really, so it's perfectly understandable to be just 'whelmed' and even disappointed with 'fine.' I've always thought it's much too maligned among the MCU films, and maybe you'll look back on it differently the further you go, but the good news is the next several films in the MCU are outstanding. “Oh no the world is going to end” became so fatiguing (sometimes called big blue beam in the sky). It ended up hurting films with those stakes. Suicide Squad was one example. In the same year as this movie, the x-men universe released The Wolverine which I actually liked because it was a lower (or more personal) stakes story. Thor 3(ragnarok) is my favorite MCU film and it’s not even close to the dark world.

I think this film gets an unfairly harsh wrap. What it does with the Loki and Thor dynamic is huge for both of their characters, cementing their dynamic. I appreciate the commitment to fantasy and drama over the easier jokes and lighter stories the MCU often does. And this film does hint at the sinister side of Asgard that is developed on further in the future. The costume work and set design also surpass many later movies... It's choppy buttery watchable. Best of all it doesnt feel beholden to the rest of the franchise. Future films live in the world of the MCU but this one expands it

It's difficult to say (without having the originally intended film to compare it to), whether this movie suffered more from having an underdeveloped villain as a result of focusing on Thor and Loki, or whether the Thor/Loki relationship was a saving grace in an otherwise pretty bland story. Both are probably true to some extent. In any case, it pales in comparison to Iron Man 3 because Thor himself doesn't really have any arc or growth here, and as pointed out in the reaction, the "Earth is in terrible danger... again" stakes alone just aren't enough to carry it. Thankfully, though, this one is followed by a long string of absolute gems (no pun intended).

In the context of the entire mcu, this is an important film, but thats because every film is important. There will be callbacks that dont make this entirely redundant, however it is definitely like in my bottom 3 movies in the infinity saga. As you now know, the aether is an infinity stone, and they gave it to that guy in the end credit scene because they already have the tesseract in asgard and they said it wouldnt be wise to keep 2 in the same place. So this movie is definitely not the best, but because its the movie that introduces the aether, we judt have to stomach it as a film to further the overall story

Thor Ragnarok is one of the best MCU movies. Can't wait for you to get to that one. But I was never really a big fan of this one, either.

I asked the exact same question. 6:15 is it really peace if you have to kill people for it? No, choices matter. The Jedi for example, target the weapon, then the fingers, then the wrist, then the lower forearm and so on, because the theatrical nature of the story requires mercy above all else from the heroes. Star Trek Voyager, 6x22, Muse does a fair job for a dramatic science fiction series, thought I think the most fantastic example I'm aware of is Heath Leger's last film, the Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus. In my opinion, it does the best hyperbolic explaining on the topic of how to enact peace. 17:40Comics, yeah, Thor LGY #750 -Funeral for a King. Touching and relative. The shapeshifting is best left alone for now, though I will say, it could also come to be seen to relate to the aforementioned Imaginarium, if one is also familiar with the Harry Potter movie series. Again, I thank all the wonderful storytellers, even if they did in fact produce a formulaic and dull movie I bought anyway. Mew-mew sold me on it, just enough whimsy to justify 8 bucks.

Id love another thor movie, icelanders snd greenlanders pledging themselves as soldiers of asgard... actually getting a chance for Valhalla. A shot to fight along side thor. To live the tales their grandfathers told them around a fire.

As you read at the end, you kind of have to take this one as setup for a grander plan. This was not looked on as one of the better movies in the MCU, and if I can recall, the somewhat negative reviews kind of smacked the new Marvel Studios in the face. I think they had their grander plan in view, but forgot that the individual movies needed more than to just move the plot along. There was some necessary story telling here, and it will all make sense later, but I agree with you, there were weaknesses to this one.
